IMMEDIATE AND RESIDUAL EFFECTS OF EMERGENCY REMOTE TEACHING: A CANADIAN CASE STUDY

    No full text
COVID-19 had a direct impact on how British Columbia K-12 educational institutions provided their educational programs to students following Spring Break 2020. The Ministry of Education in British Columbia put in motion its continuity of learning goals by implementing Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) for all schools in the province. Teachers were required to completely shift their teaching practices and educational program delivery to satisfy the Ministry of Education’s new educational program delivery plans. ERT had an immediate and residual effect on K-12 teachers and educational structures, such as school schedules, timetables, individual education plans, and report cards. Limited research has been done on the topic of ERT in general, therefore, this study has provided valuable insights and direction for further studies. This pragmatic study incorporated a single case mixed methods study approach to explore the effect of ERT on secondary school teachers in a central British Columbia school district during and following the implementation of ERT. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected through an initial survey and a subsequent interview with volunteer survey respondents. The focus was on ERT and its immediate effects as well as residual effects on K-12 teachers in general and, specifically, secondary school teachers in British Columbia. This study found that teachers experienced notable effects in several areas including workload and health. Teaching quality was a concern as was use of technology, teaching online, and educational structures. There is a definite need for teachers to have technology knowledge and training, understand online pedagogy and receive online training, and have access to flexible educational structures, such as timetables, schedules, reporting periods and formats, and innovative attendance expectations.June 202

Understanding the uncertainties and errors associated to the main LULC datasets is a required step to facilitate their correct use, as well as to identify what could be improved in the future production of these products. CORINE Land Cover is probably the most well-known and used LULC dataset in Europe, especially valuable for the rich time-series that it provides. Despite being produced through a change mapping first approach, which tries to avoid technical errors and uncertainties in the temporal analysis of LULC changes, the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service distributes status layers of CORINE (CSL), which are not valid for change analysis because of their associated errors and uncertainties. The CORINE layers of changes (CHA) remove a lot of these issues, but do not meet the needs of many users. In Portugal, the national authority in charge of producing CORINE, the DGT, has implemented a backdating approach to produce consistent CSL layers that allow change analysis with low levels of uncertainty. Throughout this paper, we evaluate the changes that can be analyzed through all available CORINE layers in Portugal: Copernicus CSL layers; the national DGT CSL layers; and CHA layers. To this end, we aim to assess what type of changes can be studied through each type of layer, their associated sources of uncertainty and the relevance and utility of the Portuguese backdating approach to produce a consistent time-series of LULC maps. The results prove how the Portuguese CORINE layers distributed by the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service contain important sources of uncertainty, which however have been removed through the national backdating methodology. This methodology can be therefore exported for the production of CORINE in other European countries.publishersversionpublishe

Intellectual Structure of CORINE Land Cover Research Applications in Web of Science: A Europe-Wide Review

    No full text
The objective of this paper is to manifest the intellectual and cognitive structure of CORINE Land Cover (CLC) research applications. Data from the Web of Science (WoS) was used to delimit publication on CLC during the period from 1985 until 2019 (29th April), retrieving a total of 873 documents. Through author citations, the origins and the most influential papers were identified. The main lines of research were identified from word co-occurrences extracted from the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the papers. In the view of both structures, it can be concluded that CORINE land cover constitutes a relatively young set of scientific data, with a constant expansion and a strongly interdisciplinary structure. The development of this application is dependent on the knowledge of such research areas as geography, remote sensing, ecology, forestry, agriculture, engineering, optics, and/or computer science. We believe that this information could be very useful for CLC users, as it reflects a large-scale analysis of the research lines of CLC and illuminates how research has changed over time in diverse areas of applications. Moreover, this study is intended to offer a useful tool for the CLC scientific community, showcasing the main research lines and the most noteworthy papers. Finally, the methodology used in this study can be replicated in many other fields of science to explore its intellectual and cognitive structure

This report about the Dutch coast was written in the context of the experimental phase of the programme CORINE of the Commission of the European Communities. The programme CORINE (COoRdination of INformation on the Environment) is a programme for the gathering, coordinating and ensuring of the environment and natural sources in the Community. The objective of the project ' coastal erosion', as part of the CORINE-programme, is to provide a cartography and a database of the risks of coastal erosion in the Community. This report has grown out of the objectives of the project and the activities and agreements of the working group involved. However, some parts of the contents may be interesting to a wider group. In the text you will often find the notation NUTS followed by a number. The NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) is an interlocking system of territorial units at three levels. The used level III is the finest one.Corin

International audienceSeminar organized by the IRJS (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) and EHESS, as part of the lecture series "The Jurist's Arsenal," co-organized by Professor Florence Bellivier. The session will engage with the recent publication Being and the Sea: Toward an Ecological Existentialism (Paris, PUF, 2024), with the author, Corine Pelluchon, in attendance. Discussants include Yves Henocque, Chair of the Sea and Coastline Committee at the Fondation de France, and Frantz Mynard, CDMO at Nantes Université. This interdisciplinary dialogue—bringing together philosophy, maritime law, geography, and oceanic imaginaries—offers a critical reflection on Corine Pelluchon’s ecological existentialism. Addressing contemporary legal and environmental challenges, it examines the concepts of marine ontology and thalassopolitics, and how they contribute to a renewed understanding of being and our relationship with the marine environment.Séminaire organisé par l’IRJS (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) et l’EHESS, dans le cadre du cycle de conférences « L’arsenal du juriste », coorganisé par la professeure Florence Bellivier.

The aim of the author was to analyse land cover and its changes in the Łódź Voivodeship in the years 2000–2018. Based on CORINE Land Cover data and using GIS tools, analysis of land cover and its changes were performed for three intervals – the years 2000–2006, 2006–2012 and 2012–2018 – in spatial and quantitative terms. This approach allowed the land cover of the studied area to be characterised and the directions, intensity and spatial distribution of changes to be captured. In the study the density of changes was measured using the method of density distribution estimation with the use of non-para-metric nuclear estimators – the kernel function
