Du Fu about History: Zhuge Liang
Full text linkThe aim of this bachelor's thesis is to provide a thematic analysis of Du Fu's poems about Zhuge Liang from the Three Kingdoms, who is nowadays known primarily as a brilliant military strategist, and to answer the questions about how exactly Du Fu conceived this important historical figure, which values he associated with it and how this influenced his own attitudes towards life. On this basis, it also tries to answer the question of why Zhuge Liang attracted the poet's attention. In total, there are 18 poems in various forms, which is the highest number of compositions Du Fu has ever dedicated to one historical figure. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter summarizing the most important historical contexts. The main body of the thesis is divided into two thematic areas - The Image of Zhuge Liang in Du Fu's work and Zhuge Liang as a Theme in Du Fu's work. These are further divided into sub-chapters, which thoroughly analyze individual poems. All poems are accompanied by their translation into Czech language. Zhuge Liang's biography in the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms is also taken into account in the analysis of the poems.
