Lewis family oral history interview and transcript

    No full text
This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted as part of the Houston Jewish History Archive.Hanna Ballin was born in Berlin in 1931 to parents Ilse Blumenthal Ballin and Helmut Jacob “Jack" Ballin. When she was seven years old, she left Germany with her family on October 28, 1938, only a short time before the Kristallnacht pogrom, and they settled in Philadelphia. Bernard Lewis was born in Houston in 1927 to Lena Getz Lewis and Joseph Lewis. He attended San Jacinto High School and celebrated a bar mitzvah at Congregation Beth El. While attending optometry school in Philadelphia, he met Hanna, and they married in 1950. When they moved down to Texas, Hanna continued her studies at the Rice Institute, and the family settled down in Cleveland, where Bernard established an optometry practice. They had four children there and integrated themselves into the fabric of small-town Texas life. In the interview, Hanna Lewis recalls her memories of growing up in Berlin in the 1930s and her family’s escape from the Nazis. Bernard relates stories from his Houston upbringing, including anecdotes about racism and antisemitism. Hanna and Bernard explain how they met, married, and moved to Texas, and Hanna describes her experiences as one of the only Jewish students at the Rice Institute and recalls some of her favorite classes at Rice, which included studying parasitology with Dr. Asa Chandler. Bernard explains the difficulties he faced as a member of the Cleveland, Texas school board during the era of desegregation. Hanna, Bernard, and their daughter, Anne Lewis, discuss their experiences as one of the only Jewish families in Cleveland and the nature of their relationships with their non-Jewish neighbors
