Thermometamorphism in the Campiglia Marittima aureole (Southern Tuscany, Italy)
Contact metamorphism of carbonate rocks surrounding the Campiglia Marittima granite (southern Tuscany, Italy) has been investigated. The study was performed mainly on rock samples collected from a borehole which reached the magmatic body about 220 m below the surface. The calcite-dolomite geothertmometer was used to estimate metamorphic temperatures. Although carbonates appear largely re-equilibrated during the late stages of metamorphism, the distribution of temperatures and parageneses indicates that the rocks of the aureole were affected by at least two main, distinct metamorphic events. Moving from the outer zones to the contact with the magmatic body, the first and more intense metamorphic event is characterized by formation of the mineral succession tremolite-diopside-forsterite, and temperatures ranging from 430 to 550 °C. The second event appears to have occurred at lower and more uniform temperatures (about 350 °C) and is characterized by the occurrence of a widespread Tlc ± Qtz ± Srpt ± Cal mineral assemblage, generally filling veins and cracks. Distributions of temperatures and parageneses, as well as available geological data on the Campiglia Marittima intrusion, suggest a prevalently conductive heat transfer for the first event, and a prevalently convective heat transfer for the secon
