Periferie, oltre la città prevedibile I luoghi marginali in cui si abilita l'intelligenza sociale

    No full text

Common stock as innovation enabling platforms

    No full text
The huge wealth of properties that we have built in many years in our cities and peripheries, convinced that it was capable of generating value, today is largely degraded, underused or disused but it represents a stock of heritage that could be fundamental to feed a dynamic and flexible view of legacy capable to influence our design culture. The challenge presented is how to shift the development asset from real estate capitalization to a knowledge economy where disused assets are offered as common stocks and enabling platforms for collective actions

Common Stocks. Urban peripheries, social innovation and urban regeneration

The peripheries have been considered over the years as a crucial policy challenge that has oriented policies and strategies at different levels of government. On the other hand, measures that stimulate local contexts to develop specific policies have assumed an extremely episodic and unpredictable character in which the public debate on urban regeneration has remained largely dominated by that of extraordinary and emergency intervention on the peripheries. The paper analyses the case study of transformation of the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in Palermo with the new Cre.Zi Plus platform transforming a neglected and abandoned building in a peripheral area by delivering services to the community. Bottom up processes are a resource, but it is also necessary to go beyond "self-defense" operations, avoiding the risk of continuing to relegate the role of the urban project and policies to a mere application of standards and indicators. Starting from the diversity and richness of the individual stories of social innovation and urban regeneration in the peripheries, it is necessary to build overall visions capable of overcoming the fragmentation of the initiatives and of constructing a framework from which to guide processes, recognize, enable and involve the subjects that bring innovation

Branding as a lever for resilient transformation

The branding impulse can catalyse tourism and community’s resilience promoting the reactivation of small towns through targeted transformations of built heritage and unused building stock, social innovation initiatives, and new forms of production. It can create a more adaptive process and opportunities for networks of small villages in inner areas where tourism can merge with different work/life models. The B4R work in Sicani hills in Sicily offers a framework for the region’s development and manages to describe a path for activate “reserves of resilience” for new sustainable lifestyles. The settlement development options that the study displays can be used as a model for similar considerations in comparable regions of Europe

"Periferie di città" Da patologia a riserve di progettualità

Since some years, on national and international level, the renewal of marginal neighbourhoods estate plays a central role in the definition of innovative approaches to urban integrated design and urban regeneration processes. The periphery have represented for many years “the dark side of cities” and in many cases it still shapes like it. But these spaces make up very often a heritage which is invested with an important cultural reference role - positive or negative -linked to both the local building and project-making tradition, and to everyday life bound to the physical and social characterization of these settlements. This arrangement calls for renovated instruments able to read these spaces in order to define the modes of a project dealing with the role these spaces can play within the wider urban scenario they give form to. In the light of these considerations appear more and more urgent to associate to local policies an increasing attention to system dynamics, a structural approach closely connected to the dynamic that influence the city and the territory not only a part of theme. Some first investigation outcomes will be introduced

Processes of territorialization are the result of an intricate blend of material and sym- bolic elements, and the narratives constructed around places contribute to defining their communal significance while reshaping development policies that pertain to them. Thus, narratives about inland areas must avoid the risk of re-signification, to which they are often subject, based on a rhetorical notion of "charming" isolation that finds in tourist appeal an easy escape from developmental challenges. To shift the focus on inland and marginal territories away from an approach that con- siders only their touristic appeal—and instead to contribute to the creation of inno- vative models for the development of areas where residing becomes desirable—it is essential to focus on how perceptions are shaped by the narratives associated with these places. This calls for a research approach that is sensitive to spatial dynamics, emotional landscapes, and the social networks embedded within them. This paper presents the action-research experience conducted in an inland Sicilian area, Santo Stefano Quisquina in the Sicanian region, aimed at the co-construction of the "Atlas of Stories and Places," a digital platform for the community’s self-narration. Developed through the direct involvement of local residents, this project employed social mapping as a method to foster collective reflection on people's relationship with their territory

NETWORK AS SPACE OF OPPORTUNITIES IN THE SICANI AREA IN SICILY (ITALY)

Starting from the renewed interest in marginal territories that has emerged in the scientific debate and in the field of territorial policies, the contribution explores the Sicani Area in Sicily (Italy), as a paradigmatic case of marginality and as a hybrid context that needs to increase awareness of its own hidden qualities and to develop territorial branding strategies. Departing from the framework of the B4R Branding4Resilience research project of national interest the aim of the University of Palermo research is to define the requirement for a more inclusive settlement model in the Sicani Area to re-balance existing asymmetries by recharging peripheral areas with new centrality. The paper discusses case study analyses and first results of the co-visioning phase of the research project: a process of strategic spatial visioning to recompose in a coherent territorial vision the system of relationships in place, identifying a branding strategy and increasing the community’s transformative capacity. The work in Sicani territory in Sicily offers a framework for the region’s development to develop relational models that can open up design-driven knowledge production for broader spatial strategies that support administrations in formulating development policies
