The Generic Structure of CSR Reports in Italian, Chinese, and English: A Corpus-Based Analysis

    No full text
Background: This study examines the generic structure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports, which are becoming standard practice for corporate communication of social and environmental performance beyond financial disclosure. Literature review: Genre theories provide a framework for exploring genres contextualized in different cultures. Based on the English for Specific Purposes approach of genre analysis, this study compares the move structure of CSR reports in Italian, Chinese, and English from a corpus-based perspective. Research questions: 1. What are the main moves used in CSR reports? 2. Are there any cross-cultural similarities or variations in terms of generic features? Methodology: Combining genre theories with concepts from Systemic Functional Linguistics, we designed an observational framework for move identification. Based on a 15-move scheme, we annotated 18 CSR reports for comparative analysis. Results and conclusions: The CSR report is characterized by rhetorical recursivity and hybridity of speech acts: beyond “reporting” and “presenting,” it is also “demonstrating,” “evaluating,” and “committing.” As a globally established genre, it presents noticeable generic similarity in different languages, suggesting that the communicative purposes of CSR reports are recognized by different cultures. The top six moves in the Performance-reporting section of the CSR reports present identical trends in terms of extensiveness ranking in all three languages. Cross-cultural variations mainly involve the use of optional moves, such as the dominant use of the move “Presenting individual cases” in the Chinese sample. The observational framework for move identification may also be transferable to other genres. The limitations of this study include the sample size and the absence of an author survey. Future research could investigate the CSR report from a diachronic perspective, to explore how its genre structure has developed over time

Faculty Advisor: Danni Li, Ph.D.Fractionating human plasma into density groups (e.g., HDL) allows for more effective identification of differences in plasma proteins between non-AD patients and AD patients. The current standard for fractionating plasma lipoproteins is ultracentrifugation, however, this is both time and labor intensive and impractical for clinical use. Apolipoprotein AI (ApoAI) is a major protein on HDL. The objective of this study was to develop an immunoprecipitation protocol to isolate HDL from human plasma. ApoAI specific antibodies coupled to magnetic beads were used to precipitate ApoAI from human plasma samples. ApoAI was then eluted from the beads, digested using a trypsin digest protocol, and measured by a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC-MS). Results from the LC-MS were used to determine the successful isolation of HDL and identify other co-isolated proteins from the plasma. In the future, antibodies specific to other plasma fractions (e.g., chylomicrons, VLDL, IDL, LDL) will be used to isolate those fractions from plasma samples. This research was supported by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).Bhalerao, Aniket; Flaten, Zach; Li, Danni. Ph.D.Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are promising alternative for lithium ion batteries, due to the high abundance and wide distribution of sodium sources in the earth thus the lower price than the lithium source. In the present thesis, we have investigated several P-based anodes for SIBs.We start our study with tin phosphide (Sn₄P₃). Using the solution-liquid-solid (SLS) method, we have synthesized the phase pure Sn₄P₃ nanotops. The electrochemical performance of them are also performed, we find that they mainly suffer from the fading of the cycle stability. Ex-situ XRD reveals that the Sn aggregation contributes to this fading, other reasons could be the volume expansion and the unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI).We then try to introduce the second phase SbSn to address the issues of the Sn₄P₃. We propose to make a Sn₄P₃@SbSn core-shell structure, however, the obtained Sn4P3/SbSn composites show side by side structure. Even though, the obtained performance of this composite is still better than that for the phase pure Sn₄P₃ anode. We also make a ternary phosphide, Cu₄SnP₁₀, we expect that introducing Cu would help to address the problems of either Sn or P. It's the first time for us to find the anode reactivity of this phosphide for SIBs. Phase pure Cu₄SnP₁₀ nanowires show high capacities of ~800 mA h g⁻¹ but limited cycle stability. We then make the Cu₄SnP₁₀ /MWCNTs composites for longer cycle stability anode.Different from forming phosphide, we finally investigate the P composites based materials, including the P-Ti-C and P-TiO₂-C composites. The local chemistry of P in those composites is manipulated. P-Ti-C shows the longest cycle stability among all investigated samples (~220ᵗʰ with capacity of ~400 mA h g⁻¹). Due to the low P ratio, the capacity of the P-Ti-C is limited. Learning from the P-Ti-C, we then obtain P-TiO₂-C composites with higher P ratio, it shows a high reversible capacity of 1147 mA h g⁻¹ at a current density of 100 mA g⁻¹ with good cyclability. Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2019.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 81-90).Abstracts also in Chinese.Title from PDF title page (viewed on 25, November, 2020).Lan, Danni = Na li zi dian chi lin ji fu ji cai liao de kai fa / Lan Danni

Study on Mechanical Properties and Structural Deformation of [111] Oriented Mg-Li Alloy

    No full text
Mg-Li alloy is widely used in aerospace and military equipment, but the research on its micromechanical mechanism is still insufficient. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulation is used to analyze the nano-indentation response and mechanical mechanism of single crystal Mg-Li. The deformation and hardness changes of Mg-Li under different loads were studied by load–displacement and hardness–depth curves. At the same time, the dislocation defects and equivalent stress are analyzed to reveal the dislocation formation and stress distribution in the process of deformation. Finally, under the condition of stress relaxation, the mechanical behavior of Mg-Li in the process of nano-indentation was revealed, and the deformation mechanism of Mg-Li alloy was studied

War crimes are the most serious criminal offences, which in terms of their characteristics are related to violations of the rules of international law during a war, armed conflict and occupation. One of the consequences of the commission of war crimes is material and non-material harm, caused as a rule to a large number of people. Therefore liability for damages and reparation of the harm caused to the victims of war crimes is equally as important as the criminal prosecution of the perpetrators themselves. In the territory of the Republic of Croatia and neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, wars and armed conflicts were waged in recent history, and war crimes were committed. Still today criminal proceedings and proceedings for payment of damages and reparation for the harm that was caused are being conducted against the perpetrators and the responsible persons. Regarding liability for damages for the war crimes committed, the state will very often appear alongside the wrongdoer as the responsible person, and as a result the question will arise of the expiration of the statute of limitations for reparation towards a state. It is also important to differentiate war damage and acts of terrorism from a possible war crime and, regarding payment of damages to victims of war crimes, it is necessary to conduct rapid and efficient compensation proceedings. The subject of this paper is an analysis of the legislation and case law related to liability for damages and the harm caused by war crimes. The paper first explains the terminology and the differences between a war crime, war damage and an act of terrorism, and then liability is discussed for the harm caused by war crimes and reparation of that harm.I crimini di guerra sono i più gravi reati che per definizione sono collegati alla violazione delle regole internazionali in tempi di guerra, di conflitti armati e di occupazione.

China's unique social development of rapid urbanization, high population density, and the emergence of new culture have put heightened demands on my generation (Millennials) and increased the need to care for our mental health. As my generation became satisfied with their material life, our demand for spiritual healing surfaced and increased. But traditional cultural ideology, stigma surrounding mental health issues, and the lack of psychological education and consult resources make Chinese people less likely to seek psychiatric healthcare. Social Anxiety Disorder is one of the neglected but ubiquitous emotional disturbances among the young generation in China. This study addresses the cultural and social context of Social Anxiety as well as the needs of individuals who suffer from Social Anxiety for a healthy way of emotion expression. This thesis studies an interdisciplinary approach of design through borrowing concepts from professional psychotherapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Meditation, and Art Therapy to explore the possibility of self-emotion management for socially anxious individuals, and design a language which records and translates emotion data visually and can be used systematically. Using research methods such as Heuristic Inquiry, Cultural Probes, and Information Visualization, I have developed an interactive emotion tracking tool, which provides users the opportunity to record and reflect their emotional experiences in order to gain self-awareness, and achieve emotional healing and regulation.Emotion visualizationDesign for well-beingSocial anxiety disorderEmotional self-awarenessInformation desig

    Innocence and Tainted

Innocence By Danni Barth In a world so tainted by the sound of cries, the child\u27s laughter fills the skies With the joy and wonder everywhere, they lived their lives unaware With shallow graves waiting to be dug, I hope the children embrace every hug Their eyes so wide yet clouded still, one day waiting for their eventual kill Innocence training like a guiding light for their attackers to violate at night With hearts untainted free from strife they see the beauty from every life Innocence a tender grace, a reminder of a simpler yet unreachable place Let us cherish their innocence because it is so rare, protected with love protected with care For the children a different place we must create before for them it is too late Tainted By Danni Barth So heinous so unkind our innocence abandoned and left behind Tainted by the darkness we have seen our pure heart robbed of its pristine o Once filled with laughter once filled with delight now shadowed by our haunting nights Our innocence wrecked, our innocent slaughtered, nobody\u27s son nobody\u27s daughter Let us not forget the universal strength that lies within our combined spirits length For even in the face of pain our resilience will eternally remain May we surround ourselves with love and care help us heal and our burdens we share Restore innocence piece by piece and let our hearts find gentle peace Authors Note: In these poems about obliviousness and tainted innocence, the author explores the feelings of assaults and the great effects that can occur when you are robbed of your childlike state. Through the power of community, survivors are able to repair their wounds and grow together again, but it is not without its battles. Assault takes a grave toll on people and innocence is never able to be given back. This poem serves as a reminder that no matter the circumstances we can live through, shared experiences and continue to work together and be support systems for those who need us and for when we need others.https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/tellallthetruthfall2023/1031/thumbnail.jp
