Structural changes in metals consumption
For 15 years the metals market has been characterized by slow growth - in some cases, even decline - in consumption. To test the proposition that structural changes in demand were the main cause of the slowdown, the author - drawing on U.S. data - uses an extended metals demand model that recognizes energy, labor, capital, and other materials as major inputs. The traditional model explains metals consumption in terms only of output and the prices of metal and its substitutes. It is inadequate to address the issue of structural change because it ignores other factors of production, such as energy, which have experienced dramatic changes. With the extended model, the null hypothesis of no structural change cannot be rejected for most metals. With the conventional model, the null hypothesis of no structural change is strongly rejected. Results with the extended model show that the downturn can be explained mostly by changes in the input variables, particularly such nonmetal inputs as capital and energy, which are much more important cost items than metals and have undergone drastic cost changes over the period.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Montreal Protocol,Mining&Extractive Industry (Non-Energy),Primary Metals
"Edicion Critica Del ""pusilipo"" De Cristobal Suarez De Figueroa"
The Pusilipo by Cristobal Suarez de Figueroa had never been studied, nor edited critically, since it was published in 1629.The purpose of this dissertation is to offer my own edition of the Pusilipo, which is the first modern attempt to edit the text in a modern form. Completing the edition is the critical apparatus, consisting of thorough textual and explanatory notes, and a up to date bibliography. To obtain this result the dissertation is in two parts. Part one consists of an introduction with an overview of the author's life and works, followed by a discussion of the style, a description of the environment in which he wrote, a synopsis of the subject, a bibliography about the author and a general bibliography. Part two is a critical edition of the Pusilipo and includes textual and explanatory footnotes. Thus, my dissertation seeks to fill a gap in the Spanish Golden Age Literature, and restore the figure of the author, neglected for so many years, to his rightful place.Made available in DSpace on 2015-05-13T15:45:49Z (GMT). Credit rationing, tenancy, productivity, and the dynamics of inequality
Why, when given the same resources, might productivity be lower on farms operated through sharecropping than on owner-run farms? The reason is that sharecropping, much less wage contracts, cannot overcome the divergence of interests between those who till the land and those who own it. Only land redistribution can do that. This paper presents notes toward a general equilibrium theory of land tenancy that suggest how changes in technology and publicly provided infrastructure can affect the equilibrium distribution of land in countries where credit is rationed. When credit to famers is rationed, changes in technology can increase the inequality in landholdings - with a long term increase in share tenancy. This is turn might reduce productivity, at least partially offsetting the initial improvements. The paper suggests that the development of effective rural financial institutions would reduce the likelihood of these negative effects on equality and productivity. It further cautions though that past attempts in creating such institutions have failed because of a lack of accountability and of enforcement procedures.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Growth,Municipal Financial Management

Cristobal Lozano's ideology in Soledades de la vida y desengaños del mundo
textThis work analyzes Cristobal Lozano's (1609-2667) novel: Soledades de la Vida y Desengaños del Mundo (1658) as a representative work of the author's moralizing ideology related to the Counter Reformation. Lozano was one of the most popular writers in Spain during the second part of the seventeenth century. Today, this writer is almost forgotten and finding the majority of his works is becoming difficult. Part of this dissertation, addresses this issue by locating a large section of his literary work, something that has not been done since the beginning of the twentieth century. Another important aspect of this investigation is that it locates the author in the literary map in relation to other outstanding writers such as Cervantes, Calderon de la Barca and other important previous authors. This research also demonstrates, through the literary analysis, some of the most important aspects of the Barroque period as well as the mentality of many of those who lived during that time period in Spain. This literary analysis attempts to show the reader that Lozano was indeed a writer who knew his craft, one who knew what the Spanish Golden Age audience wanted at the same time he pushed his own ideological religious agenda.Spanish and Portugues
Fluorescence imaging for whole slide scanning using LED-based color sequential illumination
In the field of pathology there is an ongoing transition to the use of Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) systems which scan tissue slides at intermediate resolution (0∼.25 μm) and high throughput (15mm2=min) to digital image files. Most scanners currently on the market are line-sensor based push-broom scanners for three-color (RGB) brightfield imaging. Adding the ability of fluorescence imaging opens up a wide range of possibilities to the field, in particular the use of specific molecular (proteins, genes) imaging techniques. We propose an extension to fluorescence imaging for a highly efficient WSI systems based on a line scanning technique using multi-color led epi-illumination. The use of multi-band dichroics eliminates the need for filter wheels or any other moving parts in the system, the use of color sequential illumination with leds enables imaging of multiple color channels with a single sensor. Our approach offers a solution to fluorescence WSI systems that is technologically robust and cost-effective. We present design details of a four-color led based epi-illumination with a quad-band dichroic filter optimized for leds. We provide a thorough analysis regarding the obtained optical and spectral efficiency. The primary throughput limitation is the minimum Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) given the available optical power in the illumination etendue, and indicates that a throughput on the order of 1000 lines/sec can be obtained.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.ImPhys/Computational ImagingImPhys/Imaging Physic

Interpolated Editorial Design
Established practices of editorial design for fiction and non-fiction primarily focus on the visual communication and curation of meaning to a user of a given text. This is usually accomplished via art direction, delivery platform, and overall form as defined by a designer. While within these parameters exist opportunities for designers to make significant interventions in a text, a text’s content proper is primarily defined by editors earlier in the book publishing process. According to this model, the relationship between editorial and design is vertical and linear in nature: editors handle initial publishing interventions in the text, while designers later intervene as facilitators of form and production. This thesis project challenges these established industry practices with regards to the publishing process of new editions of long-form literary classics: it defines new editorial roles for designers and proposes a collaborative and cyclical publishing process wherein the designer further defines the meaning of the text. Moreover, through consultation with professionals in literary education, extensive case studies, user group interviews and profiles, and experimental prototyping, this thesis defines new ways for designers to serve contemporary users of textual artifacts; these users engage in an increasingly multimedia environment of texts, images as texts, and texts as images. Prototyping of this project has yielded a new edition of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and an editorial design system that the researcher calls Interpolated Editorial Design, or InterED.Personal, noncommercial use of this item is permitted
