Fashion Culture: Treasures Afoot: Shoe Stories from the Georgian Era
On April 2, 2019, author Kimberly S. Alexander presented Treasures Afoot, her intriguing new book that interweaves biography and material culture with full-color photographs to tell how shoes were made, sold, and worn during the eighteenth century. Alexander traces the fortunes and misfortunes of wearers as their footwear was altered to accommodate poor health, flagging finances, and changing styles, raising fresh questions about everyday life in early America
Transitions in the temporal parameters of sensory preconditioning during the first year of life
Prelocomotor infants spend most of their waking moments simply observing their surround. Research using a sensory preconditioning (SPC) paradigm has revealed that infants form associations between events they see together. Currently, we examined whether older infants form associations in the same way.
In SPC, an association is formed when two stimuli co-occur (preexposure: A-B); association formation is confirmed when a response conditioned to stimulus A transfers to stimulus B. In prior research, 3- and 6-month-olds associated two puppets that were presented simultaneously. Research with rat pups found that formation of an A-B association is differentially affected during development by the timing regimen during A-B preexposure. Newborns associated two odors only when they were presented simultaneously; 12-day-olds associated the odors whether they were presented simultaneously or sequentially; 21-day-olds associated the odors only when they were presented sequentially.
The present study used a deferred imitation task to examine whether older human infants form an A-B association and, if so, whether the timing of the preexposure regimen also shifts developmentally. Six-, 9-, and 12-month-olds received simultaneous or sequential preexposure to puppets A and B (Days 1-2). Puppets were displayed simultaneously or sequentially, after interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 0, 7.5, 15, 30, or 60 s. We then modeled three target actions on puppet A (Day 3) and tested whether infants imitated them on puppet B (Day 4). Puppets were associated only when presented simultaneously at 6 months of age, when presented either simultaneously or sequentially (0-s ISI) at 9 months, and only when presented sequentially (7.5- and 30-s ISI) at 12 months. This developmental pattern parallels prior findings with rat pups and most likely reflects a shift from contiguous ("what goes with what") to anticipatory ("what comes after what") stimulus relationships. Nine-month-olds associated puppets after a longer ISI (15 s) with more presentations, revealing that experiential factors also affect association formation. At all ages, association formation was unrelated to infants' looking times, motor skills, or verbal skills. In sum, infants associate two objects that they merely see together, but the effective preexposure regimen shifts from simultaneous to sequential during the first postnatal year.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 55-61)by Kimberly Cueva

Depressive symptoms and parenting alliance as mediators between food insecurity and child behavior
The Family Stress Model provides a versatile framework for family research, and while researchers have recently used it to explore constructs among Latinx families, few studies have used it in research about rural Latinx families. The FSM is used to examine the relations between food insecurity, maternal depressive symptoms, parenting alliance, and child behavior. Data from NC 1171, “Rural Families Speak about Health”, are analyzed in a study using path analysis for 99 Latinx participants. Results will show that maternal depressive symptoms were associated with a decrease in parenting alliance. Implications regarding food insecurity, depression, parenting, and child behavior in the context of rurality and culture are discussed. This article is published as Kimberly D. Economic Impacts of Red Tide Events on Restaurant Sales
The economic impact of red tide events were examined for three Southwest Florida waterfront restaurants. Daily gross sales from January 1996 through September were analyzed using a multiple regression time series model to examine whether the presence of a red tide, as measured within three and six miles of the beach, reduced sales revenues. Preliminary results indicate that red tide blooms closer to shore had a significantly large negative influence on sales revenues across restaurant locations.Agribusiness,
AN ANALYSIS OF VOCAL STEREOTYPY AND THERAPIST FADING
A functional analysis for a boy with Down syndrome and autism suggested that vocal stereotypy was maintained by automatic reinforcement. The analysis also showed that instructions and noncontingent attention suppressed vocal stereotypy. A treatment package consisting of noncontingent attention, contingent demands, and response cost effectively reduced vocal stereotypy. The treatment package remained effective even when noncontingent attention was removed, making the procedure easier to implement. Also, the presence of the therapist in the room with the participant was faded systematically. After completion of fading, vocal stereotypy remained low during conditions similar to the no‐consequence phase of the functional analysis.Peer reviewedFinal article publishedAutismDown syndromeResponse costTreatment fadingVocal stereotyp
New Public Management in Charlotte, North Carolins: A Case Study of Managed Competition
The practice and study of public administration has long included questions of efficiency, effectiveness, and economy. In the literature of the last decade, the New Public Management (NPM) movement argues that government should be run like a business and that entrepreneurial-based techniques should be utilized in an effort to enhance government performance. The normative perspective, however, raises counter ideas. The primary purpose of this research is to examine the impact of managed competition, a NPM technique, on four primary study areas including (1) democratic governance, (2) the politics administration dichotomy, (3) organizational effects, and (4) accountability.
The study findings indicate that the economic model has had a significant impact on the four study areas to varying degrees. The theoretical propositions posed in the study center around principal-agent theory, public choice theory, and the market model and aid in reconciling the NPM perspective with normative considerations applicable to local government practice. Examining managed competition allows us to see how Charlotte has evolved in its attempt to meet demands from both perspectives.Ph. D
A Study of a New Synthetic Route to Amino Acid Thiazoles
iv, 95 p.This project involved synthesis of amino acid thiazoles
by the Kelly method from several natural amino acids not
