Detergency in Liquid CO2
In this dissertation we study Detergency in liquid Carbon Dioxide. Detergency is the cleaning performance of additives, surfactants in particular, in washing fluids. Liquid CO2 is under consideration, for environmental and toxicological reasons, to replace perchloro-ethylene as the solvent in textile dry cleaning technology. Inherent problems of such a transition were confronted with the methodology of chemical engineering design. The Basic Cycle of Design (BCD) approach was used as a pathway for designing a detergent. The BCD also establishes the structural framework of the thesis, which can, therefore, be read as records from a successful product engineering project, in which an effective detergent has been designed for a new dry cleaning solvent. The Dynamic Detergency Model (DDM), which succeeds to explain the role of surfactants in the washing operation, is used as a rational starting point for the design of a detergent in liquid CO2. According to this model, such a surfactant must be: sparingly soluble in the solvent, surface-active and able to form micelles in the solution. The different experiments carried out (solubility, interfacial-tension and dye solubilisation measurements), show that a number of molecules of the homologous polyoxyethylene/alkane series, generally described by the shorthand formula CiEj did indeed behave as surfactants and can be then considered detergents for liquid CO2. In the technical evaluation of the detergents, at laboratory as well as at semi-pilot scale, high washing performances were obtained. They are, indeed, as good for dry cleaning textiles as the present perchloro-ethylene (Perc) technology.Applied Science

Pharmacological and biotechnological in vitro approaches unveil the role of GPR17 signaling in regulating the timing of oligodendroglial differentiation
Background and Purpose - In the adult central nervous system there are many oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) that serve as the primary source of remyelinating cells in demyelinated lesions. Knowledge of the mechanisms regulating OPC maturation is needed to unveil novel pharmacological targets in demyelinating diseases. The G-protein-coupled membrane receptor GPR17, activated by both uracil nucleotides and cysteinyl-leucotrienes [1], has recently emerged as an important player in oligodendrogliogenesis [2,3]. It has been previously reported that GPR17 presence is restricted to NG2+-OPCs at early differentiation stages and is completely segregated from that of myelin proteins [4]. Here, we used purified primary OPCs from rat cortical parenchyma to assess the functional consequences of GPR17 modulation by either pharmacological or biotechnological approaches on the differentiation program of these cells.
Methods and Results - OPCs were exposed to the GPR17 agonists UDP-glucose, UDP and LTE4 for 48 hours. The degree of OPC differentiation was assessed on fixed cultures by immunostaining with an antibody against Myelin basic protein (MBP), a marker of mature oligodendrocytes. Data show that all these agonists increase the proportion of MBP+ cells compared to controls, suggesting acceleration of cell maturation by promoting receptor activation. Secondly, transfection experiments with fluorescent plasmids, enabling either silencing or over-expression of GPR17 were performed to univocally correlate the expression of this receptor with cell shape changes and phenotype acquisition during oligodendroglial maturation. Preliminary results show that suppression of GPR17 expression at early differentiation stages reduces the number of MBP+cells in culture, indicating that its silencing impairs the normal program of OPC differentiation.
Conclusions - Globally, these data point at GPR17 as a key regulator of oligodendrogliogenesis and at GPR17 ligands as extrinsic local regulators of OPCs under physiological conditions and during myelin repair.

The influence of steady blowing and roughness on transitional separated boundary layers
This paper presents the results of a study between two types of forcing, namely steady blowing and a tripwire, on the control of laminar separated boundary layers. The analysis focuses on the differences in the transition process between these two types of forcing. This effect will be studied using direct numerical simulation. The main differences consists in the coherent structures formed during transition and the overall kinetic energy growth
Reliability Case Notes No. 10. Board of Inquiry: Circumstances surrounding the stranding of the AutoNaut ‘Gordon’ on the Plymouth coast on 7th November 2014
The Marine Autonomous Systems in Support of Marine Operations (MASSMO) was a project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, United Kingdom.Autonaut ‘Gordon’ met all objectives set out in MASSMO mission plan. The vehicle has survived extreme storms in phase 1, whilst gathering valuable science data using state of the art sensors, such as novel passive acoustic devices. In phase 2, the vehicle was successfully deployed to detect tagged fish.In phase 2, Autonaut ‘Gordon’ was deployed on 4th November 2014, at 11.10 am, from Plymouth bay, and transited out 7.2 km East to position 50.337°Latitude, ? 4.13367°Longitude, to start ranging tests and the campaign. The mission was terminated, under NERC’s instructions, on November 6th. During recovery, in the early hours of November 7th, Autonaut ‘Gordon’ was grounded. This resulted in severe damage to the vessel. This Inquiry report looks at the circumstances that have led to the grounding of Autonaut ‘Gordon’ with the aim of diagnosing the most likely root cause for the accident. The grounding of Autonaut ‘Gordon’ was caused by severe weather. However, this report concludes that planning error was the most influential root cause for the accident. The last waypoint, WPT1, was approximately 0.5 miles from Shagstone and lee shore on east side of Harbour entrance. This has put the vehicle in a vulnerable position. The report also concludes that rushed planning was the second most influential root cause for planning error.This report presents analysis of all other potential root causes considered by the Inquiry panel and raises recommendations to mitigate the risk of marine autonomous systems grounding in future deployments
