David Nabors, Oral History

David Nabors was born in 1946 and grew up in Lake Creek, Texas. He shares his knowledge of the history of Delta County, Texas, including information about Cooper Lake, cotton farming, local businesses, and development of roads and electricity in rural areas.
Nabors married Sharon Smart in September 1965 and was drafted into the Navy a few days later. He reported for duty in January 1966. Nabors was trained in communication equipment repair but a bone tumor in his knee kept him from going to Vietnam. He attended East Texas State University on the G.I. Richard Huie was born to Gordon and Ida Gunter Huie in 1946. He shares his memories of downtown Cooper, Texas and the local businesses in the area. He also recalls his memories of the first Black owned businesses in the area.
Huie served as mayor of Cooper for eight consecutive years starting in 1985. He shared the city\u27s accomplishments during that time, including the construction of Cooper Lake and Big Creek Lake, the demolition of dilapidated buildings, and the construction of a new water treatment plant. Robert Wright was born in 1941 to Virginia Dawson and Delbert Wright. He grew up in Cedar Creek, Texas. He began his education in a single room school in Cedar Creek until it consolidated with a school in Cooper, Texas. In 1955 his family moved to Klondike, Texas and in 1959 he graduated from West Delta High School. Wright recalls changes in transportation, the industrialization of farming, and local businesses such as Chandler’s Store and Pollard Grocery Store. She met Billy Jack Silman while he was in barber school and the couple was married at the First Baptist Church in Clarksville. Clyde was born in 1924 to John Hardin and Mamie Blake Owen. Owen\u27s father was a disabled cotton farmer who used a wiggle tail riding cultivator to farm the land. He grew up in the Antioch Community of Delta County. He attended school in Antioch, Liberty Grove and Klondike. He discusses school athletics, visiting the Grand Saline Salt Mines, and the Klondike school explosion. Owen saw many changes in his lifetime, especially with regards to transportation, county roads, and electricity.
Owen served in the Army for forty-three years. He entered the 75th Regiment during the final years of WWII and served in the South Pacific. Owen was nearby when journalist Ernie Pyle was shot, and Owen attended the funeral.https://lair.etamu.edu/scua-oral-history-all/1010/thumbnail.jp
Ted Alley, Oral History

This interview focuses on Ted Alley’s life in Delta County, Texas, his service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and his career as a mortician operating the Delta Funeral Home.
Ted Alley was born to Wendell and Doris Lee Toon Alley on January 28, 1948. Alley recalls memories of attending schools in Delta County, Texas, including typing class and playing the knife game mumblety-peg.
In 1967, after his graduation from high school, Alley joined the Army. He went to Fort Polk, Louisiana for basic training and then to Fort Rucker, Alabama where he trained as a helicopter mechanic. Alley served in Vietnam for one year where he flew on a “smoke ship” helicopter. Years later, Alley reunited with the pilot and door gunner to visit the helicopter on display at a New York American Legion Post. When Alley returned home from Vietnam, he married Lyn Newman.
In 1970, following his discharge from the Army, Alley began attending East Texas State University. After Lyn’s father, owner of the Delta Funeral Home, passed away, Alley began working part time at the funeral home. He completed a program at the Dallas Institute of Funeral Services and eventually obtained his morticians license. This interview focuses on Morris Leeman White’s memories of growing up in Pecan Gap, Texas, his service in the Air Force, and his work at Polytechnic High School in Dallas, Texas.
Morris Leeman White was born in 1935 to Sarah Lecretia Leeman and Morris P. White. He grew up in Pecan Gap, Texas and recalls memories of the churches, schools, and businesses that supported the area. He attended East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce, and graduated with a teaching certificate. White joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Langley Air Force Base as a weapons specialist.
After his service in the Air Force, White used the G.I. Bill to finish three master’s degrees and part of a Ph.D. He worked at the Business Education Department at Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth, TX for thirty years.
