The paper focuses on the figure of Rodolphe Töpffer, a pioneer in the field of comics, and the reception of his work by Goethe's journal ‘Ueber Kunst und Alterthum’. Goethe took an interest in the figure and work of Töpffer, appreciating his wit; he read with curiosity his Doctoeur Festus, a comic strip story (litterature en stampes) with parodistic elements of Goethe's masterpiece. In his works, Töpffer uses an essential graphic line, theorised and explained in his "Essai de physiognomonie", to represent emotions and characters, thus reconnecting with the artistic traditions and physiognomic debates of the time

Within an Enlightenment model, travel literature focuses on the human being who is able to grasp the surrounding reality not only using more rational categories and the concept of utility, but also relying on a more varied perception and sensibility. The contribution aims to highlight the new perspective within the travel literature at the last decade of the 18th Century, exploring the reports that deal with Germany and its various territories, up to the "Reiseberichte" by Wackenroder, the best example of the transformation taking place in the sensibility that leads to perceive and represent the surrounding reality in a different way
