    It is a well known fact that nowadays we are faced with not only large data sets that we need to process quickly, but with huge data streams (Domingos and Hulten, 2001). Special requirements are also placed by the fast growing sector of autonomous systems where systems that can re-train and adapt ‘on-fly’ are required (Patchett and Sastri, 2007). Similar requirements are enforced by the advanced process industries for self-developing and self-maintaining sensors (Qin et al., 1997). Now they even talk about self-learning industries (EC, 2007). All of these requirements cannot be met by using off-line methods and systems that can only adjust their parameters and/or are linear (Astroem and Wittenmark, 1989). These requirements call for a new type of systems that assumes the structure of non-linear, non-stationary systems to be adaptive and flexible. The author of this chapter started research work in this direction around the turn of the century (Angelov and Buswell, 2001; Angelov, 2002) and this research culminated in proposing with Dr. D. Filev the so called evolving Takagi-Sugeno (eTS) fuzzy system (Angelov and Filev, 2003). Since then a number of improvements of the original algorithm has been done, which require a systematic description in one publication. In this chapter an enhanced version of the eTS algorithm will be described which is called eTS+. It has been tested on a data stream from real engine test bench (data provided courtesy of Dr. E. Lughofer, Linz, Austria). The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed enhanced approach for modeling real data stream in precision, simplicity and interpretability, and computational resources used.     The performance of Bulgarian food markets during reform

    Food policy often depends on markets and markets depend on institutions. But how good do institutions have to be before reforms can be launched? Relying on well timed surveys of agricultural prices and a joint study by the Government of Bulgaria and the World Bank on agricultural market institutions, this paper presents evidence that performance in food markets improved following significant policy reforms in Bulgaria, although public institutions remained weak. This suggests that even though strong institutions are preferred to weak ones, it can be costly and impractical to delay policy reforms until work on strengthening institutions is finished. Still, measured performance varied by place and by commodity, suggesting that markets developed at different tempos and that the distribution of benefits from improved markets was uneven. This points to the need to address the costs of adjustment as policies change.     Identification of Evolving Rule-based Models.

    An approach to identification of evolving fuzzy rule-based (eR) models is proposed. eR models implement a method for the noniterative update of both the rule-base structure and parameters by incremental unsupervised learning. The rule-base evolves by adding more informative rules than those that previously formed the model. In addition, existing rules can be replaced with new rules based on ranking using the informative potential of the data. In this way, the rule-base structure is inherited and updated when new informative data become available, rather than being completely retrained. The adaptive nature of these evolving rule-based models, in combination with the highly transparent and compact form of fuzzy rules, makes them a promising candidate for modeling and control of complex processes, competitive to neural networks. The approach has been tested on a benchmark problem and on an air-conditioning component modeling application using data from an installation serving a real building.     Evolving Fuzzy Rule-based Classifiers from Data Streams

    A new approach to the online classification of streaming data is introduced in this paper. It is based on a self-developing (evolving) fuzzy-rule-based (FRB) classifier system of Takagi-Sugeno ( eTS) type. The proposed approach, called eClass (evolving class ifier), includes different architectures and online learning methods. The family of alternative architectures includes: 1) eClass0, with the classifier consequents representing class label and 2) the newly proposed method for regression over the features using a first-order eTS fuzzy classifier, eClass1. An important property of eClass is that it can start learning ldquofrom scratch.rdquo Not only do the fuzzy rules not need to be prespecified, but neither do the number of classes for eClass (the number may grow, with new class labels being added by the online learning process). In the event that an initial FRB exists, eClass can evolve/develop it further based on the newly arrived data. The proposed approach addresses the practical problems of the classification of streaming data (video, speech, sensory data generated from robotic, advanced industrial applications, financial and retail chain transactions, intruder detection, etc.). It has been successfully tested on a number of benchmark problems as well as on data from an intrusion detection data stream to produce a comparison with the established approaches. The results demonstrate that a flexible (with evolving structure) FRB classifier can be generated online from streaming data achieving high classification rates and using limited computational resources

    Supercapacitive microbial fuel cell: Characterization and analysis for improved charge storage/delivery performance

    AbstractSupercapacitive microbial fuel cells with various anode and cathode dimensions were investigated in order to determine the effect on cell capacitance and delivered power quality. The cathode size was shown to be the limiting component of the system in contrast to anode size. By doubling the cathode area, the peak power output was improved by roughly 120% for a 10ms pulse discharge and internal resistance of the cell was decreased by ∼47%. A model was constructed in order to predict the performance of a hypothetical cylindrical MFC design with larger relative cathode size. It was found that a small device based on conventional materials with a volume of approximately 21cm3 would be capable of delivering a peak power output of approximately 25mW at 70mA, corresponding to ∼1300Wm−3

    Deep convolutional neural networks for detection of rail surface defects

    In this paper, we propose a deep convolutional neural network solution to the analysis of image data for the detection of rail surface defects. The images are obtained from many hours of automated video recordings. This huge amount of data makes it impossible to manually inspect the images and detect rail surface defects. Therefore, automated detection of rail defects can help to save time and costs, and to ensure rail transportation safety. However, one major challenge is that the extraction of suitable features for detection of rail surface defects is a non-trivial and difficult task. Therefore, we propose to use convolutional neural networks as a viable technique for feature learning. Deep convolutional neural networks have recently been applied to a number of similar domains with success. We compare the results of different network architectures characterized by different sizes and activation functions. In this way, we explore the efficiency of the proposed deep convolutional neural network for detection and classification. В рамките на тази сатия ще се опитам да съположа главните черти, характеризиращи българското литературно поле след 1989 г. с най-новите тенденции от последните години (след 2005 г.), за да откроя онези прилики и разлики, които ни дават основание да говорим, от една страна, за единство на пост -комунизма - или периода на Втората българска република -, а от друга страна, за вътрешните му разграничения на отделни фази : краевековие (1990 - 2000 г.), междувековие (2000 - 2003/2004 г.) и начало на века (след 2004 г.). По-нататък ще става дума колкото за поезията като специфично поле за текстови практики, така и за цялата българска литература след 1 989 г., в която се помества поезията - доминираща в жанровите йерархии през 90-те години, леко отстъпваща в междувековната фаза и все по-категорично маргинализирана в първите години на XXI век за сметка на белетристиката и най- вече на различините романови форми.Bulgarian Literature after 1989 Orientation of the Debates, Biased Debates. The aim of this article is to put into perspective the main characteristics of Bulgarian literature o f the post- 1989 period and to emphasize the most recent leanings in order to be able to observe the similarities and differences between, on the one hand, the cohesion of the post-communist period (we call it 'the Second Republic' and on the other hand, the three sub-periods that we can detect within this large period : the end of an old era (from 1990 to 2000), the transition era (from 2000 to 2003/2004) and the dawn of a new era (after 2004). The author reflects both on poetry as a specific field of study and on literature as a whole after 1989. In the 1990s, poetry was the main genre, but progressively its importances fades away during the 'end of era' period and is more and more marginalized at the beginning of the 21st century, in favor of prose and particularly fiction.Dojnov Plamen, Vrinat-Nikolov Marie.
