Diversity interventions for a socially sustainable construction industry
No full textMajor construction sites in Australia have an above average presence of ethnic minorities. These groups and the interfaces between them require effective management in order to meet the social imperatives of sustainable design and construction. A survey of 1155 workers and 204 managers on Sydney construction sites respectively, found a significant level of normalisation of negative forms of cross cultural interaction. Yet it was also found that anti-racism programs are not currently a management priority and that they generally lack sophisticated community relations aspects. This paper presents the results of a desk-top study of leading global companies within and outside the construction sector which have won international awards and recognition for their cultural diversity strategies. A key insight is that the companies profiled see diversity as a key resource and as an opportunity rather than a risk which is best harnessed through long-term and on-going commitment of senior management. These leading companies also recognise that cultural diversity strategies operate at three levels - in terms of its relationship with its own workforce; its relationship with its clients and; its relationships with the communities in which it operates - and if properly managed it can be a source of competitive advantage

Brazilian Male Sex Workers in Termas: In and Out of Sex Work
No full textMale sex workers in Brazil often work in termas, which are bathhouses that provide strategic environments for social interactions and the provision of sexual services. The author notes that Brazilian male sex workers have begun to see their trade as a viable career from which they can exit and re-enter at will. This idea runs counter to a common generalization in other cultures that male sex workers are “trapped” in their chosen vocation. In fact, the Brazilian garotos are similar to independent male escorts and, like many of them, are often quite entrepreneurial. In the termas, the author notes, garotos establish friendships and social networks with one another and with clients. These networks, which are useful in the long run, are at the center of a potential occupational model suggesting the viability of male sex work as a long-term career in Brazil. Legalizing and legitimizing sex work in Brazil might provide male sex workers with more legal protections, more structured benefits, and greater social acceptance. Based on interviews conducted over ten years, this longitudinal study demonstrates that garotos are more diverse than is sometimes assumed. The author also emphasizes how they enter and exit the male sex trade with different motivations, ambitions, and options. Ultimately, the garotos’ experiences push against the assumption that male sex work is necessarily oppressive and that all male sex workers are forced into a victim-like occupational role. Without denying the challenges faced by all sex workers, including susceptibility to sexually transmitted diseases, increased alcohol and drug use, and violence, this study forcefully counters a tendency among researchers to downplay potentially positive aspects of male sex work. In doing so, it reaches a conclusion that many will find just surprising: For some men, selling sex is not just an occupational choice. Rather, it is their best (and most rational) occupational choice
Electro-taichi stimulator algorithm
No full textTaichi is an ancient Chinese martial art that attracted much interest due to its many health benefits. Many scientific studies have confirmed the effectiveness of Taichi as a therapy for the following illness: diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, heart disease, arthritis, etc. As it takes a long time to learn even the basic form of Taichi, bedridden patients cannot benefit from Taichi training.
Therefore, it will be useful to build a device that can bring the Taichi benefits to the bedridden. The device is an Electro-Taichi stimulator that stimulates biocurrent flows according to the movements of Taichi-24 form. While the implementation hardware is developed by another project, the main objective of this project is to develop an algorithm that mimics the movements of Taichi-24 form. The author uses an animation software Blender to animate the sequence of Taichi movements to validate the correctness of the algorithm. The output includes image and video files for the Taichi sequence of movements.
Besides acquiring animation skills, the author has the opportunity to learn Taichi-24 form and experiences the well-known health benefits.Bachelor of Engineerin
Report on industrial attachment with Leica Instruments (Singapore) Pte Ltd
No full textThis Industrial Attachment Final Report provides readers with insights into the work accomplished and experience gained during the author’s 22-week attachment programme with Leica Instruments (Singapore) Pte Ltd at the Assembly Department. The author participated in 3 new product start-ups (Zett-Blendenmodul, Discovery Turrets and Valentine Turrets). Reverse engineering and experiments were conducted; alignment and other assembly devices were designed and fabricated through sub-contractors. Assembly and functional analysis of the prototypes were completed prior delivery for qualification. The author had also participated in the manufacturing engineering management processes, such as product and process planning, of these projects. Projects tracking lists, build-of-materials, sequence plans, test protocols, project-meeting minutes were done during the attachment period. Finally, the author had the opportunity to participate in work processes improvement events like Standard-Work, One-Piece Flow and 5S, for Pluto production cell which exposes him to the various principles governing the concept of Lean Manufacturing

No full textInteractive wearable has been increasingly popular in the industry for the past couple of years. It has been instrumental in integrating technology into our everyday life. This project sets forth to implement a new interactive wearable that would benefit people. The device is an electronic nametag primarily for young children who are in their primary school education. The project is divided into three different part; hardware, software and integration. The author is in charged of the software programming aspect of the device, utilizing Android IDE (Android Studio) for the developing of mobile application and Parse for the database server.
