    Rhinehart (Robert) H. Bollman enlisted as a Private in the Union forces of the Civil War at the age of 22. On March 1, 1865 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He mustered out on July 9, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. The diary begins on Tuesday, July 20, 1861 when Bollman leaves home for Camp Colerain to join Company D., Ohio 39th Infantry Unit. From there he chronicles his year as a Union soldier until the end of the diary on December 31, 1861
