Diagnosis in the everyday language of young people
The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of diagnostic terms in the everyday life of the youth, as well as the meaning behind these terms. The examination of the youth’s use of diagnostic terms will be compared with the public definitions and the expert defi-nitions. In addition to this, the study includes a semantic consultation which is the main focus of this project. Through an analysis, based on linguistic semantics and discursive psychology, it is shown that the examination isn’t in a position to draw an overall con-clusion on the use of diagnostic terms by the youth of Denmark. As this would require a varied and more comprehensive examination of the youth’s use of diagnostic terms. It is able to give a suitable idea of the direction to this conclusion, but it will not be able to generalize. Seeing that the semantic consultation is the representative for the youth, a temporary conclusion is that the youth’s use and meaning of the diagnostic terms is closest to the definition of the public and further away from the experts. Finally, this entails a tendency of the youth’s use of diagnostic terms in a different context, and sometimes with a new meaning, that differs from the experts- and publics definitions
