Thinking about development processes means trying to answer two crucial questions: why not the whole planet is developed and why, among the areas that have grown up, some have done so much ahead of others. These are issues that the economic historian, while collecting stimuli and stresses from the economy, can not give a unambiguous answer because they call into question many variables and their complex interaction. The "journey" within development therefore uses logical and non-chronological categories and enhances theories and norms linking History and Economics. For this reason, it was intended to provide the reader with a baggage that encompasses and holds together different perspectives (historical, political, social, institutional) that are considered necessary and useful for orienting themselves to a complex and never lending field of study to unilateral interpretations

The empress cities : urban centres, societies and economies in the age of Maria Theresia von Habsburg

The reader will be able to start a journey through the Empire, from the heart of the Continent to the Italian peninsula, Trieste and Mediterranean and the history of each city and urban system becomes the common thread of history of those areas, of the transformations they underwent and the relationship they had with the Empire. Urban phenomenon could indeed be the starting point for an analysis of the imperial policies and dynamics. The growth of cities and urban systems may be the cause of contradictions characterizing the mythical spaces we commonly call ‘Mitteleuropa’, where past and present have always been in conflict. In fact, the cities were not the passive result of the policies of the Vienna Court, but active protagonists of their own history. In this way, in the context of continue negotiations with the State, they had a profound impact on the imperial policies in the 18th century

Incendi e altre catastrofi urbane. Padova e Verona nelle fonti annalistiche, epigrafiche e letterarie di età presignorile

Padua and Verona – two cities comparable in size, geographical position and historico-political events – are compared in their urban making and breaking up in the preseignory time, as transmitted by literary, annalistic and epigraphic sources. Considering the two cities mainly from the point of view of fire catastrophes, a different cultural evaluation of fires is observed in the sources: true epoch divides and manifestations of divine will in Padua; just an inevitable consequence of an unceasing civil war, without any further meaning, in Verona. The same difference between the two approaches to the event of fire clearly appears in the way the annalistic sources of Padua and Verona present, from the opposite points of view, the very same events, produced by the direct military confrontation of the two cities along the border of their respective territories during the first ezzelinian age, i.e. the fires of Vicenza in 1236 and of Montagnana in 1242. In turn, this leads to reconsidering the origins and cultural identity of the author of the Chronicon Marchiae Tarvisinae et Lombardiae, which since the 16th century used to be labelled as the work of an anonymous ‘Paduan monk’, but in 1916 was rather attributed to a Veronese or somebody living in Verona between 1289 and 1293
