No full textLos Estados del sur del Mediterráneo pertenecen a un “arco de cambio”, y no a un “arco de crisis”, como han pretendido algunos analistas. Desde este prisma, Lesser dibuja cuatro hipótesis sobre el contenido del diálogo y de los problemas de seguridad en esta región. La primera estudia la dimensión de la seguridad interna y las razones de la existencia de Estados “disfuncionales” en el Sur. La segunda resta importancia al fundamentalismo islámico como causa de conflicto; éste estaría más relacionado con preocupaciones tradicionales alentadas desde el extremismo nacionalista, no islamista. En la tercera hipótesis Lesser señala que los Estados del Sur se hallan inmersos en el proceso de incluir “nuevas geometrías”en sus relaciones de seguridad, ya sea con sus vecinos regionales o con la UE y la OTAN. La cuarta hipótesis coloca la interdependencia entre Europa, Oriente Medio y Eurasia ante los siguientes retos a la seguridad: la proliferación armamentista, el abastecimiento de energía procedente de la cuenca del mar Caspio y su acceso a los mercados occidentales, y los aspectos políticos de la interacción entre Occidente y el mundo musulmán. Estos retos se entrecruzan en el Mediterráneo y lo convierten en la dimensión meridional de la seguridad europea

No full textThe nucleus of this study is a reflection concerning the novel Atonement, by Ian McEwan, with the objective of verifying the possibility that this novel constitutes a vehicle for the reparation of human error. As such at first, this study sets out to give an account of the artistic trajectory of the author, with the intention of highlighting Atonement as a synthesis of Ian McEwan’s aesthetic proposals. Next, based on theoretical considerations, the study seeks to identify a possible view of this novel as a link between artistic experience and reality; focusing on the interweaving of discursive strategies and the metalinguistic dimension which discusses the issue of fictional truth. The research goes on to investigate those intertextualities, which attesting to this theme of reparation, and the ways in which they structure the main proposal in the novel. Finally, the research investigates the critical thinking, of the author in the novel concerning issues of man’s place in the world in order to discuss the manner in which social voices are assimilated into the work in focus; and how the novel attempts to condense existential and historical experience so as to transform these into the written word. Thus, the study proposes that the production of meaning for the contemporary world is one of the vital elements in McEwan’s fictional constructionEste estudo é, em essência, uma reflexão sobre o romance Reparação, de Ian McEwan, e tem como objetivo verificar a possibilidade dessa obra se constituir como veículo de preenchimento da falta humana. Dessa maneira, num primeiro momento, o trabalho explana a trajetória artística do autor com a intenção de ressaltar Reparação como síntese das propostas estéticas de Ian McEwan. Na sequência, a partir de considerações teóricas, busca identificar uma possível leitura desse romance como elo entre a experiência artística e a realidade, focalizando o entrelaçamento das estratégias discursivas e da dimensão metalinguística que problematiza a questão da verdade ficcional. A seguir, a pesquisa procura investigar as intertextualidades que atestam a temática da reparação e as formas pelas quais elas estruturam a proposta principal defendida na obra. No full textLa cooperación en el Mediterráneo puede convertirse en una prueba clave para determinar la calidad de la colaboración entre EEUU y la UE durante los próximos pocos años.
En la región mediterránea se concentran multitud de temas que preocupan a Washington y, a ambos lados del Atlántico, existe un interés real por aprovechar el “efecto Obama” y dar un nuevo impulso a la cooperación transatlántica. Las condiciones favorecen que se preste una mayor atención a la región y a los temas mediterráneos como parte de la estrategia de EEUU hacia Europa y Oriente Medio, así como de la relación transatlántica. La convergencia de los intereses estadounidenses y europeos hacia el sur y el hecho de que tanto EEUU como Europa puedan actuar con más o menos el mismo efecto en la región podría convertir la cooperación en materia de seguridad y desarrollo en el Mediterráneo en una prueba fundamental a corto plazo de la calidad de las relaciones transatlánticas renovadas
Kinstate intervention in ethnic conflicts : Albania and Turkey compared
No full textAlbania and Turkey did not act in overtly irredentist ways towards their ethnic brethren in neighboring states after the end of communism. Why, nonetheless, did Albania facilitate the increase of ethnic conflict in Kosovo and Macedonia, while Turkey did not, with respect to the Turks of Bulgaria? I argue that kin-states undergoing transition are more prone to intervene in external conflicts than states that are not, regardless of the salience of minority demands in the host-state. The transition weakens the institutions of the kin-state. Experiencing limited institutional constraints, self-seeking state officials create alliances with secessionist and autonomist movements across borders alongside their own ideological, clan-based and particularistic interests. Such alliances are often utilized to advance radical domestic agendas. Unlike in Albania's transition environment, in Turkey there were no emerging elites that could potentially form alliances and use external movements to legitimize their own domestic existence or claims
The impact of a child's death; An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis undertaken with five head teachers

This research explores with five head teachers their views and experiences of a period when a child was terminally ill and subsequently died when in their school community.
The participants were selected purposively from Derbyshire head teachers who had experienced the death of a pupil in their school community. After interviewing the participants using a semi-structured interview schedule the transcribed interviews provided the data for the research.
The interviews were analysed, using the methodology of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, to explore the experiences of each of the participants. Three superordinate themes were identified which were;
Emotions and their management
Interactions with the bereaved family
Interaction with the school community
Additionally, an overarching theme of Elevation was identified.
Each theme is presented and illustrated with abstracts taken from the original data. This is accompanied by interpretation which is also discussed and compared with knowledge from the existing literature.
The research has illustrated the complications that exist for head teachers in managing their emotions and the possibility of these emotions intruding on their personal and family life. It has illustrated the way in which the relationship between the head teacher and the bereaved family changes and how it changes their interactions within the school community.
This research led to the consideration of the influence of the cultural expectation enshrined in the saying, 'De mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est' (Of the dead, nothing unless good). Also considered is the behavioural derivative of this saying and how it shapes the responses that head teachers make when managing a school community when a child has died. It also led to the consideration of the implications of the research findings for any support professionals who help schools

No full textThis study is about Ian McEwan's novel The Children Act (2014) and seeks to analyze how the author discursively reconstructs the legal sphere in fiction. The probing of the relations between reality and fiction makes it possible to formulate questions about social references, especially regarding the way narratives produce meanings in the sociocultural scope and recreate current economic policies from reality. In addition, the article verifies the relevance of literature as a possibility for critical reflection on Law.Este estudo aborda o romance The Children Act (2014), de Ian McEwan, e procura analisar como o autor reconstrói discursivamente a esfera jurídica no campo ficcional. A sondagem das relações entre realidade e ficção viabiliza questionamentos sobre referências sociais, especialmente da maneira pela qual a narrativa produz sentidos no âmbito sociocultural e recria a política econômica da atualidade.
