Auctions with Almost Homogeneous Bidders
Get PDFWe deviate from the symmetric case of the independent private value model by allowing the bidders’ value distributions, which depend on parameters, to be slightly different. We show that previous results about the equality to the first-order in the parameters between revenues from the second-price auction and other auction mechanisms follow from the joint differentiability of the equilibria with respect to the parameters. We prove this differentiability for the first-price auction and obtain general formulas for the different first-order effects. From our results about the first-price auction, we analytically generate examples with continuous distributions where a stochastic improvement to a bidder’s value distribution reduces his equilibrium payoff. In another application, we show that, starting from competition among cartels of equal sizes, allowing in a small number of members from other cartels can be profitable only if the members or the synergies between them are strong enough.Independent private value model; auctions; asymmetry; first-price auction, second-price auction; differentiability; revenue equivalence theorem

Two Aspects of Sasakian Geometry
No full text66 pg.Sasakian structures are the counterparts of Kahler structures in odd dimensions. A Sasakian manifold is a strictly pseudo-convex CR manifold with a Reeb vector field that generates CR automorphisms. We first study Type I deformations of Sasakian structures, which amount to different choices of Reeb vector field on a fixed CR manifold. Here we show that the CR automorphism group of a Sasakian manifold is severely constrained by mild curvature assumptions. We then study products of pairs of compact Sasakian manifolds. Such products are shown to always yield compact complex manifolds that do not admit Kahler metrics, generalizing a remarkable construction due to Calabi and Eckmann. As a consequence, any product of two compact Sasaki-Einstein manifolds yields an Einstein Hermitian metric on a compact complex manifold which does not admit Kahler metrics. This result stands in marked contrast to the situation in real dimension 4, where LeBrun showed that Einstein Hermitian metrics on compact complex surfaces are always conformally Kahler.Advisor(s): LeBrun, Claude .
