No full textL'interprétation de la loi thébaine, qui imposait à ceux qui voulaient accéder aux magistratures de se tenir pendant dix ans à l'écart de l'agora et des activités qui y avaient lieu, peut tirer profit de l'analyse d'une règle en vigueur à Sparte qui interdisait à quiconque n'avait pas encore trente ans de descendre dans l'agora. Sur la base de la comparaison entre des deux lois, cet article se propose de montrer que le statut des jeunes gens entre vingt et trente ans constituait le paradigme d'une condition civique caractérisée par l'interdiction d'accéder aux magistratures, et que l'aristocratie thébaine se servit de ce paradigme quand elle dut admettre parmi les citoyens de plein droit les nouveaux riches provenants des activités artisanales et commerciales, auxquels elle demandait, précisément, de s'abstenir pendant dix ans de l'agora

No full textThis paper examines the ritual ceremony by which the Agiad king Pleistoanax was recalled to Sparta, in 427 or 426 b.c., after a long exile. Thucydides observes that the king was welcomed back by the Spartans “with the same dances and sacrifices as
when they first enthroned their kings when Sparta was founded”. It is argued that the circles close to the Agiad king equated in this way the return of Pleistoanax to the most famous kathodos of Spartan history, namely, the return of the Herakleids

No full textDespite the many genealogical and chronological uncertainties regarding the Orthagorid tyranny at Sicyon it is generally assumed that the Delphic oracle which forecast a 100-year long rule by this family was an ex eventu prediction. This explains why such a length has never, or at least almost never, been doubted. Here this view is challenged by arguing (1) that the 100-year length implies a generational reckoning and, consequently, the prophecy was meant to refer to a three generation period; (2) that the tyranny lasted more than three generations, so that the oracle was not fulfilled and was not, therefore, ex eventu; and (3) that the attitude of later traditions, particularly the genealogical inconsistencies among different stories on the Orthagorids, reflects the effort to restore authority to the oracle by constructing genealogies in accordance with the 100-year prophecy

Città di “eguali” eppure fondata sulla selezione eugenetica dei “migliori”. Le rappresentazioni di Sparta nelle fonti antiche e nelle letture dei moderni sono innumerevoli, ma ne hanno restituito spesso un’immagine distorta.
L’impetuoso sviluppo degli studi spartani negli ultimi decenni fornisce oggi un quadro più equilibrato – ma anche più problematico – del mondo di Sparta. Intrecciando il racconto degli avvenimenti storico-politici con la descrizione della società e delle istituzioni cittadine, il libro offre una ricostruzione sintetica e aggiornata della storia di una città che ha avuto un peso notevole nell’immaginario occidentale
