Replication Data for: Policy over party: Comparing the effects of candidate ideology and party on affective polarization

    No full text
At least two theories have been offered that explain the rise of affective polarization. Some scholars, relying on social identity theory, argue that as the relevance of party identification increased, Americans became more likely to see their in-party in positive terms and the out-party in negative terms. Other scholars argue that affective polarization is a reaction to increasingly extreme political actors. This study seeks to arbitrate between these two theories of affective polarization through a survey experiment which asks respondents to rate candidates whose party (or lack thereof) and ideology (or lack thereof) is randomly assigned. In line with the policy-oriented view of affective polarization, respondents reacted far more strongly to ideology than party, especially if it was the ideology of the member of the out-party

Replication Data for: Much ado about acquiescence .

Acquiescence response bias, or the tendency to agree with questions regardless of content, is a prominent concern in survey design. An often proposed solution, and one that was recently implemented in the American National Election Study, is to rewrite response options so that they tap directly into the dimensions of the construct of interest. However, there is little evidence that this solution improves data quality. We present a study in which we employ two waves of the 2012 American National Election Study in order to compare the reliability and concurrent validity of political efficacy questions in both the agree-disagree and construct-specific formats. Construct-specific questions were not only as reliable and valid as agree-disagree questions generally, they were also as valid among respondents that were most likely to acquiesce. This suggests two possible outcomes: Either agree-disagree questions do not negatively impact data quality or that construct-specific questions are not a panacea for acquiescence response bias

Tax and benefit policies in the enlarged Europe: assessing the impact with microsimulation models

    No full text
This book offers the first systematic assessment of income redistribution in Eastern Europe, within a comparative European perspective, and it demonstrates the future research potential of microsimulation techniques in this region. The book’s chapters are based on a unique instrument -- EUROMOD: the European tax-benefit microsimulation model, which has been enlarged to include Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and other countries. Tax-benefit models such as EUROMOD are computer programmes based on household micro-data, which calculate each household’s disposable income. Microsimulation can be used to evaluate the impact of current taxes and benefit policies on individuals’ incomes and work incentives. In addition, the model is designed to answer ‘what if’ questions about different policy reforms, allowing the potential effects of proposed changes to be studied before their actual implementation. EUROMOD goes one step further in the process of helping policy design, in allowing international comparisons between EU countries. This book offers an important demonstration of the effectiveness of tax-benefit models in presenting complex information in a concise and comprehensible way. It discusses what the barriers to their adoption to date have been and it looks at the possibilities EUROMOD offers to future policy-making in Europe

Modeling Duration-Based Costing in Activity-Based Costing Software

Can Duration-Based Costing (DBC) and Modified Duration-Based Costing (MDBC) be modeled into an Activity-Based Costing (ABC) software instead of using Excel? Prior research has used Microsoft Excel to model DBC and MDBC. This study builds on prior research regarding the use of DBC and MDBC (Lelkes, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017; Lelkes & Deis, 2013; Lelkes & Krueger, 2020, 2021) by demonstrating the integration of DBC and MDBC into an ABC software for illustrative purposes, called MyABCM, which is an ABC software that can be standalone or integrated into SAP, Oracle, and other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. The case information in this study is adapted from MyABCM training materials and is used to demonstrate how modeling DBC and MDBC appear in MyABCM. MyABCM is used in this study as an example of one of many ways DBC and MDBC can be incorporated into a software that can be integrated into an ERP system. DBC and MDBC can effectively be modeled into any ERP system or standalone ABC software

Replication Data for: The Hostile Audience: The Effect of Access to Broadband Internet on Partisan Affect

Over the last two decades, as the number of media choices available to consumers has exploded, so too have worries over self-selection into media audiences. Some fear greater apathy, others heightened polarization. In this paper, we shed light on the latter possibility. We identify the impact of access to broadband Internet on affective polarization by exploiting differences in broadband availability brought about by variation in state right-of-way regulations (ROW). We merge state-level regulation data with county-level broadband penetration data and a large-N sample of survey data from 2004 to 2008 and find that access to broadband Internet increases partisan hostility. The effect occurs in both years and is stable across levels of political interest. We also find that access to broadband Internet boosts partisans' consumption of partisan media, a likely cause of increased polarization

Tertiary S-C mylonites from the well Bajansenye, Western Hungary

Ultramylonites and margarite-bearing quartz-feldspar S-C mylonites, containing amphibolite lenses with symplectitic texture, were encountered in a borehole (Bajánsenye-B-M-I) close to the west of the Transdanubian Central Range Unit. These rocks demonstrate a ductile, horizontal extensional shear zone attaining a thickness of 300 m. Microstructural data, mineral parageneses and mineral chemistry of these rocks indicate a multistage metamorphic evolution, which is consistent with that of the Koralm-Pohorje basement. The youngest mylonitic event (Early Tertiary) took place in the Bajánsenye mylonites at 430-450 °C (greenschist-facies); it rejuvenated coarse-grained muscovite crystals of eo-Alpine age (Early-Middle Cretaceous). The radiometric data presented in this paper demonstrate for the first time an important Early Tertiary tectonic zone in this area
