In a previous study EPO values were significantly lower in exposed subjects (PbB ≥ 30 mcg/dl) than in controls (PbB′′ 20 mcg/d01). The aim of the study was to verify if high PbB cause the reduction of EPO in connection with the serum concentration of this hormone expected considering the Hct and hemoglobin (Hb) levels. Both in Pb exposed workers and controls blood levels of EPO, PbB, Hb, Hct were measured. It was not observed any line relation between Hct e log EPO (p=0.01) and any multiple regression relation between log EPO, Hct and PbB into the total studied population. In our subjects PbB does not change physiologic relation between EPO and Hct and between EPO and Hb. Maybe because normal levels of Hct and Hb reduce EPO production in the healthy population. In physiologic condition of erythropoiesis, EPO does not seem influenced by PbB. © PI-ME, Pavia 2011
In vitro percutaneous penetration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from sunscreen creams
Background: Dermal exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) affects many outdoor workers such as asphalt workers. Usually the use of sunscreen creams is suggested to protect them from UV radiation. However sunscreen could prevent or facilitate dermal absorption of industrial chemicals.
Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess percutaneous penetration of anthracene using 2 different sunscreen creams as vehicle.
Methods: In vitro permeation experiments were carried out using standardized in vitro methods with static diffusion cells. Excised human skin prepared to approximately 350 mm thickness was fixed on the diffusion cells. The receiving phase was a saline solution with 6% PEG 20. The 2 sunscreen creams (one lipophilic and one hydrophilic) were applied uniformly (2mg/cm2) on the skin mounted on the diffusion cell. After 20 minutes, a solution of anthracene and artificial sweat was added. Analysis of anthracene in the receptor samples was carried out by beta counter analyzer (Packard).
Results: Results did not show a percutaneous penetration of anthracene from sunscreen creams while in previous studies in vitro percutaneous penetration of anthracene was demonstrated using the same methodology.
Discussion and Conclusion: The use of sunscreen creams among outdoor workers, would not seem to enhance percutaneous penetration of PAHs. On the contrary it seems to be able to reduce dermal absorption of anthracene in the workplace

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome and work [Sindrome delle apnee ostruttive notturne ed attività lavorativa]
One third of the Italian population suffers from sleeping troubles. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS) represents the most common of these diseases. OSAS is characterized by many risk factors and the presence of repeated episodes of obstruction of the respiratory tract during sleeping. The aim of the study was to appraise the presence of the syndrome OSAS in a population of 21 hospitalized patients (20 males and 1 female) from 1999 to 2006. 5 male patients were hospitalized for OSAS, while in the other 16 the diagnosis has been formulated after the admission to hospital. Males were all employed in duties at risk (driving of means of transport control of various types of equipment, masons), while the woman was employed in the ironing in the textile industry. The diagnostic protocol foresaw the anamnesis for the individualization of risk factors (such as obesity, tobacco, alcoholism) and of typical symptoms (such as snoring, diurnal drowsiness, migraine, difficulty of concentration). EES and polysomnography were performed in the positive cases. A follow-up has been carried out from 1 to 6 years after the hospitalization to assess the effectiveness of the therapy and the possible consequences of the diagnosis on the work conditions
