From chiffre d’affaires to turnover and from revenue to produits: An LSP approach to financial translation.
No full textIn the field of specialized practices of translation, business and economic translation in general and financial translation in particular have been neglected by academic research in translation studies so far, regardless of their economic value. Drawing on a previous investigation of the French terminology of consolidated statements of profit or loss in the age of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) (Leibbrand 2018), this paper suggests an LSP approach to financial translation.
Conceptually, it draws on a business communication and specialized discourse approach with a focus on financial communication and on knowledge management in specialized translation. The paper focuses on a highly specialized genre and deals with language variation in the terminology of consolidated financial statements in English and French. Based on the analysis of the terminology used by listed companies in different French-speaking countries and the investigation on how IFRS have been applied at a linguistic level (Leibbrand 2018), the English and French terminology used by these companies has been analyzed and compared. Furthermore, the investigation considered the translational nature of the bilingual financial terminology.
The results describe the variation within English and French terminology of consolidated statements of profit or loss. Moreover, they illustrate bilingual functional equivalence and translational variation. They reveal terminological practices as well as practices of translation and accounting by delivering language data from authentic contexts of professional usage in financia reporting and communication

No full textThe doctoral thesis Verstehen verstehen: Modellierung epistemologischer und methodologischer Grundlagen für die Konferenzdolmetschforschung ausgehend vom Simultandolmetschen in die B-Sprache (Modelling Comprehension in Interpreting Studies: Epistemological and Methodological Foundations for Research on Conference Interpreting; with an Initial Concentration on Simultaneous Interpreting into the B-Language) (Leibbrand 2009a/ 2011a) is situated thematically in the discipline of Interpreting Studies (Pöchhacker 2004). After briefly outlining the issues treated in my doctoral thesis, this essay tries to show what contribution the approach called “Hermeneutical Research into Interpreting” (Hermeneutische Dolmetschforschung) can make to the new field of Translational Hermeneutics. In addition, the essay demonstrates how this approach can fecundate the discussion concerning Hermeneutics and Cognitive Science on the one hand and, on the other hand, provide insights into the question concerning whether or not Hermeneutics and Empirical Research are conflicting paradigms. For Hermeneutische Dolmetschforschung, Translational Hermeneutics should not restrict its research to understanding in translation per se; rather it must go beyond this and also explore how understanding itself can serve as a research method and as the foundation for an epistemological attitude. The power and productivity of Hermeneutics for building a paradigm in Translation Studies is not limited to observing and explaining the processes and products of translation. Neither is it limited to contributing to the discussion of methods adopted by the translator/interpreter in translating or interpreting. The question of method includes the questioning individual who is actively and hermeneutically reflecting on his/her own research activities. The new methodology resulting from my investigations is called Verstehende Forschung and it is grounded on the epistemological attitude of Epistemologische Offenheit. This methodological approach is qualitative, not quantitative. Hermeneutical Research into Interpreting defines the process of understanding while interpreting (comprehension) as Produktionsorientiertes dynamisches Verstehen. However, the core of this new approach is built by the methodological dimension of Hermeneutics. Therefore, a contribution geared towards solving the LAP-versus-ESP-controversy in Translation Studies lies at the very heart of Hermeneutical Research into Interpreting

Und welche Rolle spielt die Hermeneutik? Das Verstehen beim Simultandolmetschen in die B-Sprache bildet den Ausgangspunkt, und es fragt sich, wie dieses zu messen ist. Mit dem vorliegenden Buch wird erstmalig in der Dolmetschforschung ein eigenständiger epistemologischer Ansatz entwickelt, der vom Dolmetschen selbst ausgeht. Im dargestellten Forschungsprozeß emergiert eine Alternative zur experimentellen Konferenzdolmetschforschung. No full textThis paper investigates Schleiermacher’s 1813 lecture on translation from the perspective of interpreting. I first analyse the essay’s reception within translation studies with regard to interpreting, then go on to show the topicality of Schleiermacher’s reference to interpreting, using an approach called Foundations of Hermeneutical Research on Interpreting. Two centuries after Schleiermacher’s claim that the less sophisticated interpreting belongs to business while translating belongs to scholarship and art, we witness the advent of a new approach in translation theory which takes interpreting as its point of departure. This approach ties in with, amongst others, the hermeneutical tradition in the German-speaking Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschwissenschaft. Indeed, it is in considering Schleiermacher’s statements on interpreting that Vermeer pointed to Schleiermacher’s dialectic. And the integration of Schleiermacher’s dialectic into the discourse on the mechanical task of interpreting opens up avenues for further research, particularly in terms of action and abduction in translation

The French Terminology of Consolidated Statements of Profit or Loss: A Status Quo.
No full textThis paper deals with language variation in the terminology of consolidated financial statements in French. It analyzes the terminology used by listed companies in different French-speaking countries. The paper investigates how the International Financial Reporting Standards developed by the International Accounting Standards Board have been applied at a linguistic level.
For this purpose, a small, specialized corpus of consolidated statements of profit or loss from companies in Belgium, Canada, France, Morocco and Switzerland has been built. The analysis pertains to a variety of aspects relevant to translation pedagogy and practice: terminology, language variation, and business, in particular financial, communication.
The results reveal terminological practices in accounting language data from authentic contexts of usage. As such, they help bridge the gap between the profession and academia in translator training. At the same time, they show that the level of harmonization and standardization in the language of accounting is lower than might be expected

No full textDer vorliegende Beitrag hat den Vortrag, der auf der LICTRA 2010 gehalten wurde, zur Grundlage. Dieser hatte zum Ziel, das am Zentrum für Translationswissenschaft der Universität Wien bei Franz Pöchhacker durchgeführte Dissertationsprojekt mit dem Titel "Verstehen verstehen: Modellierung epistemologischer und methodologischer Grundlagen für die Konferenzdolmetschforschung ausgehend vom Simultandolmetschen in die B-Sprache" vorzustellen. Bei der Festlegung des Vortragstitels wurde tagesaktuell die Aussendung des EST-Newsletters vom Mai 2010 ausschlaggebend: Dort war von der Planung eines Panels mit dem Titel "Hermeneutics as a Research Paradigm" auf dem nächsten, dem sechsten, EST-Kongreß in Leuven Ende September 2010, die Rede.
Die Fragestellung des Forschungsprojektes lautete: Wie soll das Verstehen beim Simultandolmetschen (SI) in die B-Sprache gemessen/ untersucht werden?
Im folgenden wird zunächst von den Prämissen des Forschungsprojektes die Rede sein, bevor die Ergebnisse des Projektes präsentiert werden. Dann sollen Methode und Methodologie, die zu diesen Ergebnissen führten, in den Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung rücken. Schließlich werden die Anwendungsbereiche des erarbeiteten Modells aufgezeigt und die Ergebnisse einer Reflexion unterzogen. Ein Ausblick auf die oben erwähnte Themenstellung beim EST-Kongreß bildet den Abschluß der vorliegenden Ausführungen und soll eine der möglichen Grundlagen für die Diskussion des hier vorgestellten Ansatzes bieten
