Beyond Socioeconomic Status: Some Implications for Planned Health Intervention Among the Poor

    No full text
This paper discusses the insights derived and the lessons learned from two research studies that have been recently conducted among families in rural Leyte, “Determinants of Maternal Health Care Utilization among Rural Women: The Case of Three Barangays in Leyte” and the urban poor of Metro Manila, “Health Seeking Behavior among Families in High Risk Urban Communities.” The discussion, however, is limited to the utilization of health care services among rural and urban poor families, specifically the use of public and private health facilities and the services of the health functionaries.urban management, health sector, urbanization, health care, rural sector

Landholder Types in Leyte, The Philippines: A Review of Literature and Proposals for Methods to Extend Understanding

    No full text
Landholder typologies are potentially useful to assist in the design and administration of tree planting support programs. This paper reports a review of relevant literature on the nature of landholder types in regard to tree planting and upland farming in the Philippines, and some preliminary impressions of landholder types in several communities in Leyte on the basis of information obtained from visits to these communities in 2001. The potential research methodology to examine landholder attitudes and explore for the presence of distinct groups with respect to these attitudes in Leyte is examined

Developing a High Value Timber Industry in the Leyte Based on Furniture Production: Future Prospects and Lessons from Experiences in Tropical Australia

    No full text
The desirability of and prospects for development of a high-value timber industry in Leyte, Philippines, are examined. Lessons are drawn from extensive research undertaken in tropical north Queensland, Australia, including studies of landholder attitudes; sawmilling activities, including the role of portable sawmills; potential financial returns from plantations of high value rainforest cabinet timbers; and marketing studies involving cabinet-makers and consumers. These studies suggest the need to demonstrate that money can be made from smallholder and community plantations, to have harvest security, to convince politicians and public about benefits of forestry, to be able to develop effective programs that target particular groups, and to develop a range of financing arrangements (e.g. carbon credits, institutional and venture capital) that allow early cash flows. Issues associated with the development of a furniture industry in the Leyte are discussed in the light of these research experiences

Improving Commercial Possibilities of Non-wood Forest Products from Leyte, the Philippines

    No full text
Current literature regarding the economic potential of non-wood forest products (NWFPs) has become more cautious than previously, and earning an income from NWFPs is no longer considered a certainty for dwellers in many forested areas. However, there is also more information on the NWFPs, the areas from which there can be sustained collection and the markets where they can be competitive. This paper discusses some of the considerations to be taken into account to prevent costly mistakes in choosing NWFPs for commercialisation. It also highlights the possibilities for particular products to improve their prospects in markets from the local to the national and international level, using information from literature and past data on NWFPs in Leyte Province in the Philippines as an illustration. Past data include a list of several NWFPs from Cienda, Leyte. A table of relative frequency of use was assembled from this list after two rounds of interviews, to form the basis for possibly marketable NWFPs using a provisional template

    OPERATION LEYTE – OPERATIONAL FIRES

    No full text
Operational fires are one of most important functions in a synergy effect with other operational functions that contribute to the achievement of targeted operational goals. The main operational goal of the American takeover of the Philippines was cutting Japan’s supply lines. This goal had been achieved primarily by effective planning of operational fires. The Japanese forces were neutralised by air strikes, primarily on air bases and aviation, sea ports and ships and those places where they could provide support to forces in the Philippines. This created conditions for landing in the Philippines. By the successful isolation of the Philippines, the US forces gained an advantage that resulted in landing their troops in the Philippines, and the victory in the largest naval and air battle at that time – the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Th e Japanese desperate attempts to use the kamikazes could not prevent the inevitable, and that was the military defeat of Japan

Leyte disaster, background and some clues to upgrade disaster mitigation plans

    No full text
The landslide disaster that occurred in Leyte Island, the Philippines, last February, killed about 1,100 or nearly all residents in Guinsaugon village. About 500 mm of extensive rains within first two weeks of February became the prime reason for the landslide. Experts say Leyte has a high vulnerability for landslides due to heavy rainfall, geological instability, and forest degradation in mountain slopes. In this research, some background information such as,cloud images, earthquake data, after disaster ASTER satellite image, and land cover information, are analyzed to explain possible gains for the disaster. Furthermore, research emphasizes the importance of finer rainfall observation network in landslide prone areas to upgrade the accuracy of numerical model weather forecast

Tree Planting Progress at Four Community Forestry Sites In Leyte: Some Observations and Lessons Learned

    No full text
This paper critically reviews tree farming and community forestry in four municipalities in Leyte. It examines problems and issues experienced by the local people in communities with respect to forestry, and makes observations about the progress of tree planting in both community and farm forestry. Field visits and discussions with local people, Local Government Unit (LGU) officials and Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) personnel were undertaken in each of the four sites. Some lessons are drawn and problems identified with respect to the development of community and farm forestry. Planting progress has been relatively slow at the four sites, and a number of difficulties have been apparent in relation to physical stand performance and property rights of growers. The importance of organizational assistance, livelihood support and availability of seedlings of suitable species is apparent. Regardless of the difficulties, a high level of enthusiasm exists for forestry projects, and the potential community benefits are considerable
