A letter from Leon C. Larkin to Ralph L. Cheney written on June 3, 1918. In the letter, Larkin asks Cheney about his diploma that never got delivered to his home. Larkin asks if the College can resend another one.Ralph L. Cheney served as the head of Springfield College’s Secretarial Department from 1907 to 1924. Before taking this position, he worked as a YMCA secretary in Albany and Niagara Falls, New York

Prevalence of Plasmodium parasites in non-human primates and mosquitoes in areas with different degrees of fragmentation in Colombia

Parasites from the genus Plasmodium, responsible of causing Malaria in humans, are able to infect also non-human primates (NHPs), increasing the potential risk of zoonoses and their globally public health concern. This study aimed to determine the circulating species of Plasmodium in Anopheles and Ateles hybridus, Cebus versicolor, Alouatta seniculus and Aotus griseimembra living in fragmented forests within the Magdalena River valley, in order to evaluate the risk of infection to humans associated with the presence of NHP and Anopheles infected with Plasmodium spp. One hundred and sixty six fecal samples and twenty-five blood samples were collected from NHPs, while four hundred and forty two Anopheles were collected. DNA extraction, electrophoresis and sequencing were conducted in order to identify Plasmodium spp. Plasmodium falciparum was found infecting A.seniculus, while P.vivax/simium infected A. hybridus, C. versicolor and A. seniculus. P. malariae/brasilianum was found infecting all the four NHP species. Infection with P.vivax/simium was found in Anopheles nuneztovari, Anopheles neomaculipalpus, and Anopheles triannulatus. Furthermore, Anopheles oswaldoi and Anopheles triannulatus were found infected with P. malariae/brasilianum. The presence of Plasmodium spp. in NHP and Anopheles spp. in fragmented forests is a scenario that suggests important epidemiological implications and the associated risk of malaria transmission

A postcard sent by Leon C. Mann to the professors and students of the YMCA Springfield College dated December 28th, 1916. On the front of the postcard is a picture of French buildings in ruins. The title on the front says "Baccarat - Rue Grande", basically the main street of Baccarat in France. On the back of the postcard, Mann tells them his wish for Europe after the war's end.Leon Charles Mann came to Springfield College in 1906 and graduated with a bachelors in humanics in 1909. He was the general secretary of the Y.M.C.A of France from 1909 to 1914 when he enlisted in the french army to help out in world war 1. Later on in his life he became a pastor in Clairac (lot et garonne) France

THE NEXUS BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND INNOVATION. A LITERATURE REVIEW

    No full text
Knowledge management is the new managerial discipline whose aim is to support the processes of knowledge exploitation, memorization, re-use and learning. Therefore, it can be said that knowledge management has, implicitly or explicitly, a strong relationship with innovation management. Despite this fact, knowledge management and innovation management have developed into two separate fields and two distinct contexts of research. Starting from these assumptions, the purpose of this paper is to examine how the connection between knowledge management (KM) and innovation management has been developed in the last 10 years. In order to achieve our goal, an etic approach is employed which encompasses an external view of meaning associations and real-world events. The research combines the qualitative with the quantitative perspective and the whole multi-stage process is dominated by an inductive approach. The analysis focuses on 894 articles that were published in knowledge management and innovation journals, mostly indexed in Scopus and Thomson Reuters databases, during 2006 - 2016. The main results prove that there is a strong connection between KM and innovation management although the number of KM journals that approach topics related to innovation is higher than the number of innovation journals that focus on knowledge-related issues. The concept of "innovation" is by far the most used in the analyzed KM papers, while the term of "knowledge" is frequently used as a generic keyword in the Innovation papers; only a few papers are about a specific topic such as product development, project management, and process improvement - in the case of KM journals - or organizational learning, social capital, and human capital - in the case of Innovation journals. The research findings have both theoretical and practical implications. On the one hand, it synthesizes how the link between knowledge management and innovation management evolved in the last 10 years. On the other hand, it may serve as a handbook of managerial guidelines; it brings forward the knowledge management approaches and tools which can be used for product or process innovations

    (L) Train in oval with ""ONE"" above. (C) Rosebud in bottom center. This treasury warrant was issued in Centerville by Leon County. It is printed on thin paper. A simple line decorates each edge of the note. The word ''ONE'' is printed in the upper-left corner; a vignette of a train within an oval is printed beneath. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed in the upper-left corner; the number ''141'' is handwritten adjacent to it. the word ''ONE'' is printed in red ink in a decorative oval design in the upper-right corner. The month, day, and last digit of the year are handwritten; the first three digits of the year, 186, are printed. The word ''ONE'' is printed in a large outline font in red ink across the face of the note. a small rosebud is printed in the center of the bottom edge of the note. The following imprint appears to its left: Texas Printing House, Houston--E. E. Cave]. The note is signed on the recto by Simpson Robinson, Chief Justice, and Alexander Jefferson Patrick, County Clerk. Robinson was chief justice of Leon County (Sons of Dewitt Colony Texas). Patrick, a native of Virginia, was the first postmaster of Perry County, Kentucky, and served in the Kentucky legislature before moving his family to Texas in 1837 (The Patricks of the Republic of Texas). He was tax assessor and chief justice in Leon County as well as a land owner and farmer (Ibid.). BC-212.Alex. Patrick Co. Clerk.; S. Robinson Ch'f Justice

Frequency dependence in made simple using a multipole approximation

    No full text
In the approximation, the screened interaction is a nonlocal and dynamical potential that usually has a complex frequency dependence. A full description of such a dependence is possible but often computationally demanding. For this reason, it is still common practice to approximate using a plasmon pole (PP) model. Such an approach, however, may deliver an accuracy limited by its simplistic description of the frequency dependence of the polarizability, i.e., of . In this work, we explore a multipole approach (MPA) and develop an effective representation of the frequency dependence of . We show that an appropriate sampling of the polarizability in the frequency complex plane and a multipole interpolation can lead to a level of accuracy comparable with full-frequency methods at a much lower computational cost. Moreover, both accuracy and cost are controllable by the number of poles used in MPA. Eventually, we validate the MPA approach in selected prototype systems, showing that full-frequency quality results can be obtained with a limited number of poles
