Wpływ nawożenia azotem na plonowanie i aktywność antyoksydacyjną lawendy (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.)
The aim of the experiment conducted in 2003–2006 was to estimate the effect of dose of nitrogen on yielding and antioxidant activity of lavender. The experiment was established in one factorial design in four replications and plot area 3.0 m2. Nitrogen was supplied in three different rates: as a preplant dose 50 kg N·ha⁻¹, or split application 100 (50 + 50) and 200 kg N·ha⁻¹ (100 + 100) with one top dressing provided on first week of May. Results obtained from two years of the study indicate that the most suitable for lavender yielding appeared to be nitrogen fertilization at the rate of 100 kg N·ha⁻¹. The results of the study also demonstrated that heavy nitrogen fertilization decreased concentration of phenolic compounds and have negligible effect on chlorophyll and carotenoids concentration in lavender flowers and increased content of phenolics, total carotenoids and chlorophyll a + b in leaves. The antioxidant activity of lavender flowers was higher in treatment fertilized with nitrogen in dose of 50 kg N·ha⁻¹ and decreased at the rates of 100 and 200 kg N·ha⁻¹.Celem doświadczenia przeprowadzonego w latach 2003–2006 była ocena wpływu dawki azotu na plonowanie lawendy wąskolistnej. Doświadczenie jednoczynnikowe założono czterech powtórzeniach, powierzchnia jednego poletka do zbioru wynosiła 3,0 m2. Azot stosowano w następujących dawkach: 50 kg N·ha⁻¹ oraz w dawkach dzielonych stosowanych przedwegetacyjnie wczesną wiosną i pogłównie: 100 (50 + 50) kg N·ha⁻¹ i 200 (100 + 100) kg N·ha⁻¹.
The objective of our studies was to develop effective, chemical methods of protecting narrow-leaved lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) against Phytophthora citrophthora with regard to their application. Under the laboratory conditions, activity of the tested agents was assessed on the basis of growth of P. citrophthora on a medium containing fungicides and the size of necrosis on the inoculated lavender shoots. In greenhouse tests growth of plants in the infested medium was evaluated. Laboratory research conducted indicated the highest effectiveness in limitation of P. citrophthora growth of Acrobat MZ 69 WG and Infinito 687,5 SC. In greenhouse tests, an evaluation of growth of lavender sprayed with Luna Senasation 500 SC and Python Consento 450 SC, carried out 3 weeks of cultivation, showed a significantly higher number of shoots in comparison with plants growing in the infested as well as non – infested control. All tested chemicals caused faster growth of the lavender. Change of the application method, i.e., foliar application of these products, substantially improved the growth results.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of soil and weather conditions during three vegetation seasons (2001, 2003 and 2004) on the yield of the narrow-leaved lavender herb as well as on the content and composition of volatile oils in the flowers of this plant. Field experiments were conducted on three 4-year old plantations of lavender in the 3rd year of cultivation. The site of this study was Krepa near Golcza, located in Miechów Upland. The yields of both the fresh and dry matter of inflorescences and flowers (spikes) of lavender were affected by: weather conditions during the vegetation seasons, size of plants, number of flowering branches and number of flower rings in spikes. At the same time, the weather and soil conditions had no effect on the total content of volatile oils in flowers of lavender. Howeyer, the relative content of major terpenes ie linalool, linalyl acetate, geraniol and borneol in layender oil was altered.
The influence of the time of distillation on the content and composition of the essential oil
isolated from lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) by steam distillation was investigated.
The maximum essential oil percentage (2%) was obtained after 2 hours of distillation, while
the minimum essential oil percentage (1%) was obtained after 40 minutes of distillation.
The chemical composition of the isolated oil was determined by GC-MS. Linalool (28.78–
30.68%), linalyl acetate (12.35–17.67%) and α-terpineol (7.57–11.49%) were the major components
of the analysed oil.Zbadano wpływ czasu destylacji na zawartość i skład olejku eterycznego wyizolowanego
z lawendy (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) na drodze destylacji z parą wodną. Maksymalną
zawartość olejku (2%) uzyskano, prowadząc destylację przez 2 godziny, najniższą (1%),
prowadząc destylację przez 40 minut. Dominującymi składnikamii wydzielonego olejku
były linalol (28,78–30,68%), octan linalilu (12,35–17,67%) oraz α-terpineol (7,57–11,49%)
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The Thursday Murder Club: Launching a megabrand author - a publishing case study
In 2020, the Christmas book charts in the UK made headlines: Barack Obama’s eagerly awaited autobiography, The Promised Land, was beaten to the top spot by The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, a debut cosy crime novel set in a retirement village. Not only did Osman’s book beat the former US president’s expected bestseller, it also broke records, becoming the fastest-selling debut crime novel of all time. Although Osman has a certain level of fame in the UK from his TV appearances on shows such as Pointless, his celebrity status does not entirely explain the novel’s huge sales. This article tracks the acquisition, publication, and promotion journey of The Thursday Murder Club in order to understand the industry and cultural context of its success and to interrogate the role of celebrity in the creation of author brands. The findings suggest that the unexpected scale of the success of the book owed to a number of factors, including in-depth editing by the novel’s agent, editor, and author to tighten up the plot, an extensive and strategic promotional campaign, the pandemic (which drove interest in the book’s genre and themes), and the quality of the writing. We find that the book’s success was accentuated by Osman’s celebrity status rather than being entirely reliant on it. This research adds to the growing scholarship on celebrity authorship by means of an in-depth case study and provides insight into the processes behind publishing a ‘celebrity’ book and launching a megabrand author
Author Under Sail The Imagination of Jack London, 1893-1902
In Author Under Sail, Jay Williams offers the first complete literary biography of Jack London as a professional writer engaged in the labor of writing. It examines the authorial imagination in London's work, the use of imagination in both his fiction and nonfiction, and the ways he defined imagination in the creative process in his business dealings with his publishers, editors, and agents. In this first volume of a two-volume biography, Williams traverses the years 1893 to 1902, from London's "Story of a Typhoon" to The People of the Abyss. The Jack London who emerges in the pages of Author Under Sail is a writer whose partnership with publishers, most notably his productive alliance with George Brett of Macmillan, was one of the most formative in American literary history. London pioneered many author models during the heyday of realism and naturalism, blurring the boundaries of these popular genres by focusing on absorption and theatricality and the representation of the seen and unseen. London created an impassioned, sincere, and extremely personal realism unlike that of other American writers of the time. Author Under Sail is a literary tour de force that reveals the full range of London as writer, creative citizen, and entrepreneur at the same time it sheds light on the maverick side of machine-age literature.Intro -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals
Mapping the Discipline of the Olympic Games An Author-Cocitation Analysis
The authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the generated clusters of authors and their topics
Author-reader relationship at the site of the work
Within the format of a critical exegesis and four original works of extended prose fiction, this thesis explores the interaction between the author and reader and argues that literary meaning is the outcome of shifts of power between these two entities. It concludes that because these shifts in power are orchestrated by the author, the author is relevant to understanding how meaning is produced
