The financial implications of firms business model focus within the bottom of the pyramid market segment in South Africa

    No full text
Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2010.The participation of businesses and major corporate companies in poverty stricken lower income markets has been met with opposing, and at times controversial views. The Bottom of the Pyramid proposition is one such idea that encourages business people to get involved in the market. However, the commercial viability of the BOP proposition has yet to be proven. The literature review from this study focuses on the ideas surrounding the appropriate business models that have been put forward through academic literature in order for companies to operate successfully in the lower income market segment. Consequently, the literature also focuses on the developments of the BOP proposition as it relates to the business proposed models. Specific attention is paid to the areas of innovation and replication as strategic focus areas within the BOP business models. The research seeks to highlight the fact that the BOP market segment is a commercially viable market for companies to pursue, and that the business model focus for companies should be centred around the dual application of innovation and replication principles as part of the company’s business model. The research study made use of interviews with expert executives and supporting documentary evidence from two case study organisations from within the FMCG industry in South Africa. The results of the research were documented and used to address the primary and secondary research objectives. The research findings ultimately enabled the author to construct a model, which companies interested in pursuing the BOP market could implement in order to operate profitably within the BOP market segment. A review of the book Kasinomic Revolution: The rise of African Informal Economies. Written by GG Alcock

    No full text
The author restates the need for Afrocentric systems such as building modern villages to accommodate Africa’s uniqueness. He condemns the practices of marginalising the informal economy as it contributes to countries’ Gross Domestic Production (GDP). GG alludes that jobs are now beyond the conventional “8 to 5 job with a payslip” and that communities of ordinary people should not be treated as “breeding grounds for employees”. Moreover, he highlights that the colonial and Western systems are unjust to the masses in developing countries. Africa needs no “bicycle lanes but hawker lanes” where they can trade closer to their clientele without being fearful of municipalities chasing them

Factors influencing consumer purchasing behaviour of Christian gospel music in South Africa

    No full text
MBA thesisSales of Christian gospel music have decreased in the last decade, meaning that consumers have not being buying the music as often and as much as they used to. This study seeks to identify the factors influencing the purchasing behaviour of Christian gospel music consumers, with the focus being on motivation factors. The aim is to establish a marketing strategy for this specific consumer. The research employed a company to collect data around Johannesburg. Furthermore, the author collected more data at Rhema South Church as well as from colleagues via e-mail. Three music store managers were randomly chosen and interviewed to find out what their opinion was on the issue. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected. It was found that Christian gospel music consumers are most motivated by Attribution and Stimulation. Therefore, the Christian gospel music consumer buys gospel music mainly to praise and worship God, to have communion and communication with Him, to be healed in their spirit when grieved and to be encouraged. It was also found that the marketing mix does further enhance the sales of gospel music, but only slightly. Piracy on the other hand, was found not to be a contributing factor to the decline of sales, as some might think. The key message is that the stakeholders (gospel music artists, suppliers of gospel music, music store managers and consumers) should all play a role in the increase of gospel music sales. Gospel music artists must become more creative and more original as this greatly affects consumer purchases, suppliers and distributors of gospel music must deliver the music to the consumer timeously and at the right price, and store managers must focus on promotion as a strategy to attract consumers to buy gospel music

DATA AVAILABILITY : All the data that support the findings of our study can be made available by the corresponding author, L.C.T., upon reasonable request.BACKGROUND : Outcome measures can assess the change in the health status of a patient in an intensive care unit (ICU). The Chelsea Critical Care Physical Assessment (CPAx) tool is used to assess the functional outcomes to monitor patient progression or regression in an ICU. OBJECTIVES : Our study aimed to identify studies that assess the functional outcomes of patients nursed in ICUs that use the CPAx tool. METHOD : An integrative review framework was used. Data were analysed in five steps to formulate a conclusion that aligned with the objective of our study. Data were extracted from peer-reviewed articles published online between 2013 and 2022. Databases that were used include Google Scholar, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and PubMed for reviewed articles. Keywords were used in the search strategy, and screening of abstracts was done to extract studies that met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS : We retrieved 41 studies, of which 11 matched the inclusion criteria. Data were thematically arranged into studies measuring the validity and reliability of the CPAx tool, using the CPAx tool to measure outcomes in the ICU, the tool used at ICU and hospital discharge. CONCLUSION : The use of the CPAx tool has no impact on measuring the hospital length of stay or quality of life. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS : The tool is comprehensive and enhances the accuracy of patient assessment.http://www.sajp.co.zaam2024PhysiotherapySDG-03:Good heatlh and well-bein

Thinking Through Food in South Africa: Identities, Embodiment and Representation

    No full text
When we sit at individual or communal tables, we consider each other and our senses before taking a single bite. We think about what brought us to the table, who we are eating with, what meal will be served and possibly even where the food is from. South Africa is home to diverse cultures, histories, food heritages, culinary landscapes, food-growing and food-buying environments that collectively spice the food eaten and enjoyed by individuals and groups in the country. Food is sustenance, an access point, a historical and cultural marker and so much more. Thinking Through Food in South Africa: Identities, Embodiment and Representation explores the ways in which individuals define themselves and their role in society through food. This includes its role in school-based historical curriculum, alternative food networks, community-supported agriculture, intergenerational rituals and exchanges and its influence on economics, politics, migration and social cohesion. More than a study of ingredients, this book holds and guides a multi-layered conversation about food as home, practice and community
