The dependence of the weathering of soda–lime–silica glass on environmental parameters: a preliminary investigation

    No full text
The chemical resistance (durability) of glass depends both on its chemical composition and on the chemical (type and amount of the molecules interacting with the glass surface) and physical (temperature, humidity, time, etc.) environmental parameters. A wide literature is available concerning glass weathering mechanisms, mainly involving leaching processes, but only few investigate the effects of each critical parameter. This study considers the dependence of soda–lime–silica glass alteration on temperature, relative humidity and time in the case of glass in a confined environment. The aim is to simulate the experimental conditions related to the weathering of the inner surface of empty glass containers that occurs during the storage in industrial pallets. A low cost experimental apparatus was set up, in which humidity and temperature were controlled by high performance homemade devices. The dependences of humidity, temperature and time on the glass leaching and on the formation of weathering products of low durability soda–lime–silica glass was investigated by optical and electronic microscopy (SEM), x-ray microanalysis and micro-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (IRRS)

This study concerns the alteration of glass in confined environment , characteristic of the industrial glass containers stored inpallets before filling and of the artistic stained-glass windows protected by a glazing system . In order to better understandin the different influence of the parameters of glass alteration (chemical durability, temperature, relative humidity and exposition time), an ex-novo low-expensive system ha sbeen designed and realized for the reproduction of a confined environment and for the measure and control of relative humidity and temperature. Soda-lime silica glass and potash-lime silica glass samples have been produced as models of glass containers and medieval artistic stained glass windows repectively. Outdoor and indoor (in stove) expositions of the glass samples have been performed and the weathering of the samples has been investigated by different analytical techniques, such as optical microscopy, SEM-EDS and Micro-IRRS

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Development of horse polyclonal antiserum inhibiting all in vitro biological functions of human IFN-gamma.

Following a standard immunization protocol with recombinant human interferon-γ (IFN-γ), a horse polyclonal antiserum was obtained and evaluated for its ability to interfere with multiple IFN-γ activities in vitro. Data obtained show that polyclonal horse antiserum neutralizes the antiproliferative activity of IFN-γ, inhibits the binding of IFN-γ to cellular receptors, and can up-regulate HLA-DR antigen expression and interfere with its antiviral activity. The broad neutralizing capacity of horse polyclonal antiserum has been assessed on cell lines which differ as to origin and sensitivity to IFN-γ. Moreover, we observed that this antiserum could inhibit the binding of radiolabled IFN-γ to its cellular receptor, its subsequent internalization into the target cell, and its antiviral activity. As it is able to inhibit all the biological activities of IFN-γ, this antiserum might provide new therapeutic approaches to diseases with evidence of activated cell-mediated immunity
