Characterization of two, desiccation linked, Group 1 LEA proteins from the resurrection plant Xerophyta humilis
No full textStudies on resurrection plants and other anhydrobiotic organisms show expression of Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins associated with desiccation tolerance. However, the precise role of these proteins has not been described. This study was undertaken to investigate expression, structure and function of XhLEA1-4S1 and XhLEA1-1S2, Group 1 LEA proteins from Xerophyta humilis, in order to shed light on their role in desiccation tolerance. Complementary DNA (cDNA) of these XhLEAs were cloned into bacterial expression vectors and the recombinant proteins expressed in E. coli. Antibodies were generated and used in determination of expression conditions and immunolocalization studies

No full textDon’t Eat the Raw Vegetables is a monologue adapted from the research-based theatre script Homa Bay Memories (Lea, 2013). Drawing on journals, photographs, and memories I developed the monologue to explore a moment of intercultural learning while on a teaching practicum in Kenya in 2004. In this article I share the monologue and a critical commentary discussing three insights into research-based theatre as a methodology gained through the process: 1) the impact of physicalizing research, 2) the opportunity to return to an experience armed with new theoretical understandings, and 3) the potential of the methodology to bring to light and express the fluidity of narratives and experiences

Provenance of impure calclithites in the Laramide foreland of southwestern Montana
No full textThe Sphinx Conglomerate is an uppermost Cretaceous and Paleocene(?) synorogenic clastic wedge derived from a Laramide uplift in southwestern Montana. Conglomerate petrology documents unroofing of the thick Phanerozoic section that covered the uplift. The active tectonic setting resulted in close correspondence between source lithologies and derived conglomerates and sandstones. Sandstone detrial modes determined using the Gazzi-Dickinson point-counting method further document the unroofing sequence -from Author
Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.
No full textMoving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. It also demonstrates the ways that Messiaen’s musical language can be used within jazz piano performance to provide a colour that distinguishes jazz piano performance in a competitive field.Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 201
The sexual excitation/sexual inhibition inventory for women: psychometric properties

The official published version can be found at the link below.This article reports on the development of a new questionnaire designed to assess the propensity for sexual excitation and sexual inhibition in women: The Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women (SESII-W). The theoretical model underlying this research, the Dual Control Model, postulates that sexual response depends on a balance between excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms and that individuals vary in their propensity for excitation and inhibition. This study describes the development and initial validation of the SESII-W in a sample of 655 women (M age, 33.9 years). Factor analysis identified eight factors and two higher-order factors: one related to sexual excitation and one to sexual inhibition. The measure demonstrated good test-retest reliability and discriminant and convergent validity. Our data underscore that a number of factors affect women's sexual arousal and these appear to be related to opposing processes of sexual excitation and sexual inhibition. Theoretical issues, possible gender differences, and the value of using qualitative data to inform questionnaire development are discussed.This study was funded, in part, by a grant from the Lilly Centre for Women‟s Health

The official published version can be found at the link below.This article reviews the DSM diagnostic criteria for Female Orgasmic Disorder (FOD). Following an overview of the concept of female orgasm, research on the prevalence and associated features of FOD is briefly reviewed. Specific aspects of the DSM-IV-TR criteria for FOD are critically reviewed and key issues that should be considered for DSM-V are discussed. The DSM-IV-TR text on FOD focused on the physiological changes that may (or may not) accompany orgasm in women; one of the major recommendations here is that greater emphasis be given to the subjective aspects of the experience of orgasm. Additional specific recommendations are made for revision of diagnostic criteria, including the use of minimum severity and duration criteria, and better acknowledgment of the crucial role of relationship factors in FOD

The author accuses Murdock of reductionism and Eurocentered tendencies, and defends his own point of view analyzing and answering to every critical assertion made to his work. No full textIn Whose Man in Havana? the author offers an unconventional, often dark, but more often hilarious view of diplomacy in settings as varied as Haiti, London, the Dominican Republic, the Balkans, Palestine, Paraguay, Guyana, and Kyrgyzstan, including covert monitoring of Soviet military operations in Cuba on behalf of the CIA with the blessing of President Kennedy and Prime Minister Pearson. In a career that spans the Canadian foreign service and international organizations, he was fortunate to be in the right place at interesting, if turbulent, times. Throughout the book he has focussed on the lighter side of people and places, but almost everywhere the dark side intrudes. Graham makes plain that the intersection of the two is frequently black comedy
