Mechanistic Insight into Next Generation Batteries: The Story of Li-oxygen and Zn-aqueous Batteries

    No full text
Current Li-ion batteries dominate the market but face great challenges with respect to safety, cost and the higher energy and power densit requirements of electrical vehicles and stationary energy storage. Relevant for mobile electrical transport, Li-O2 batteries in theory offer the highest specific energy among all the lithium electrochemical energy storage systems. Research efforts have been made to address the challenges that impede the functioning of this battery, which include low round trip efficiency, low specific capacity and poor cycling stability. To understand the origin of these issues, attaining a deeper understanding of the mechanism behind the electrochemical reactions is of vital importance. This also forms the foundation for exploring ideal oxygen cathodes and better electrolytes. The aqueous zinc batteries are another potential candidate for large scale electric energy storage owing to its low-cost, high operational safety, and environmental benignity. However, it is not easy to find a suitable insertion cathode for ZIBs, because the electrostatic interaction between divalent Zn ions. The development of host materials for ZIBs is still in its infancy, and in-depth understanding of the electrochemical processes involved is paramount at this early stage. The focus of this thesis is on attaining mechanistic insight into the electrochemical processes occurring in working Li-O2 and aqueous zinc batteries, which guides the choice/design of proper electrode materials for these next generation battery systems

    A note on Strebel differentials

    No full text
Let S be a hyperbolic Riemann surface and let T(S) be the Teichmuller space of S, viewed as Teichmuller equivalence classes of Beltrami differentials. The following theorem is proved in this paper: Suppose tau (0) is an arbitrarily given point of T(S) and tau is a Strebel point of T(S). Then for any extremal Beltrami differential mu of tau (0) we have 0 less than or equal to //u// - Re integral integral (S) mu (z) phi (tau)(z)dydx less than or equal to C[exp(d(T)(tau (0),tau))-1], where d(T) is the Teichmuller distance and C is a constant. As a consequence of this inequality, for any point tau (0) in T(S), there is a Hamilton sequence phi (n) for any extremal differential of tau (0) formed by Strebel differentials.Mathematics, AppliedMathematicsCPCI-S(ISTP)

Study on the elastic-plastic behavior of a porous hierarchical bioscaffold used for bone regeneration

    No full text
A perfectly plastic von Mises model is proposed to study the elastic-plastic behavior of a porous hierarchical scaffold used for bone regeneration. The proposed constitutive model is implemented in a finite element (FE) routine to obtain the stress-strain relationship of a uniaxially loaded cube of the scaffold, whose constituent is considered to be composed of cortical bone. The results agree well with experimental data for uniaxial loading case of a cancellous bone. We find that the unhomogenized stress distribution results in different mechanical properties from but still comparable to our previous theory. The scaffold is a promising candidate for bone regeneration

Statistics of the subgrid scales after the shock-turbulence interaction

    No full text
The interaction of a normal shock with isotropic turbulence (IT) represents a basic problem for studying some of the phenomena associated with high speed flows, such as hypersonic flight, supersonic combustion and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). In general, in practical applications, the shock width is much smaller than the turbulence scales and the upstream turbulent Mach number is modest. In this case, recent high resolution shock-resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) (Ryu and Livescu, J. Fluid Mech., 756, R1, 2014) show that the interaction can be described by the Linear Interaction Approximation (LIA). By using LIA to alleviate the need to solve the shock, DNS post-shock data can be generated at much higher Reynolds numbers than previously possible. Here, such results with Taylor Reynolds number around 180180 are used to investigate the properties of the subgrid scales (SGS). In particular, it is shown that the shock interaction decreases the asymmetry of the SGS dissipation PDF as the shock Mach number increases, with a significant enhancement in size of the regions and magnitude of backscatter

Mechanical properties of a hollow-cylindrical-joint honeycomb

    No full text
In this paper, we constructed a new honeycomb by replacing the three-edge joint of the conventional regular hexagonal honeycomb with a hollow-cylindrical joint, and developed a corresponding theory to study its mechanical properties, i.e., Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, fracture strength and stress intensity factor. Interestingly, with respect to the conventional regular hexagonal honeycomb, its Young's modulus and fracture strength are improved by 76% and 303%, respectively; whereas, for its stress intensity factor, two possibilities exist for the maximal improvements which are dependent of its relative density, and the two improvements are 366% for low-density case and 195% for high-density case, respectively. Moreover, a minimal Poisson's ratio exists. The present structure and theory could be used to design new honeycomb materials
