Hunter S. Thompson, Transmetropolitan, and the Evolution from Author to Character

This thesis examines American author Hunter S. Thompson, in the context of his own works – primarily Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary– as well as the representation of him as a character in the graphic text Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis. The evolution of Thompson from author to character and the development of that character in his own works is examined, as well as how this development allowed for his character to be fully realised in a completely fictional world. In turn, the fully developed use of Thompson’s character is the starting point for my analysis of Transmetropolitan could potentially be read as a work of New Journalism, albeit a fictional one. The first chapter examines how Thompson began writing himself as a character in his early fictional work The Rum Diary. Though largely overlooked by critics because of its long delayed publication and the focus on the more flashy and better known Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Rum Diary is critical to Thompson’s development of himself as a character in his works in particular, and to his development as an author in general. Though The Rum Diary is ostensibly a purely fictional novel, this chapter examines how the character Paul Kemp is actually largely autobiographical, and how Kemp is an early version of the same character Thompson uses in his later nonfiction. I then analyse the development of that nonfiction version, Raoul Duke, in Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. As The Rum Diary is not actually purely fictional, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is not actually completely nonfictional. Thompson, as this chapter shows, did not believe in the divide between fact and fiction, and he uses the character he develops in Raoul Duke to write about himself while creatively embellishing the truth. I then look at how Thompson wrote himself so strongly into his character that he became inextricably viewed as actually being Raoul Duke, and how that character was in turn viewed and written about. The second chapter examines the legacy of Thompson’s fully formed self-characterisation, as it is picked up by another author and written in the fully fictional context of the graphic novel series Transmetropolitan. I consider how Transmetropolitan’s main character Spider Jerusalem continues Thompson’s self-as-character through his characterisation, behaviour, and language. Furthermore I analyse how, within the world of the series, Spider as a journalist continues Thompson’s legacy as a writer. The third and final chapter examines how Spider’s characterisation as a continuation of Thompson is an important contextual factor for considering Transmetropolitan as a work of New Journalism. I consider the connection to Thompson, the content of Spider’s articles, and the format in which the articles are depicted in the graphic nove

Avancer pour ne pas tomber : silhouettes of renewal in the autobiographically-inspired works of J.M.G. Le Clezio

Contemporary French novelist Jean- Marie Gustave Le Clezio has been publishing novels, short stories, essays, and translations for nearly four decades and has been writing since the age of seven. In 1963, he received the prestigious Prix Renaudot for his first published novel, Le Proces- verbal, and in 1980, the Academie française awarded him the Grand Prix Paul Morand for the novel Desert. However, in that vast oeuvre, until the mid- eighties, the author had never written about those most personal subjects: his life and his family. In 1985, 1986, 1991, and 1995, the author published a series of personally ground- breaking novels in which his own life and those of his family members provided the inspiration for the stories. They are, in order of publication dates, Le chercheur d \u27or, Voyages a Rodrigues, Onitsha, and La quarantaine. The autobiographical quality of these novels allows the reader access not only to fiction as an end product, but also to the creative process behind it. In the cases of the two novels inspired by the lives of the author\u27s grandparents, Le chercheur d\u27or and La quarantaine, we can read not only the stories from the past, but also the accounts of the author\u27s own journeys of reconstructing another time and writing the story of another. In La quarantaine, that process is part of the novel itself; for Le chercheur d \u27or, the author\u27s search for the past is chronicled in the journal Voyages a Rodrigues. Onitsha is based upon the author\u27s own experiences. By reading of the processes by which stories are discovered, continued, and transformed, the texts provide a model for the creative process and a model for renewal. Through language, structure, and theme, these four works emphasize the desperate need of modern societies for renewal, to live in a way that is more fully human. Creating and telling stories is one important source of renewal found in the texts, as is the willingness to meet others\u27 practical needs, not with regard to who they are, but rather only to what they need. This way of living, which includes an attitude of generosity with resources and a recognition of the brevity of human life, is central to the call for renewal that may be found in these texts. Our participation is encouraged through their structure; the characters, narrators, and author expose both the sad results of stagnation and the life-affirming possibilities of transformation. In each of them, we find a call to renewal

The Importance of Sustainability within the Fashion Industry

Blogging made its debut in 1993 and from that point on the internet would change forever. This project is a lifestyle blog that will highlight the diversity of the word sustainability, focus on the final product and the sustainable methods or practices to get to that final product and dive into the history of blogging and the history of fashion sustainability. This entire project will showcase specific items of women\u27s clothing (the final product) and the sustainable methods or processes involved in creating those final products. This project specifically defines the similarities and differences between the terms eco-friendly, sustainable, green, and greenwashing. Throughout this project, the author highlights important dates in the history of blogging and the history of fashion sustainability. The first term for a blog was called a \u27weblog\u27 meaning a documentation or log on the World Wide Web. This blog is an extension of the author\u27s personality and style in an online platform and thus took extensive behind-the-scenes research to make everything right. The behind-the scenes qualitative data collected was comparing and contrasting specific details among 10 to 15 different blogs. This blog is an extension of the author\u27s personality and style in an online platform and thus took extensive behind-the-scenes research to make everything right. The author\u27s innovative contribution to this industry will be to educate her readers so they can make more sustainable choices in their daily life. All of the data collected for this project was from qualitative sources. I used a document analysis method to collect and compare data from my favorite fashion and lifestyle blogs. This project is a continuation of the author\u27s lifestyle blog focusing on sustainable brands, women\u27s fashions and beauty, and lifestyle finds. From graduate seminars I and II, the author discussed both the history of blogging and the history of sustainability. The author\u27s main focus is on sustainability items and clothing pieces (the final product) and methods and practices used to reach that final product

Molecular weight and end capping effects on the optoelectronic properties of structurally related ‘heavy atom’ donor–acceptor polymers

Two donor–acceptor polymers containing either Si or Ge in the donor and Se in the acceptor, poly[(4,4′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole)-4,7-diyl] and poly[(4,4′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]germole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,1,3-benzoselena diazole)-4,7-diyl], were synthesized by microwave assisted polymerization. These polymer structures are attractive because they combine the red light absorption characteristics of the Se acceptor, with high charge carrier mobility inherent to the Si- or Ge-containing donor. Here we study the effects of molecular weight and end capping on the photophysical, morphological, and photovoltaic properties. The solution and film absorption profiles and solution onset are dictated by molecular weight, whereas the subtler heteroatom effect dictates the absorption onset in the polymer films. Molecular weight appears to affect polymer absorption to the greatest degree in a medium molecular weight regime and these effects have a significant aggregation component. Highlighting the red-light absorption of the Se-acceptor monomer, both Si-donor and Ge-donor polymer devices display improved photon harvesting beyond 850 nm relative to their S-acceptor analogues. Higher hole mobility relative to the C-donor/Se-acceptor polymer analogue indicates successful integration of heavy atom donor properties with the 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole acceptor. Molecular weight invokes the greatest change on polymer/fullerene blend morphology, followed by phenyl end capping, and finally by the Si or Ge heteroatom.Peer reviewedFinal article publishe

    Monsters: Classic to Contemporary Symbols

    No full text
Monsters are a timeless feature of human imagination. Images of monsters have emerged in almost every culture, from the Anglo Saxon poem Beowulf to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: A Modern Prometheus. Most of the readers in the US, the author contends, would agree with her that they had personally grown up with monsters: like those in the series “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” on Nickelodeon or confronted by images from modern horror films at the theater. Monsters are uncontrollable creatures of the human imagination, inspiring fear through their gigantic stature; composition of repressed emotions within one’s self; and disregard for moral, social, and physiological structure
