Designing 21st Century Standard Ware: The Cultural Heritage of Leach and the Potential Applications of Digital Technologies
This practice-based research investigates the potential applications of digital manufacturing technologies in the design and production of hand-made tableware at the Leach Pottery. The methodology for the research establishes an approach grounded in my previous experience as a maker that is informed by an open, experimental, emergent, and responsive framework based on Naturalistic Inquiry.
A critical contextual review describes the cultural heritage of Leach which, for the purposes of the research, is developed through the Leach Pottery as a significant site, the historical production of the iconic Leach Standard Ware and the contemporary production of Leach Tableware. This is followed by an examination of Potter’s Tools in the Leach production environment, and a review of makers’ digital ceramic practice.
The contextual review is followed by an explication of ‘standards’ presented through visual lineages of Standard Ware and Leach Tableware to define ‘standard’ at a design (macro) level, followed by an examination of how ‘standard’ operates at a making (micro level) level. This chapter presents new knowledge in relation to defining the visual field of Leach Pottery tableware production and its standards of design.
A chapter focussed on practice presents the outcomes and analysis of my engagement with digital manufacturing technologies which resulted in the development of new tools to support Leach Tableware production and the interrogation of Leach forms, in different mediums, which led to the creation of Digital-Analogue Leach forms. The practice culminated in the design and development of new 21st century Standard Ware: a range of 9 forms, called Echo of Leach, that were developed by myself using digital and analogue methods: the designs were realised by myself, the Leach Studio, and a further four makers. The outcomes of the research were presented in a three month exhibition at the Leach Pottery in 2013.
The conclusions of the research draw on the key points raised in the analysis of the practice and relate these to the approaches to making pottery that are highlighted in the cultural heritage of Leach in the contextual review. These are also discussed in relation to ways in which these findings could be taken forward into development of knowledge about Standard Ware, especially in a broader studio pottery context

The development of a resin-in-pulp process for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite leach slurries
The processing of laterite ores for the recovery of nickel and cobalt has increased as the reserves of exploitable sulphide ores have become depleted. The pressure acid leach process (PAL) has become the preferred option for the treatment of laterite ores.
Difficulties associated with the poor settling characteristics of the pulp in the counter current decantation (CCD) circuit after pressure leaching has resulted in as much as 10% of the soluble nickel and cobalt reporting to the tailings. The objective of this project is the development of an alternative processing step for the recovery of soluble nickel and cobalt from the PAL tailings using resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology.
Commercially available chelating resins with the iminodiacetate functional group have been studied for their suitability for the adsorption of nickel and other metal ions from PAL tailings pulp. The Amberlite IRC 748 resin was found to be superior despite its lower nominal loading capacity. The resin with the highest nominal capacity was observed to adsorb less nickel as a result of the adsorption of greater amounts of the impurity ions. The equilibrium loading for nickel on the preferred resin was found to be similar from the ammonium and protonated form of the resin although the kinetics of adsorption is greater when the resin is initially in the ammonium form.
A comprehensive study has been made of the equilibrium adsorption of several metal ions on the resin as a function of the equilibrium pH of the solution. A relatively simple model of the equilibrium adsorption which includes the effect of pH has been developed and the results compared with the experimental data obtained in the M2+/Na+/H+ system. The model which requires two equilibrium constants has been found to fairly well describe the experimental results.
A study of the kinetics of the loading of nickel and cobalt from both solutions and pulp has shown that the rate can be described in terms of a first-order approach to equilibrium. The kinetic and equilibrium parameters were used to simulate the performance of a multi-stage counter current resin-in-pulp operation A semiquantitative study of the elution of the adsorbed metal ions from the resin by dilute sulphuric acid solutions was also undertaken.
The technical feasibility of the RIP process for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from the PAL tailings has been successfully demonstrated in both laboratory and pilot-plant studies using a five-stage adsorption process. Important parameters such as the operating pH and the residence times of pulp and resin in each stage were identified through the batch test work coupled to the simulation procedure. The optimum pH for adsorption was found to be in the range 4 to 5 as this pH is high enough to maximise the adsorption of nickel and cobalt while preventing precipitation of nickel and cobalt as hydroxides from the pulp. A method for minimizing the competition from more strongly loaded ions such as iron(II) and chromium(III) which are present in the pulp was also developed in the initial laboratory phase of the project and utilized during the pilot operation.
Problems associated with the preparation of the pulp preparation, elution of the loaded resin and control of the adsorption train were resolved during several pilot plant runs on site at a local PAL plant. These and other minor improvements and adjustments to the operating procedure culminated in a successful continuous run for several days during which the target recovery of 90% for nickel and 60% for cobalt was exceeded throughout the run

O (nieco zapomnianym) mistrzu fantastyki.
The text summarizes the conference “The NeverEnding Michael Ende – profile, signature, fantasy strategies”, which took place on 8 November 2019 in Kraków. The author describes the organizers’ objectives, among which the main aim was to remind attendees of the profile and work of Michael Ende – a remarkable fantasy writer who is nowadays somewhat forgotten in Poland. The paper focuses in particular on the course of the conference, briefly summing up all the presentations and emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of the meeting. Based on the critical studies and further source literature, the author indicates some potential ways in which the reception of Ende’s work could develop

The economic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, a macroeconomic analysis
This report estimates the macroeconomic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy on the economy of New Jersey using the R/ECON™ forecasting model of the state’s economy. The model consists of more than 250 quarterly time-series equations and 30 employment sectors. The analysis takes into account both the economic losses resulting from the hurricane and the offsetting positive economic impacts associated with recovery and reconstruction spending in the months and years following the storm. However, the estimates of impacts depend upon the restoration expenditures actually being made. If the funds for these restoration and recovery expenditures are not made available, the offsetting positive impacts to the economy will not occur and the New Jersey economy will be significantly damaged. See Section 3 for estimates of the negative impacts if restoration expenditures are not made. This report was published as Issue Paper Number 34, January 2013, in Rutgers Regional Report
Apocalypse According to the Literary Vision of Michael D. O’Brien
The article focuses on Michael D. O’Brien’s novel trilogy consisting of Father Elijah: An Apocalypse, Sophia House and Elijah in Jerusalem, inspired by the biblical books, particularly the Book of Revelation. The analytical-interpretive and comparative method applied in the article reveal the scope and purpose of parallelism used by the author in relation to biblical characters, events and situations. This parallelism has been introduced in contemporary novels set in the twentieth century, especially at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Biblical references, plots, allusions and, above all, the biblical vision of the world and humans become a gauge that allows diagnosing modern reality and the rapid changes that occur in it. The recognition and full understanding of ideas included in the work are possible only after reading the biblical content inscribed in the novel. It forms the basis of the assessment of a model of the world in which spiritual reality permeates the visible realm, with a simultaneous occurrence of psychomachy. From this perspective, the warning that the writer addresses to his contemporaries becomes apparent.Artykuł dotyczy powieściowej trylogii Michaela D. O’Briena: Father Elijah: An Apocalypse, Sophia House i Elijah in Jerusalem, inspirowanej księgami biblijnymi, zwłaszcza Apokalipsą św. Jana.
