The interviewee is my father, we did the interview in a quite corner at home. My father is a traditional person. He talks very little in usual time. So I don\u27t know much of him before. After the interview, I can know him much more than before. In this interview, my father told me a lot of things about his childhood. The most interesting thing is that his elder sister was given to other because the family has no ability to foster her. It is unbelievable. Then, the thing that threatens my father most is the coming of typhoon. My father lived in a two-story wooden hut; it was so simple and weak. When the typhoon signal was hanged. All the family members could not sleep over night because they were afraid of the hut will be destroyed by the strong wind. If the hut was really destroyed when they were sleeping, they may all die in dream. So my dad still has a clear impression of that terrible scene. In my father childhood, he had not much entertainment because he had no money to spend on it. He likes making some toys for himself like flying kits and collecting insects. Most of his time was spent on doing housework and caring his little sister and little brother. He will be punished by his dad and mum if he cannot finish the housework

Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of physical exercise and melatonin supplement on treating sleep disturbance in children with autism spectrum disorders

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Previous study showed that both melatonin supplement and physical exercise intervention could improve sleep quality in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) with the increase in endogenous melatonin level. However, none of the studies have directly compared the effectiveness between the two interventions on treating sleep disturbance in children with ASD. Without direct comparison, we do not know which intervention is better. Thus, we designed a study to compare which intervention is more effective to treat sleep disturbance in children with ASD and to examine whether the combination of the two could be the most efficacious. We present a protocol for conducting a randomized controlled trial to compare the effectiveness of physical exercise and melatonin supplement on treating sleep disturbance in children with ASD. STUDY DESIGN: The proposed study will be a four-group randomised control trial (RCT) design, with equal allocation of participants to the three intervention groups and one control group. METHODS: All eligible participants will be randomly allocated to a morning jogging group, a melatonin supplement group, a combination group and a control group. Changes in sleep quality will be monitored through actigraphic assessment and parental sleep logs. Melatonin levels represented by 6-sulfoxymelatonin will be measured from the participants’ 24-h and the first morning void urinary samples. All the assessments will be carried out before the intervention (T1), in the mid of the study (5 weeks after the commencement of the study) (T2) and after the 10-week intervention (T3). Level of statistical significance will be set at 5% (i.e. p < .05). The results of this trial will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journal. FINDINGS: The findings will provide evidence to determine whether physical exercise or melatonin supplement or the combination of interventions is the most effective to treat sleep disturbance in children with ASD

Conservation genomics of endangered turtles : the Big-headed Turtle and the Beale\u27s Eyed Turtle

    No full text
Turtles are one of the most threatened animal groups in the world, with 51.3% of the turtle species categorized as globally threatened (critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable) on the IUCN Red List. Overexploitation for the food and pet trade is the main threat, especially for turtles in Asia. In Hong Kong, all five native freshwater turtles are listed as endangered species locally. This study will focus on two species, the Big-headed Turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) and Beale’s Eyed Turtle (Sacalia bealei). Some of the world’s remaining wild populations of P. megacephalum and S. bealei are in Hong Kong. With relatively healthy populations in Hong Kong, we have a unique opportunity to perform population genomics studies of these species to understand their evolutionary history and guide conservation. In this study, I provide insight into the population genomics of two endangered freshwater turtles by using double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq). ddRADseq is a powerful genomic method that obtains tens of thousands of SNPs randomly across the genome, providing high resolution population genomic data. With these data, I aim to contribute to turtle conservation by developing evidence-based conservation recommendations, especially genetically guiding captive breeding programmes and reintroduction of individuals from wildlife seizures. In Chapter 1, I provide a general introduction to turtles of the world, conservation status and threats in Asia. I also briefly introduce the turtle species of Hong Kong, provide review of conservation genomic of turtles, and introduce the ddRADseq method. In Chapter 2, I examine the population structure of S. bealei from Fujian Province and Hong Kong, and infer the origin of the individuals from an ex situ breeding colony. In Chapter 3, I examine the population structure of the P. megacephalum from Myanmar and southeastern China, and infer the origin of a reintroduced population in Hong Kong. In Chapter 4, I summarise the major findings of each chapter and suggest applications to conservation the two study species

    My Year Abroad

Tiller is an average American college student with a good heart but minimal aspirations. Pong Lou is a larger-than-life, wildly creative Chinese American entrepreneur who sees something intriguing in Tiller beyond his bored exterior and takes him under his wing. When Pong brings him along on a boisterous trip across Asia, Tiller is catapulted from ordinary young man to talented protégé, and pulled into a series of ever more extreme and eye-opening experiences that transform his view of the world, of Pong, and of himself. In the breathtaking, “precise, elliptical prose” that Chang-rae Lee is known for (The New York Times), the narrative alternates between Tiller’s outlandish, mind-boggling year with Pong and the strange, riveting, emotionally complex domestic life that follows it, as Tiller processes what happened to him abroad and what it means for his future. Rich with commentary on Western attitudes, Eastern stereotypes, capitalism, global trade, mental health, parenthood, mentorship, and more, My Year Abroad is also an exploration of the surprising effects of cultural immersion—on a young American in Asia, on a Chinese man in America, and on an unlikely couple hiding out in the suburbs. Tinged at once with humor and darkness, electric with its accumulating surprises and suspense, My Year Abroad is a novel that only Chang-rae Lee could have written, and one that will be read and discussed for years to come.https://corescholar.libraries.wright.edu/dlpp_all/1792/thumbnail.jp

A portrayal of Joseph in Genesis : the problematic nature of his claims to knowing God's intentions.

The ambiguity of Joseph's image is due mainly to readers' different (or even contradictory) evaluations of his actions. This thesis attempts to provide a portrayal of this character by scrutinising his speeches in order to expose the problematic nature of his claims to knowing God's intentions. Judah is forced by Joseph's test to choose slavery for the sake of his father's survival (44.33-34); the ironic reversal of his role as a victimiser to becoming a victim of his rationale to sell Joseph in order to save him (37.26-27) is unmistakable. Unwittingly, Joseph mistakes the rationale for a divine principle to explain his suffering and dreams of domination and subordination for the same purpose of survival (45.5-11). To complicate the matter further, his repeated pronouncements of the God-sent famine (45.25,28,32) portray God as the source of destruction and deliverance, the same role Judah played in his betrayal. His final declaration of divine good overriding human evil (50.20), intended to draw a radical distinction between God's intentions and those of his brothers, would make it harder for him to explain the remarkable similarity between God's actions and those of Judah. However, he is unaware of the anomaly his speeches yield due to his ignorance of Judah's excuse. This double blindness calls into doubt any certainty about the coalescence of perspectives of Joseph and the narrator. It is also Joseph's assertion of domination over Egypt (45.8-9) instead of over his brothers that exposes its link with his subsequent policy of enslavement of a whole nation (47.13-26). However benevolent his measures are, his ambiguous behaviour clearly derives from his belief in his right to subjugate others in order to save them. It is undoubtedly an ironic and tragic ending that the protagonist would repeat the enslavement (which he has suffered, abhorred and condemned as evil) on such a grand scale

The article deals with the formation process of modern historiography ofliberal populism in the 1870-1890s and analyzes historian V.I. Kharlamov’scontributionto the study of kulturnichestvo of populist reformers. The author considers the main provisions of the concept of "liberal" populism proposed by Kharlamov, traces its evolution in the context of domestic populism studies in the 1980s - the first half of the 1990s, establishes the influence of his work on the authors of the first monographs in the mid-1990s devoted to the history of the right-wing populism. Particular attention is paid to the development of Kharlamov’s first evidence-based periodization of the history of liberal populism, the conceptual apparatus ("liberal" and "legal" populism, "kulturnichestvo of populism")proposed by him, as well as his analysis of the views of the leading theorists of the right populism headed by I.I. Kablits-Yuzov. The author concludes that Kharlamov’sattempts to study the process of the birth and evolution of the liberal trend of populism, based on the peculiarities of its ideologists’ worldview, had a considerable influence on the formation of the modern approach to the study of the history of the right-wing populism

English literature on the Ottoman Turks in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries

    No full text
In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century a large and complex English literature on the Ottoman Turks developed, characterised by its diversity in form, content, opinion and context. This was a literature in the sense of a large body of texts sharing a topic, written in a similar time and place and in similar context, but also in the sense of a discourse, sharing literary conventions, citing similar sources, recycling information, accepted ‘facts’, anecdotes and images and drawing upon the same authorities. I examine this literature from its sixteenth-century roots, tracing its growth at the turn of the seventeenth century and its development into a complex literature, influenced by English religious and political contexts as well as growing Anglo-Ottoman trade and diplomacy, until the dramatic changes brought by diminishing Ottoman power in Europe at the close of that century. I draw these sources together as a ‘literature’, by examining trends, chronological developments and connections between them, while on the other hand I focus upon the contexts of individual works and a nuanced reading of their representations of the Ottomans. Through this I seek to bring a broader and more balanced perspective on both English literature on the Ottomans as a whole and the diversity and complexity of the works of which it was comprised
