Development and validation of a numerical model of a rotary steam engine for electric power micro generation using biomass
The use of fossil combustibles leads to the generation of large quantities of carbon dioxide. Though its effects on the environment are not fully explained, it is quite an highlighted fact that an alternative way to fossil fuels for heat and energy production has to be found.
This paper presents a numerical model used for modeling a rotative steam engine to be employed to use the steam produced by a proper biomass boiler. This engine is based on the Wankel kinematic scheme and is developed using the one dimensional code AMESim. A proper numerical model was set up in order to take into account the volume and torque variation in function of the angular displacement of the rotor.
A prototipe is also presented; this was built in the Energetica Department Laboratories modifying a commercial Wankel. This prototipe was tested at the engine test bench using compressed air at several inlet pressures and rotating speeds.
The results of the experimental tests were then compared with the numerical ones in terms of delivered power, air consumption and ratio between inlet and outlet temperatures

Viene presentata una breve descrizione del ruolo e dell'importanza delle tecniche di diagnostica dei sistemi turbogas come strumenti indispensabili nella gestione e manutenzione di apparati di turbine a gas per uso aeronautico-propulsivo e per produzione di energia meccanica su grande e piccola scala.
La manutenzione di tipo predittivo richiede la messa a punto di strumenti di diagnosi in grado di monitorare costantemente la macchina, e di strumenti di prognosi che consentano di elaborare futuri scenari a partire da quelli individuati dai sistemi di diagnostica.
I principali tipi di sistemi diagnostici basati sull'analisi di performance sono analizzati brevemente nel seguito, soffermandosi con particolare attenzione alle cosiddette tecniche di Intelligenza Artificiale (AI)
Steam expander as a throttling valve replacement in industrial plants: A techno-economic feasibility analysis
This study analyses the replacement of a pressure reduction valve with an expander in those industrial plants that use the steam as a heat transfer fluid at different pressure levels. This replacement can be an effective technique to recover some mechanical energy as the pressure reduction is commonly performed by a throttling valve and thus the pressure work is wasted. Conceptually, it is possible to recover this energy through an expander that converts it in mechanical or electric energy. The substitution of throttling valves in those plants which use steam as heat medium is often not a way to reduce the total consumption of the plant, as the thermal energy is actually extracted from the system and converted with relatively low efficiency. Nonetheless, the economic advantage of such application can be relevant, since thermal and electric energy are commonly priced differently. Therefore, this last application is gaining interest in the industrial world but still it is not thoroughly investigated. This study helps to fill this gap by analysing the replacement of the throttling valve from the thermodynamic and economic point of view. The results showed that the introduction of an expander could lead to substantial economic revenues and that in many of the investigated scenarios the discounted payback time is lower than four years. The economic analysis is carried out for several combination of expander purchasing and installation cost and for several combinations thermal and electric energy prices, to account for most of the economic and operational differences that could characterize the investigated application in the practice
