Heading West: Considerations on grave orientation in 3rd Millennium BC Mesopotamia
The paper presents a survey of sub-pavement burials and cemetery graves from Early Dynastic sites aiming at highlighting the presence of meaningful patterns in the orientation of the graves. The archaeological evidence is then interpreted on the light of cuneiform sources. Pending further and more accurate archaeoastronomical analyses and notwithstanding a general variability in the Mesopotamian ED funerary practices, a “solar-based” interpretation of the burials’ orientation is proposed, and the preferred western orientation is tentatively connected with the sun-set on the basis both of the location of the Netherworld and of the chthonic aspects of the sun-god Utu/Shamash
Paso Doble: Note on an early Old Babylonian seal found at Abu Tbeirah
The paper analyzes the peculiar iconography of an Early Old Babylonian seal recently discovered at Abu Tbeirah. The dancing scene depicted, together with the secondary moments, seems to suggest a connection of the representation with the goddess Ištar. Furthermore, the identification of the kind of dance in honor of the goddess is tentatively related to the celebrations established by Ea in the coeval Agušaya Poem
Institutional symbols in Early Dynastic glyptic art?
The research presented here is based on some considerations related to the so-called Fara Style and the “Contest Scenes”. The numerous seals ascribed to this style are usually described as uniform, as far as the subject is concerned. If it is true that such a big amount of seals bears so similar designs that we cannot distinguish them and that we are forced to ascribe the group to a unique and quite uniform style, Fara seals should be considered not attending to their basic function. A seal is, in fact, required to be immediately recognized in order to mark and certify ownership, and thus to warrant the reliability of what was sealed. In this article, Fara and Abu Salabikh sealings will be analyzed in order to understand if these ED Glyptic representations bear a value that goes beyond their aesthetic one, correlating the recurrence of specific symbols and motifs to a specific function in the administration

Reception and use of heritage in Iraq after 2003: A view from the (archaeological) field
The article presents an overview of the evolution of the use of ancient Mesopotamian heritage in connection with the events following the downfall of Saddam Hussein (Saddām Ḥusayn)’s regime up to the recent events. The information reported is part of a larger ongoing research
on the reception of Mesopotamian archaeological heritage in contemporary Iraqi society and beyond. The focus is devoted to the use of ancient iconography in Iraqi contemporary art while taking in consideration other aspects of the Iraqi archaeological record used and elaborated by Iraqi artists. The presence of symbols reused in different contexts and with different meanings (e.g. the head of Sargon of Akkad, the Hammurabi Stele, the Assyrian Lions hunt) show how deeply the ancient Mesopotamian heritage is rooted in the Iraqi people and artists

A Fragment of a potter's wheel from Abu Tbeirah
The present contribution is devoted to the analysis of a fragment of a potter’s wheel, made of baked clay, discovered at Abu Tbeirah during the survey of winter 2012. The focus of the discussion will be the surface treatment of the fragment, specifically the series of regularly-spaced perforations arranged in concentric bands, which offers clues to the actions and choices made by the Sumerian potter
