Pseudomonotonicity of an affine map and the two dimensional case

    No full text
In this paper the pseudomonotonicity of the affine map F(x) = Mx+q on the interior of the positive orthant of Rn is studied. A new characterization is suggested involving the positive and the negative polar of the cone generated by the set W*={z=Mx+q: x∈ intRn +}. The obtained results are applied to the two dimensional case in order to achieve a complete characterization of pseudomonotonicity in terms of the coefficients of M and q

Allergens from Edible Insects: Cross-reactivity and Effects of Processing

    No full text
Purpose of Review The recent introduction of edible insects in Western countries has raised concerns about their safety in terms of allergenic reactions. The characterization of insect allergens, the sensitization and cross-reactivity mechanisms, and the effects of food processing represent crucial information for risk assessment. Recent Findings Allergic reactions to different insects and cross-reactivity with crustacean and inhalant allergens have been described, with the identification of new IgE-binding proteins besides well-known pan-allergens. Depending on the route of sensitization, different potential allergens seem to be involved. Food processing may affect the solubility and the immunoreactivity of insect allergens, with results depending on species and type of proteins. Chemical/enzymatic hydrolysis, in some cases, abolishes immunoreactivity. Summary More studies based on subjects with a confirmed insect allergy are necessary to identify major and minor allergens and the role of the route of sensitization. The effects of processing need to be further investigated to assess the risk associated with the ingestion of insect-containing food products

Chicano Art as Alternative Media: Its Influence on US Popular Culture (and Beyond)

    No full text
In 1972, Chicana/o artists held the first Día de los Muertos exhibits in the USA to publicly honor Mexican heritage in a majority Anglo-American society. Day of the Dead altar installations and art became mediums for publicly communicating about Latino identities and political struggles. Weaving together various elements of the US Latino experience -- including Roman Catholic, Indigenous, and Mestizo artistic and cultural traditions juxtaposed with aspects of US popular culture, US Day of the Dead celebrations assumed an ideological and political value that far transcended the holiday’s original religious meaning in Latin America. This celebration of the dead had unexpected appeal with non-Latinos, who felt that mainstream US culture lacked public opportunities to collectively remember and heal after the death of loved ones. Today, the holiday is a popular autumn ritual in schools, museums, community centers and commercial venues across the US. Through various communication flows (the mass media, tourism, commerce), Chicano artistic influences have not only proliferated across the USA, adding a new celebration to the holiday calendar, but have also migrated to Mexico and other parts of the globe.Published in The International Journal of the Arts in Society by Common Ground. A novel medium-scale experimental setup to investigate backward erosion piping

    No full text
Backward erosion piping (BEP) is a phenomenon that can develop in the subsoils of river embankments during intense flood events, manifesting at the ground level as emerging sand boils. This process affects more than 130 sections of the Po river main embankments and many major streams in Europe and worldwide. This contribution aims to illustrate the experimental setup recently developed at the University of Bologna, for the medium-scale physical modelling of the BEP process. The experimental layout and testing procedures are briefly presented, along with some preliminary results from the ongoing laboratory activities

    No full text
