A hierarchical compromise model for the joint optimization of recovery operations and distribution of emergency goods in humanitarian logistics

    No full text
The distribution of emergency goods to a population affected by a disaster is one of the most fundamental operations in Humanitarian Logistics. In the case of a particularly disruptive event, parts of the distribution infrastructure (e.g., bridges, roads) can be damaged. This damage would make it impossible and/or unsafe for the vehicles to reach all the centers of demand (e.g., towns and villages). In this paper, we propose and solve the problem of planning for recovery of damaged elements of the distribution network, so that the consequent distribution planning would benefit the most. We apply the model, called RecHADS, to a case study based on the 2010 Haiti earthquake. We also show empirically the importance of coordinating recovery and distribution operations optimization

    The complexity of belief update

    No full text
Belief revision and belief update are two different forms of belief change, and they serve different purposes. In this paper we focus on belief update, the formalization of change in beliefs due to changes in the world. The complexity of the basic update (introduced by Winslett) has been determined by Eiter and Gottlob. Since then, many other formalizations have been proposed to overcome the limitations and drawbacks of Winslett's update. In this paper we analyze the complexity of the proposals presented in the literature: the standard semantics by Winslett, the minimal change with exception and the minimal change with maximal disjunctive information by Zhang and Foo, the update with disjunctive function by Herzig, the abduction-based update and the generalized update by Boutilier. We relate some of these approaches to belief update to previous work on closed world reasoning

Redundancy in logic I: CNF propositional formulae

    No full text
A knowledge base is redundant if it contains parts that can be inferred from the rest of it. We study some problems related to the redundancy of a CNF formula. In particular, any CNF formula can be made irredundant by deleting some of its clauses: what results is an irredundant equivalent subset. We study the complexity of problems related to irredundant equivalent subsets: verification, checking existence of an irredundant equivalent subset with a given size, checking necessary and possible presence of clauses in irredundant equivalent subsets, and uniqueness. We also consider the problem of redundancy with different definitions of equivalence. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
