Coherent Multistatic Radar Imaging
After a MIMO revolution in the telecommunications world, this technology becomes increasingly popular in the radar world. The radar end-users are demanding more and more of their systems, while the targets are designed to have an as small as possible RCS, which makes them more difficult to detect. With multiple transmitters and receivers it may be possible meet the stringent demands of the users. Extending monostatic radar functions like target localization and Doppler velocity estimation to a multistatic configuration will show some significant improvements in resolution and overall situational awareness. With multistatic target localization, the cross-range resolution can be greatly improved and the overall system is much less susceptible to dips in the RCS, because it sees the target from different angles. With multistatic Doppler velocity estimations, a complete 2D or 3D target velocity vector can be composed to aid tracking and imaging techniques like ISAR. Multistatic ISAR is a perfect example of the strength of combining multiple radars. It can be used to achieve a higher resolution for the same integration time as a monostatic radar, or it allows a reduction of integration time, with a resolution equal to the monostatic case. A new concept in multistatic ISAR is the interpolation of the ISAR data. In case the geometry between the target and the radars does not meet the requirements for coherent combining the images, an interpolation of the data can be done. Not only the geometrical requirements can be eased, also the integration time can be artificially increased, allowing the radars to spend more time on other functions. Another new approach to multistatic ISAR is the incoherent combination of multiple ISAR images. This concept is called 2D ISAR and allows the creation of high resolution images with low resolution surveillance and MTI radars. The main idea of 2D ISAR is seeing the target under different angles, so the amplitude of the summation of scatters will be higher than that of the sidelobes, which allows to estimate the overall target dimensions.TelecommunicationsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Technische InformaticaComputer ScienceElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
Stochastic tracking and deposition of particles inside a complex geometry
The development of new medicines for inhalation requires a series of procedures including in-vitro tests using special testing devices, which simulate the human airways to assess the local deposition of drugs. Such tests require samples of the new drugs and the series of tests are costly and time-consuming. A numerical model for the two-phase flow inside the first chamber of one of these special devices, the Twin Impinger (TI), has been developed. Due to the effects of drag, gravity and virtual mass forces, computer-generated particles travel through the virtual TI, which was discretised using a structured mesh. An Eulerian model has been used to simulate the continuous phase and a Lagrangian stochastic eddy-interaction model (EIM) has been chosen to simulate the behaviour of the discrete phase. Aiming to reduce the uncertainty associated to turbulence modelling of the continuous phase in a complex flow, detailed experimental data has been taken for the mean and turbulent air velocity fields. These data have been obtained by the use of a 2D Laser Doppler Anemometer, employing the continuity concept to generate the third velocity component. The interaction between particles was not considered because it was supposed that the particles were already dispersed enough inside the TI. Finding the Eulerian control volume where the particle was after each Lagrangian time-step was attained in a circular search around the previous particle position, in preferential directions, for the closest mesh node. The Eulerian cell values for the mean and turbulent velocity fields were assumed everywhere except near the wall, where the gradients are larger, and corrections in both the flow model and the EIM were required. The interaction between the particles and the walls of the TI considered a coefficient of restitution depending on the angle of impact of the particles, which were considered adhered if their kinetic energy after impact was not sufficient to compensate the van der Waals forces between the wall and the particle. A simple procedure to compute the distance between the particle and the near-wall velocity led to preferential deposition in lines orientated along the mesh, and the formation of unphysical particle clusters. Major improvements to the global model performance were obtained by the use of near-wall corrections in the EIM and employing a more elaborate algorithm for the wall distance. However, these changes increased the computational cost of the numerical simulations

Integrated flood disaster management and spatial information: Case studies of Netherlands and India
Spatial Information is an integral part of flood management practices which include risk management & emergency response processes. Although risk & emergency management activities have their own characteristics, for example, related to the time scales, time pressure, activities & actors involved, it is still possible to identify at least one common challenge that constrains the ability of risk & emergency management to plan for & manage emergencies effectively and efficiently i.e. the need for better information. Considering this aspect, this paper explores flood management in Netherlands& India with an emphasis on spatial information requirements of each system. The paper examines the activities, actors & information needs related to flood management. Changing perspectives on flood management in Netherlands are studied where additional attention is being paid to the organization and preparation of flood emergency management. Role of different key actors involved in risk management is explored. Indian Flood management guidelines, by National Disaster Management Authority, are analyzed in context of their history, institutional framework, achievements and gaps. Flood Forecasting System of Central Water Commission of India is also analyzed in context of spatial dimensions. Further, information overlap between risk & emergency management from the perspectives of spatial planners & emergency responders and role of GIS based modelling / simulation is analyzed. Finally, the need for an integrated spatial information structure is explained & discussed in detail. This examination of flood management practices in the Netherlands and India with an emphasis on the required spatial information in these practices has revealed an increased recognition of the strong interdependence between risk management and emergency response processes. Consequently, the importance of an integrated spatial information infrastructure that facilitates the process of both risk and emergency management is addressed.OTBArchitecture and The Built Environmen
