    Polymer multimode waveguide optical and electronic PCB manufacturing

    The paper describes the research in the £1.3 million IeMRC Integrated Optical and Electronic Interconnect PCB Manufacturing (OPCB) Flagship Project in which 8 companies and 3 universities carry out collaborative research and which was formed and is technically led by the author. The consortium’s research is aimed at investigating a range of fabrication techniques, some established and some novel, for fabricating polymer multimode waveguides from several polymers, some formulations of which are being developed within the project. The challenge is to develop low cost waveguide manufacturing techniques compatible with commercial PCB manufacturing and to reduce their alignment cost. The project aims to take the first steps in making this hybrid optical waveguide and electrical copper track printed circuit board disruptive technology widely available by establishing and incorporating waveguide design rules into commercial PCB layout software and transferring the technology for fabricating such boards to a commercial PCB manufacturer. To focus the research the project is designing an optical waveguide backplane to tight realistic constraints, using commercial layout software with the new optical design rules, for a demonstrator into which 4 daughter cards are plugged, each carrying an aggregate of 80 Gb/s data so that each waveguide carries 10 Gb/s

    Eco-Labels for Credence Attributes: The Case of Shade-Grown Coffee

    Using the case of shade-grown coffee, this paper examines the market impacts of eco-labels for credence attributes. First, the Mattoo and Singh (1994) test is conducted for the case of shade-grown coffee to investigate the market impacts of a shade label. This analysis in Section II shows that a shade label could pass the test, but the market impacts are likely to be minor. Section II also shows how to use estimates of supply, potential demand, and price elasticities of demand and supply to predict eco-label premiums in the post-label equilibrium. And second, given the importance of consumer demands for eco-label impacts, and since the theoretical foundations of demand for eco-labeled items are not well developed in the literature, Section III takes a closer look at the microeconomics of labels and consumer demand. A nested constant-elasticity-of-substitution preference structure is used to derive theoretically consistent Marshallian demands for shade and non-shade coffee. A numerical simulation shows how relative prices and consumer preferences for the credence attribute and variety are both important factors in demand creation of labeled items.Environmental Economics and Policy, Marketing,

    Algorithms and mechanisms for procuring services with uncertain durations using redundancy

    In emerging service-oriented systems, such as computational clouds or grids, software agents are able to automatically procure distributed services to complete computational tasks. However, service execution times are often highly uncertain and service providers may have incentives to lie strategically about this uncertainty to win more customers. In this paper, we argue that techniques from the field of artificial intelligence are instrumental to addressing these challenges.To this end, we first propose a new decision-theoretic algorithm that allows a single service consumer agent to procure services for a computational task with a strict deadline. Crucially, this algorithm uses redundancy in a principled manner to mitigate uncertain execution times and maximise the consumer's expected utility. We present both an optimal variant that uses a novel branch-and-bound formulation, and a fast heuristic that achieves near-optimal performance. Using simulations, we demonstrate that our algorithms outperform approaches that do not employ redundancy by up to 130% in some settings.Next, as the algorithms require private information about the providers? capabilities, we show how techniques from mechanism design can be used to incentivise truthfulness. As no existing work in this area deals with uncertain execution times and redundant invocations, we extend the state of the art by proposing a number of payment schemes for these settings. In a detailed analysis, we prove that our mechanisms fulfil a range of desirable economic properties, including incentive compatibility, and we discuss suboptimal variants that scale to realistic settings with hundreds of providers. We show experimentally that our mechanisms extract a high surplus and that even our suboptimal variants typically achieve a high efficiency (95% or more in a wide range of settings)

Green, describes an investigation of what concepts and intuitions concerning random processes are present in the minds of children of varying abilities across the 11-16 age range. The ability to list permutations, combinations and arrangements is also being investigated. The author states, "Over the past two decades the topic of 'Probabilityâ has been brought into the mathematics curriculum but it may be that this is more an empty gesture rather than a sound strategy." This article can help to alleviate many of the struggles in teaching probability concepts. The article is pitched at a more elementary audience, but is still a perfect resource for almost anyone teaching in the field

    In this article we show that there exist measurable sets W subset of R-2 with finite measure that tile R-2 in a measurable way under the action of a expansive matrix A, an affine Weyl group (W) over tilde, and a full rank lattice (Gamma) over tilde subset of R-2. This note is follow- up research to the earlier article "Coxeter groups and wavelet sets" by the first and second authors, and is also relevant to the earlier article "Coxeter groups, wavelets, multiresolution and sampling" by M. Dobrescu and the third author. After writing these two articles, the three authors participated in a workshop at the Banff Center on "Operator methods in fractal analysis, wavelets and dynamical systems," December 2-7, 2006, organized by O. Bratteli, P. Jorgensen, D. Kribs, G. Olafsson, and S. Silvestrov, and discussed the interrelationships and differences between the articles, and worked on two open problems posed in the Larson-Massopust article. We solved part of Problem 2, including a surprising positive solution to a conjecture that was raised, and we present our results in this article

    The aim of this thesis is to investigate the use of a bifilar pendulum for determining the moments of inertia of the TU Delft solar boat and to quantitatively predict the estimates. In the first part, several methods are discussed which can be applied in deriving the equations of motion of the pendulum. A new method, Kane's method, will be introduced. In the second part, this method will be used to derive the actual equations of motion. These equations are linearized around of the the pendulum's stationary positions to obtain expressions which link the moment of inertia about an axis to the period of oscillation of the pendulum about that axis. These equations are subsequently applied to the solar boat to derive estimates for the moments of inertia about the principle axis of the boat. The results of this thesis considers three different configurations of the bifilar pendulum with the solar boat suspended. One of these configurations results in the most accurate estimates for the moments of inertia, however, these have not been quantitatively predicted.
