The social context of LAN gaming
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 58-61).Playing video games at a Local Area Network (LAN) has become a complex social activity. Engaging with these games requires more than simply accomplishing the games’ objectives: it is also a process of socialisation within a community of gamers. Through my observation of players' activities at a Cape Town based LAN event, I begin to outline where, when and how social learning and sharing occurs at these events. I will show how playing games in a LAN setting can teach valuable interpersonal and social skills

Verification of C-detectability using Petri nets
Detectability describes the property of a system to uniquely determine, after a finite number of observations, the current and the subsequent states. In this paper, we extend detectability to C-detectability that only requires that a given set of crucial states can be distinguished from other states. We define four types of C-detectability in the framework of labeled Petri nets: strong C-detectability, weak C-detectability, periodically strong C-detectability, and periodically weak C-detectability. Moreover, we propose efficient approaches to verify such properties in the case of bounded labeled Petri net systems. The proposed approaches use the notion of basis marking and thus do not require an exhaustive enumeration of the reachability space
An evaluation of the performance of IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g wireless local area networks in a corporate office environment
In recent years there has been considerable interest in the development of standards for wireless local area networks. In particular, IEEE's 802.11a and 802.11g both employ coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (COFDM) but operate in different frequency bands. In this paper, the performance and relative merits of 802.11a and 802.11g are compared for the scenario of a corporate office wireless LAN application. It is shown that for comparable scenarios 802.11g achieves superior range but that 802.11a achieves higher data rates. Thus the two standards are found to have complimentary strengths and weaknesse
Particularities of security design for wireless networks in small and medium business (SMB)
Small businesses often have small budgets, which often means no fulltime IT staff or no possibility to hire a security consultant to set up a wireless LAN properly. This paper tries to develop a methodology for designing security for wireless networks in SMB. There are more security options to choose from, when setting up a wireless network, thus the security features needed for a company must be carefully taken in consideration. The benefits from one security feature must be balanced with the implementation and maintenance cost and with the risk of not getting the security level wanted.security, wireless, communication networks
Capítulo I: Esquematización Del Tema. --

IEEE 802.11n MAC frame aggregation mechanisms for next-generation high-throughput WLANs [Medium access control protocols for wireless LANs]
IEEE 802.11n is an ongoing next-generation wireless LAN standard that supports a very highspeed connection with more than 100 Mb/s data throughput measured at the medium access control layer. This article investigates the key MAC enhancements that help 802.11n achieve high throughput and high efficiency. A detailed description is given for various frame aggregation mechanisms proposed in the latest 802.11n draft standard. Our simulation results confirm that A-MSDU, A-MPDU, and a combination of these methods improve extensively the channel efficiency and data throughput. We analyze the performance of each frame aggregation scheme in distinct scenarios, and we conclude that overall, the two-level aggregation is the most efficacious
