No full textVon dem antiochenischen Rhetoriklehrer Libanius aus dem 4. Jh. n. Chr. ist eine aussergewöhnlich umfangreiche Korrespondenz erhalten: Mehr als 1500 Briefe bezeugen Libanius' weitreichendes Netzwerk. Darunter befinden sich zahlreiche Bitt- und Empfehlungsschreiben zuhanden von Beamten in der Reichsadministration und am kaiserlichen Hof. Libanius versuchte seine einflussreichen Freunde zu überzeugen, ihre Macht zugunsten seiner Schützlinge – Schüler und andere Freunde – einzusetzen. Libanius selbst verfügte über keine institutionelle Macht. Aufgrund seines Netzwerkes war es ihm jedoch möglich, seinen Einflussbereich weit über seine Schule in Antiochia hinaus wirksam zu machen. Mächtige Freunde trugen wesentlich dazu bei, seine eigene soziale Stellung zu erhöhen. In Libanius' Briefen und Reden fällt dabei die Selbstverständlichkeit auf, mit welcher er davon ausgeht, dass er über seine Freunde Einfluss ausüben kann. In seiner Rede Über Armut oder über Freunde beschreibt Libanius Freunde in Anlehnung an Xenophon (Xen. Mem. 2.4.7) gar als zusätzliche Körper, die einem mitsamt ihrem Verstand in der Bewältigung alltäglicher Aufgaben zur Verfügung stehen (Lib. Or. 8.7). Dieser Vortrag wird sich mit dem Verständnis von Freundschaft bei Libanius und den Formen interpersonellem Einfluss in solchen Beziehungen beschäftigen

No full textA professor of Greek rhetoric, frequent letter writer and influential social figure, Libanius (AD 314–393) is a key author for anybody interested in late antiquity, ancient rhetoric, ancient epistolography and ancient biography. Nevertheless, he remains understudied because it is such a daunting task to access his large and only partially translated oeuvre. This volume, which is the first comprehensive study of Libanius, offers a critical introduction to the man, his texts, their context and reception.
