Varvara Stepanova: Incomplete Design History Podcast

    No full text
Varvara Stepanova was a leader of the constructivist movement and co-author of the constructivist manifesto. Described as “a frenzied artist,” she designed books, magazines, posters, advertisements, as well as textiles, clothing, and costumes. On top of that, she was an author and poet. Her design style and aesthetic was avant garde, modern, and often characterized by simplicity and geometric forms and patterns, but Varvara was never content with stasis. She constantly evolved her style and worked to develop new concepts and ideas. As a co-founder of the Constructivist movement, her work typifies the aesthetic and philosophies of Constructivism. While Varavara worked on many of her own projects, she also did many together with her husband, Alexander Rodchenko, another well-known Constructivist designer. Her work often gets linked to Rodchenko’s, and it’s Rodchenko who gets mentioned in histories of graphic design and credit for designs that should be attributed to Stepanova as well. At a time when women were largely still expected to be no more than wives and mothers, Stepanova was a woman who made an unmistakable mark on art and design.NoUniversity of Central Oklahoma. Cross-border Tourism in the Russian Northwest: General Trends and Features of Development

    No full text
As a result of the socioeconomic transformations in the Russian Federation, the openness of border regions under the influence of integration process taking place in the world community facilitates tourist mobility between neighbouring countries. The author describes an approach that considers the border regions of Northwest Russia as attractive destinations for tourists from neighbouring countries. The development of cross-border tourism as a specific form characteristic of only border regions is one of key areas of tourism development in these regions. An assessment of the prospects of developing cross-border tourism in the border regions of Russian Northwest becomes a relevant research objective. The author identifies the specific features and general trends in the development of cross-border tourism in the Russian regions in question. It is proven that Russian border regions are less competitive than the territories of neighbouring states in terms of the development of crossborder tourism. The author also points out to the avenues of stimulating cross-border tourism development in Russian border regions

Art return rates from old master paintings to contemporary art

We study return rates on art investment using a complete dataset on repeated sales for Old Master Paintings, Modern art and Contemporary art auctioned worldwide at Christie's and Sotheby's from 2000 to 2018. We show that return rates do not depend systematically on past prices or the place of sale, but we emphasize substantial differences in returns across sectors. We also control for changes in transaction costs (buyers' premiums and artists' resale rights), characteristics of the sale (evening sales, price guarantees and past bought-ins) and news on the lots (changed attributions, public exhibitions or death of the author) that appear reflected in art returns. We confirm the absence of masterpiece effects in American, Chinese and Ethnic art. Finally, using historical data on prices during Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical periods, we find evidence that price changes are independent from initial prices also in the long run

Asymptotic Stress Field in the Vicinity of the Mixed-Mode Crack in Damaged Materials Under Creep Conditions

    No full text
AbstractThe creep crack problems in damaged materials under mixed mode loading under creep-damage coupled formulation are considered. The class of the self-similar solutions to the plane creep crack problems in a damaged medium under mixed-mode loading is given. With the similarity variable and the self-similar representation of the solution for a power-law creeping material and the Kachanov- Rabotnov power-law damage evolution equation the near crack-tip stresses, creep strain rates and continuity distributions for plane stress conditions are obtained. The similarity solutions are based on the hypothesis of the existence of the completely damaged zone near the crack tip. It is shown that the asymptotical analysis of the near crack-tip fields gives rise to the nonlinear eigenvalue problems. The technique permitting to find all the eigenvalues numerically is proposed and numerical solutions of the nonlinear eigenvalue problems arising from the mixed-mode crack problems in a power-law medium under plane stress conditions are obtained. Using the approach developed the eigenvalues different from the eigenvalues corresponding to the Hutchinson-Rice-Rosengren (HRR) problem are found. Having obtained the eigenspectra and eigensolutions the geometry of the completely damaged zone in the vicinity of the crack tip is found for all values of the mixity parameter

Complete Williams Asymptotic Expansion Near The Crack Tips of Collinear Cracks of Equal Lengths in an Infinite Plane Medium

    No full text
AbstractThe study is aimed at analytical determination of coefficients in crack tip stress expansions for two collinear finite cracks of equal lengths in an infinite plane medium. The study is based on the solutions of the complex variable theory in plane elasticity theory. Multiparametric presentation of the stress filed near the crack tips in the infinite plate with two collinear cracks of finite lengths is obtained and analyzed for a full range of mixed mode loading from pure tension to pure shear. The method of analytical determination of coefficients of the complete Williams asymptotic expansion of the stress field near the crack tip is presented. The influence of consideration of various numbers of terms of the series expansion on the stress distribution is discussed, and the significance of the multi-parameter fracture mechanics approach is emphasized

Rasma Stepanova. Strādājot pie izvēlētās tēmas, autore balstījās uz šādu teorētiķu atzinumiem, kā I. Kāposta, A. Markova, M. Skatkins, pedagoģiskās aprobācijas rezultātā, pierādot savas tēmas aktualitāti.The theme of this diploma paper is games as a way of forming motivation teaching Latvian as the second language in 6th form. The author indicates that the chosen theme of the diploma paper is essential in nowadays school. Language games help to make the process of teaching the second language more interesting and exciting, lessness the fear of pupils and the fear of making a mistake when using the language and, in fact, making it easier to learn. Games involve students into the working process that is necessary to successfully acquire the language. Writing this paper the author researched the works of different theoretics, such as I. Kaposta, A. Markova, M. Skatkins, at the same time putting the theories into practice, proving the importance of the chosen theme

Taxonomic composition of zooplankton and frequency of occurrence of the taxa (% of samples) in the small river of the industrial zone of Volga region

    No full text
The presented species list of zooplankton is a summary of long-term observations that took place on the small river Stepnoy Zai, situated in the industrial zone of the Middle Volga region of Russia. The sampling took place in May, July, and September yearly from 2008 to 2019 from 4 sampling stations along the river Stepnoy Zai. The sampling stations were situated upstream and downstream of municipal wastewater discharges of the four cities located in the upper (Bugulma, Leninogorsk), middle (Almetievsk), and lower (Zainsk) reaches of the river. Sampling was performed using Apstein Net from the upper water horizons. Samples were concentrated to 100 ml, and fixed with 4% formaldehyde solution
