Intracavity optogalvanic spectroscopy applied to radiocarbon detection
Radiocarbon is extremely useful for archeological dating as well as for clinical, laboratory and atmospheric tracer applications. In this thesis, we report a new physical description of the ICOGS system process of radiocarbon optogalvanic signal extraction and analysis. To be specific, we first describe the fundamental theory of the Optogalvanic effect. Based on a set of 4-energy level rate equations for N2 buffer gas and a set of 2-energy level for CO2 sample gas, we simulate the N2 and CO2 ICOGS OG signals. Moreover, according to the phase difference from our simulation and experiment observation, we propose three methods (1.Vector Phase and Amplitude fitting, 2.Differential Method and 3.Vector Decomposition Method) to separate CO2 OG signal from N2 OG signal. Experimental results demonstrate our quantitative radiocarbon detection near 10 zeptomole14C levels in 10 µg samples.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Junming Li

Triplexers Based on SOI Flattop AWGs
Triplexers are designed based on SOl flattop arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs). Three wavelengths (1310, 1490,and 1550nm) operate at three diffraction orders of AWGs. Simulation shows that the 3dB bandwidth, crosstalk, and loss are 6nm,less than -40dB, and 5dB, respectively. The output optical fields of the device fabricated in our laboratory are clear and show a good triplexing function

Gesture Decoding Using ECoG Signals from Human Sensorimotor Cortex: A Pilot Study
Electrocorticography (ECoG) has been demonstrated as a promising neural signal source for developing brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). However, many concerns about the disadvantages brought by large craniotomy for implanting the ECoG grid limit the clinical translation of ECoG-based BMIs. In this study, we collected clinical ECoG signals from the sensorimotor cortex of three epileptic participants when they performed hand gestures. The ECoG power spectrum in hybrid frequency bands was extracted to build a synchronous real-time BMI system. High decoding accuracy of the three gestures was achieved in both offline analysis (85.7%, 84.5%, and 69.7%) and online tests (80% and 82%, tested on two participants only). We found that the decoding performance was maintained even with a subset of channels selected by a greedy algorithm. More importantly, these selected channels were mostly distributed along the central sulcus and clustered in the area of 3 interelectrode squares. Our findings of the reduced and clustered distribution of ECoG channels further supported the feasibility of clinically implementing the ECoG-based BMI system for the control of hand gestures
Polarization-Insensitive Silica on Silicon Arrayed Waveguide Grating Design
A new technology for fabrication of silica on silicon arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) based on deep etching and thermal oxidation is presented.Using this method,a silicon layer is remained at the side of waveguide. The stress distribution and effective refractive index of waveguide fabricated by this approach are calculated using finite element and finite difference beam propagation method, respectively. The results of these studies indicate that the stress of silica on silicon optical waveguide can be matched in parallel and vertical direction and AWG polarization dependent wavelength (PDλ) can be reduced effectively due to side-silicon layer
Design and numerical analysis for low birefringence silica on silicon waveguides
A new fabrication technology for three-dimensionally buried silica on silicon optical waveguide based on deep etching and thermal oxidation is presented. Using this method, a silicon layer is left at the side of waveguide. The stress distribution and effective refractive index are calculated by using finite element method and finite different beam propagation method, respectively. The results indicate that the stress of silica on silicon optical waveguide fabricated by this method can be matched in parallel and vertical directions and stress birefringence can be effectively reduced due to the side-silicon layer
