The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei
This thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour

This article reviews the recent surgical treatment of patients with pleuropulmonary tuberculosis in the northern Taiwan area. With the afvent of effective chemotherapeutic agents and fewer failed medical treatment, need for surgery has decreased. Furing the period 1985 ro 1991, a total of 62 patients in the northern Taiwan area received surgical tretment for lesions or complications associated with pleuropulmonay tuberculosis. In the majority of cases, patients underwent operations for undiagnosed tumors. Other indications for surgery included tuberculosis cavity with aspergilloma, localized cavity or anatomic residue with a positive acid fast bacilli smear, complications with altered anatomy secondary to tuberculosis and chronic tuberculous empyema. The appropriate selection of patients for surgical intervention should ensure satisfactory surgical results. Surgery continues to play a vital role in the management of certain patients with pleuropulmonary tuberculosis.#1386

One patient was a 16-year-old boy with left chest wall hypoplasia and pneumothorax oil the right with right chest wall hypoplasia , hand e other was a 27-year-old man side. The brachydactyly, and pneumothorax, Pneumothorax in both patients vas treated with bullectomy and mechanical pleurodesis with the aid of videothoracoscopy, and the postoperative courses were smooth . Blood supply disruption has been hypothesized as a pathogenic mechanism of both spontaneous pneumothorax and Poland's syndrome, suggesting all association between these two diseases
On and Around Yan Song 嚴嵩 and His Son : Wang Shi-zhen 王世貞, Jin ping mei, etc.
Yan Song (1480-1567), the powerful prime minister of the Jiaqing 嘉靖 (1522-1566), has been portrayed as a villain in various historical and literary works ever since his downfall in 1562. It was Wang Shi-zhen (1529-1593), whose father's death was caused by Yan in a power struggle in the court, who contributed greatly to the creation of this negative portrait. Ming feng ji, a popular play criticizing Yan Song published shortly after his fall, was commonly attributed to Wang Shi-zhen. Starting in early Qing 清, Wang was also considered to be the author of Jin ping mei which according to some contemporary critics, was an expose of Yan's faction. Thus, in people's minds, satires of Yan Song were associated with Wang Shi-zhen. Moreover, although we cannot be certain about the authorship of Jin ping mei, we know that early manuscripts of the novel circulated among Wang Shi-zhen's friends. It seems almost certain that Wang had some connection with the novel

This novel mainly features its own personal critiques. Moreover, the thesis aims to shed light on the critiques between the texts of the novel. There are two dimensions worth noticing. One is laugh; the other is damn. Both of them embody the carnival of Bakhtin’s theory and possess the power of subversion and liberation. Critics, in fact, are a group of unofficial intellectuals illustrating the hilarious folk cultures between the texts in Luh Yay Seen Tsung, ranging form laughter, diet, excretion, discoronation, grotesque to filthy languages. The analysis of laughing theory and the culture of foul languages can reinforce another dimension of novels in Chin Dynasty.
Overall, the thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter one first interprets its motivation, meanings and the significant reviews of the study. It briefly reveals the analyses of the version and genre in Luh Yay Seen Tsung. Furthermore, it demonstrates the theories and methods employed in the thesis. Chapter two introduces the critics’ critiques that are irrelevant to novel texts, further probing into the similar life experiences and perspectives about the author and critics. Eventually, it respectively deals with critics’ world perspectives on the behalf of the middle and low class. Chapter three discusses the narrative theory of Master Chin Sheng-Tan, inclusive of the narrative manners. Chapter four revolves around the laugh in the critiques. In addition, Bakhtin’s carnival theories elaborate excretive literatures, dietary meanings, analyzing the representation of laughter in the critiques. Chapter five lays emphasis on the foul languages and irony, including humorous implications of grotesque body, excretive critiques and a great number of filthy languages. All this is characteristic of Luh Yay Seen Tsung. Chapter six is the conclusion, further establishing Luh Yay Seen Tsung as the historical meaning.[[note]]碩
