Measuring cell surface area and deformability of individual human red blood cells over blood storage using quantitative phase imaging
The functionality and viability of stored human red blood cells (RBCs) is an important clinical issue in transfusions. To systematically investigate changes in stored whole blood, the hematological properties of individual RBCs were quantified in blood samples stored for various periods with and without a preservation solution called citrate phosphate dextrose adenine-1 (CPDA-1). With 3-D quantitative phase imaging techniques, the optical measurements for 3-D refractive index (RI) distributions and membrane fluctuations were done at the individual cell level. From the optical measurements, the morphological (volume, surface area and sphericity), biochemical (hemoglobin content and concentration), and mechanical parameters (dynamic membrane fluctuation) were simultaneously quantified to investigate the functionalities and progressive alterations of stored RBCs. Our results show that stored RBCs without CPDA-1 had a dramatic morphological transformation from discocytes to spherocytes within two weeks which was accompanied by significant decreases in cell deformability and cell surface area, and increases in sphericity. However, the stored RBCs with CPDA-1 maintained their morphology and deformability for up to 6 weeks

We assayed 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in an 82.5 kb region that included the TP53BP2 locus in 233 male gastric cancer patients and 390 unaffected healthy male controls. The allelic frequencies of 4 SNP within TP53BP2, g.206692C>T, g.198267A>T, g.164895G>A and g.152389A>T, differed significantly between cases and controls (p :5 0.0376). When compared to carriers of non-risk alleles, individuals homozygotic for each of the risk alleles had a 50% increase in risk of gastric cancer (age-adjusted odds ratio [OR] >= 1.48; p <= 0.0371). Furthermore, these 4 significantly associated SNP were in strong linkage disequilibrium (r(2) >= 0.51). Haplotype analysis showed that individuals with the CAGA haplotype, consisting of the risk alleles at each SNP, had a 1.55-fold higher risk for gastric cancer than individuals with the haplotype TTAT, consisting of the non-risk alleles at each SNP (OR = 1.55; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.13-2.14; p = 0.00705). Two other SNP were not polymorphic in the study subjects, whereas the other 3 SNP, located toward the outside of the TP53BP2 locus, were not associated with gastric cancer susceptibility. Although the location of the pathogenic variant is not yet known, our results suggest that the TP53BP2 locus is associated with susceptibility to gastric cancer in the Korean population. Study of Saemaul Undong and the Role of Government from the Perspective of Development State Theory : The usefulness of the developing country application
Since its inception in the early 1970s, Saemaul Undong(SMU) has played a pivotal role in bridging the economic growth gap between rural and urban Korea that eventually brought progress to the entire nation. SMU, a Korean community development movement, is not only recognized by the global community but also inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. This study seeks to investigate success drivers of SMU’s promotion processes from a role of government perspective. The research also intends to discover and propose implications of rural development processes in less developed countries via SMU of the 1970s from the viewpoint of the development state theory of Asian countries by Chalmers Johnson and Alice Amsden. Effectual execution of SMU is derivative of harmonic balance between mobilization and participation of the actors involved; the focus of this paper is rather on the analysis of the role of government centering around institutional mechanism and political and administrative efforts of the state. The proposed Globalization Strategy of SMU negates the traditional ODA model of material and human resource-based aid for rural development; rather it suggests emphasis on the role of government to establish an effective and sustainable administrative system governed by policy makers in order to achieve villager participatory rural development
