Characteristics of the Jinwuwei and Its Relationship to the Xingjun System

No full text
This article analyzes the relationship between the Jinwuwei 金吾衛, which was one of the twelve central guards (Shierwei 十二衛), and the system of the army in the field (Xingjun 行軍), through an examination of Tang period tactical manuals, like Taibaiyin-jing 太白陰経, and the statutes concerning the duties of Jinwuwei contained in Tongdian (通典).The research to date argues that since the main duty of the Jinwuwei was to patrol the capital palace, it was more a security police force than an army regiment. This notion is based on Tangliudian 唐六典, by and large an explanation of various Tang institutions. However, according to Tongdian, the majority of the statutes concerning the duties of Jinwuwei was derived from the Xingjun system as described in the Tang tactical manuals.During the Beizhao 北朝 and Sui-Tang periods, whenever an army in the field was organized, a unit called yuhoujun 虞候軍 was usually formed within it to take charge of reconnaissance and sentry duties during military operations, the same duties entrusted to the Jinwuwei. In other words, the main purpose of the Jinwuwei was to guard the Emperor like a yuhoujun unit, whenever he journeyed away from the capital. The author concludes that the Jinwuwei should be considered essentially a yuhoujun unit within the Shierwei, the army in the field (Xingjun) under the direct command of the Emperor.journal articl

Purpose: This study aims to investigate and compare celebrity and ordinary users' behaviors on Sina Weibo. Design/methodology/approach: Data was collected from 12,555 ordinary users and 2,467 celebrity users on Sina Weibo. Correlation and regression analysis was performed on users' number of followings, number of followers and number of posts. Findings: The results revealed significant difference between famous and ordinary users' behaviors on Sina Weibo. We found correlation among ordinary users' number of followings, number of followers and number of posts, but for celebrity users, only their number of followings and number of posts are related with each other. For both ordinary and celebrity users, their number of followings significantly affects how many posts they publish. Research limitations: We only carried out our investigation on Sina Weibo and the findings need to be further verified on other microblogging platforms. Practical implications: This research is useful for microblogging service providers to understand different types of users and promote the continuous use of their services. Originality/value: This research delivers valuable insights into understanding of the characteristics of different types of microbloggers and the ways to increase user viscosity.Purpose: This study aims to investigate and compare celebrity and ordinary users' behaviors on Sina Weibo. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) technologies in China have made rapid progress in the past decade. In this paper, recent advances and future prospective of PICs in China are introduced and discussed, respectively. More than nine major projects in the field of PICs have been issued. Various material platforms and technologies have been developed to realize photonic integrated devices for many applications focusing on broadband communication, such as optical and wireless network, optical interconnects, and optical coherent communication. Many research achievements and breakthrough have been made under the support of these projects, such as silicon photonics transceiver, InP- based transceiver, and optical and microwave signal processing chips. It can be expected that the PICs technology will be continuously supported in the next five years, since it has been considered as one of the key enabling technologies for supporting several national major assignments and strategies, such as broadband communication, supercomputing and datacenter.National Natural Science Foundation of China [61321063, 61090390, 61522509, 61535012]; National High-Tech Research and Development Program of China [2011AA010303, 2011AA010305]; Thousand Young Talent ProgramSCI(E)[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]

No full text
Compact and smart optical gas sensors have attracted significant attention over the past few decades. Among the materials used for developing such gas sensors, group-IV materials, including silicon, germanium, carbon allotropes, and their compounds, are considered the most promising candidates. By virtue of their inherent compatibility with the CMOS fabrication process in the mature microelectronics industry, on-chip optical gas sensors based on group-IV materials have merits of appreciable sensitivity and high-density integration. Moreover, such sensors have promising potential to be integrated with other electronic or photonic devices for on-chip signal processing and communication, which are expected to enable versatile applications in the internet of things, point-of-care testing, and information and communication technology. This paper is the review of basic principles, state-of-the-art devices, and cutting-edge applications of on-chip optical gas sensors based on group-IV materials and discussions of their prospects

Tuning Edge States in Strained-Layer InAs/GaInSb Quantum Spin Hall Insulators

No full text
We report on a class of quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHIs) in strained-layer InAs/GaInSb quantum wells, in which the bulk gaps are enhanced up to fivefold as compared to the binary InAs/GaSb QSHI. Remarkably, with consequently increasing edge velocity, the edge conductance at zero and applied magnetic fields manifests time reversal symmetry-protected properties consistent with the Z(2) topological insulator. The InAs/GaInSb bilayers offer a much sought-after platform for future studies and applications of the QSHI.NSF [DMR-1508644]; Welch Foundation [C-1682]; National Basic Research Program of China (NBRPC) [2014CB920901]; NSFC [11434010]; NBRPC [2015CB921503]; RCQM, Rice UniversitySCI(E)ARTICLE511

Results of distinct modes of loading procedures in the nonlinear inelastic behaviour of solids

No full text
The consequences of distinct modes of loading procedures on the mechanical behaviour of elasto/viscoplastic materials are analyzed in the present work. An associated formulation of the evolutive laws is adopted based on the existence of a non-negative convex closed function representing the dissipative mechanisms. Distinct modes of loading modalities are suitably taken into account by considering different loading application rates and the intrinsic properties of the material. An adequate integration scheme is adopted and the effectiveness of the procedure is shown by analyzing specific computational applications with different loading programs. Numerical examples and results are also illustrated in order to show the significance of different loading procedures and different loading rates on the nonlinear behaviour of inelastic materials

Growth and Characterisation of Boron Rich Nanomaterials

No full text
In this study nanomaterials are grown in a solid state reaction at 1300C of boron, barium oxide and iron(II/III)oxide powders in an argon atmosphere. The nanomaterials are shown to be grown via vapour based method by growing the nanomaterials on a separate silicon wafer that has been sputtered with iron and placed downstream of the powders in the flow of argon. An area of the silicon wafer is kept free of iron by using a mask when sputtering the wafer. When nanomaterials are grown, the masked area remains free of nanomaterials. This shows that the presence of iron is vital for the nucleation of the nanomaterials and also indicates the possibility of growing these nanomaterials on targeted sites. The nanomaterials produced are examined and it is found that we have a presence of amorphous, crystalline and multiple twinned nanowires. The evidence collected suggests that 70% of the nanowires are twinned. The single crystal nanowires can be identified as boron carbide by comparing to diffraction pattern simulations of a boron carbide unit cell. The twinned diffraction pattern is shown to be due to different segments of the nanowire being in different diffraction condition by using Dark Field imaging. The Twinned wires are also shown to have at least four segments in a cyclic [001] twinning orientation in simultaneous diffraction condition by comparing to a twinned structure constructed from simulations. Elemental analysis using Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray shows that the composition of the nanomaterials is mainly boron and carbon. The role of the iron layer on the wafer is investigated to see how varying the thickness will affect the nanomaterials grown. It is successfully shown that an increase in the thickness of the iron layer results in a greater density of nanomaterials. However there is no great variation in the average diameter of the nanomaterials produced. The absence of a visible signal for iron in the Elemental analysis of nanostructure covered silicon wafer shows that the amount of iron in the sample has decreased during the reaction. However iron is found in small amounts in droplet structures at the tips of nanomaterials this is different to work done on a similar system at 1100C. This suggests that the role of the iron in the growth of these nanomaterials at this temperature is not yet understood. However this work has confirmed that the iron is essential for the nucleation of the nanomaterials, but post nucleation growth that was previously assumed to be a conventional VLS growth may switch to an oxide assisted growth mode
