"Pulitzer Prize-winning author of plays such as True West, Fool For Love, and Buried Child, and Academy Award-nominated actor in many films, including The Right Stuff, Sam Shepard is arguably America's finest working dramatist. He has said many times that he will never write a memoir. But he has written intensively about his inner life and creative work to his former father-in-law and housemate, Johnny Dark. This book gathers nearly 40 years of their correspondence, which provides the most honest and complete record of Shepard's professional and personal lives that he is ever likely to publish. The book is illustrated with Dark's candid, revealing photographs of Shepard and their mutual family across many years, as well as facsimiles of numerous letters. It makes a perfect companion to Treva Wurmfeld's recent film, Shepard & Dark"-

Opportunities for the development of geometrical reasoning in current textbooks in the UK and Japan

    No full text
Developing a good model of the school geometry curriculum continues to be one of the most important tasks in curricular design in mathematics. This paper reports on an initial analysis of current best-selling textbooks used in lower secondary schools in Japan and the UK (specifically England and Scotland). The analysis indicates that, following the specification of the mathematics curriculum in these countries, Japanese textbooks set out to develop students’ deductive reasoning skills through the explicit teaching of proof in geometry, whereas comparative UK textbooks tend, at this level, to concentrate on finding angles, measurement, drawing, and so on, coupled with a modicum of opportunities for conjecturing and inductive reasoning. The available research suggests that each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses. Finding ways of capitalising on the strengths and mitigating the weaknesses could prove helpful in formulating new curricular models and designing new student textbooks

This is a handwritten letter to the Atlanta Inquirer from Johnny Parham. The letter is about a proposed agreement about ceasing the non-violent protest to desegregate schools. Parham describes his apprehensive sentiments about the agreement and its integrity. He is concerned that the movement would be in vain if the agreement was signed. The agreement is a compromise invalidating African Americans' legal entitlement to equal rights. Parham mentions the student movement, and African Americans have moved passed compromises but are in a stage of demanding their equal rights. 2 pages

The shaping of student knowledge: learning with dynamic geometry software

    No full text
The focus of this paper is a software genre usually referred to as ‘dynamic geometry’ because of the ability of the user to dynamically manipulate geometrical figures created with the software tool. Using data from a longitudinal study of 12-13 students’ use of dynamic geometry software, the focus of the analysis is on the interpretations the students make of geometrical objects and relationships when using this form of software. The analysis suggests that the students’ mathematical reasoning is shaped by their interactions with the software in that their ability to explain geometrical facts and relationships evolves from imprecise, ‘everyday’ expressions, through reasoning that is overtly mediated by the software environment, to mathematical explanations of the geometric situation that transcend the particular tool being used. Such findings suggest that curriculum initiatives that encourage the use of dynamic geometry software are appropriate but that the incorporation of such software into classroom practices is unlikely to be straightforward

Vastava informatsiooni abil on võimalik luua töökeskkond, kus on hea töötada. Analüüsi tulemustest selgus, et Johnny AS`i töötajad on üldiselt rahulolevad, rahulolu erinevate teguritega on 72%. Kõige enam olid vastajad rahul töökaaslastega ning vahetu juhi tööga. Suurimat rahulolematust põhjustavad töötajatele töötasu ja tulemustasu. Leiti mitmeid statistiliselt olulisi erinevusi sotsiaal-demograafiliste tunnuste lõikes erinevate rahulolu teguritega. Sisu poolest oli kõige tähtsam erinevus nendest rahulolus vahetu juhiga üksuste lõikes. Kuigi ettevõtte terviku seisukohalt oldi vahetu juhi tööga rahul, siis võrdluses üksuste lõikes ilmnes, et mõne juhi töö põhjustab töötajates rahulolematust. Olulisuse ja kogetu võrdluses ilmnes, et suurimad erinevused töötajate hinnangutes ettevõtte terviku seisukohalt olid ametialaste koolituste olemasolus (erinevus 25%), töötasus (41%), tulemustasus (42%), tagasisides tehtud töö kohta (27%), tunnustuses hea töö eest (23%), kindluse tundes (22%) ning probleemide lahendatavuses (24%). Ka üksuste lõikes ilmnesid suurimad erinevused samades tegurites, lisaks selgus, et mõnes üksuses sooviksid töötajad paremaid suhteid töökaaslastega ning muutusi vahetu juhi tööstiilis. Korrelatsioonanalüüsi tulemusena ilmnes mitmeid statistiliselt olulisi seoseid erinevate väidete vahel, millest kõige tugevamad seosed olid järgmiste väidete vahel: Leian, et kvalifikatsioonitaseme 2 saavutamine on mulle võimetekohane ja Leian, et kvalifikatsioonitaseme 3 saavutamine on mulle võimetekohane (r=0,870, p<0,01); Johnny AS-is on võimalik hea töö eest tulemustasu saada ja Töötasu Johnny AS-is on õiglane (vastab minu pingutusele ja oskustele) (r=0,778, p<0,01). Tulemuste järgi motiveerivad Johnny AS`i töötajaid kõige enam hästi töötama töötasu, huvitav töö, tulemustasu, meeldivad töökaaslased ja arendav töö. Nendest nelja (töötasu, meeldivad töökaaslased, huvitav töö ja arendav töö) on töötajad kogenud ka töötamisel Johnny AS`is. Autor jõudis uurimustöö tulemusena järgmistele olulisematele järeldustele: • Rahulolu töötasuga sõltub üksusest; • Töötajad eelistavad tulemustasu preemiatele; • Rahulolu tulemustasuga on seotud rahuloluga kvalifikatsioonitasemete protsessis; • Töötajad sooviksid rohkem ametialaseid koolitusi; • Töötajad sooviksid rohkem tagasisidet tehtud töö kohta, sealhulgas saada kiidetud; • Ühes Johnny AS´i müügiüksuses ilmnes lahendamata probleeme, mis mõjuvad halvasti töötajate omavahelisele läbisaamisele ning kindluse tundele. • Johnny AS`i töötajaid motiveerivad kõige enam hästi töötama töötasu, huvitav töö, tulemustasu, meeldivad töökaaslased ja arendav töö.Võttes aluseks antud uuringust selgunud kitsaskohti Johnny AS`i töötajate töörahulolus ja motivatsioonis, tegi autor ettevõtte juhtkonnale järgmised ettepanekud töötajate töörahulolu ja motivatsiooni parandamiseks: 79 • Vaadata üle töötajate töötasud lähtudes eelkõige üksuse paiknevusest. Leaving a company by a good worker is a great loss. It can be avoided by creating a place of work that satisfies workers (good working conditions) and motivates them. Places of work cannot be created and made suitable for employees without knowing their values, attitudes and needs. Therefore managers should first get to know their workers. One way to get to know employees values and needs is a job satisfaction and motivation survey, after what managers are able to create an environment, where people love to work. Satisfied and motivated worker does not leave a company as easily as unsatisfied worker. A reason that makes this research more substantial is a fact it has not been reaserched in Johnny`s Ltd before. A staff turnover is quite big in that company. It may be caused of dissatisfaction and lack of motivation. The purpose of this research is to identify workers` satisfaction and motivation in Johnny`s Ltd and to make suggestions to the management based on the results. The results of the study make possible to give a review of the strengths and also weaknesses of a job satisfastion and motivation. The initial information of conducting the research were collected by questionnaires and structured interviews. The target group of the questionnaire was the whole personnel of Johnny`s Ltd. The interviews were carried out with 3 executives and 3 workers. The data of the questionnaire was processed with a program „SPSS Statistics 17,0”. For presenting the material was used a program MS Excel 2007. The methods of statistic analysis being used are descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, correlation analysis and the content analysis of the interviews. As the results of the analysis identified that Johnny`s Ltd employees were most satisfied with their co-workers and job done by their direct superior. The most dissatisfying things are a salary and a performance fee. It came out that being satisfied with a salary depends of a division. The author of the research made a proposition to look over the salaries according to the location of the divisions to make sure if the salaries are comparable to other companys salaries`. Since it is impossible to get performance fee regularly and it causes dissatisfaction, the author made a proposition to establish a systematic performance fee. The satisfaction with the motivation fee is connected to the contentment in qualification level process. Based on afore-mentioned the author made a proposition to change the qualification level process. The results showed that the biggest differences between workers requests and actual experiences are a lack of professional training, a resolution of problems, confidence and a little feedback from a boss, including a lack of approval words. To improve the situation the author made the following propositions: 1. To put into practice a required appraisal interviews by division managers; 2. To deal with a specific division in order to solve the problems there and make the workers confident; 3. Formating a management style that encourages and supports their employees; 4. To enable a professional trainings to the managers of the divisions; 5. To give a title to the winner of the sales contests` - the worker a the months or the worker of the year. Also there turned out five important things that motivates workers the most. These are salary, interesting job, performance fee, pleasant co-workers and developing work. In order to inspire the employees to do a better job, the author recommends to use the motivating factors revealed of this resurch knowingly. In addition, the author suggests to repeat the job satisfaction and motivation survey every year. In conclusion can be said the research served the purpose. The workers` job satisfaction and motivation was identified and the propositions to improve the situation was made by the author. This master`s research is composed in Estonian language. The main bart of research consists 84 pages and includes 1 tab, 17 figures of which 15 are bar charts – all made by the author. Also there are 35 annexes. There have been used 75 literary sources, of which 17 are scientific articles, 2 master`s researches, 1 dissertation, 11 internet sources (including 6 internet articles) and the rest are from different authors` books and writings. In this letter dated January 5th, 1990, Julian Bond writes to Johnny Parham, sharing various topics. He mentions receiving Johnny's call during the holidays and his unsuccessful attempts to get a response from Vincent Fort. He discusses the King Papers Project and proposes the Atlanta Project, which could involve academic research on the Atlanta Student Movement, depositing collected documents and interviews in an archive at the Woodruff Library. Julian speculates about potential financial support for the project and its impact on encouraging students, especially history and political science majors, to explore the relevance of this history. He advises Johnny, likely the chair, to maintain pressure for a more scholarly tone in their efforts. Julian also shares his experience attending a similar 30th-year reunion in Nashville, where memories were recorded and artifacts collected, suggesting that such an approach could benefit CAU and other Black colleges in distinguishing themselves from their white competitors. 2 pages
