voiceCollected by Jimmie Morris Mary Celestia Parler; Timbo, Ark. Transcribed by November 5, 1954 Neil Byer Reel 214, Item 4 Rossen LeBeau ("This is Rossen LeBeau. A lot of fellows play this over the radio, and they'll call it 'rozin the bow'. But it's a man's name— Rossen, r-o-s-s-e-n, LeBeau, l-e b-e-a-u. So here we go with old Rossen LeBeau.") Oh, when I was young and handsome, The girls they all called me their beau, But now I am old and ugly, They call me old Rossen LeBeau. Chorus: They call me old Rossen LeBeau, They call me old Rossen LeBeau, And now that I'm old and ugly, They call me old Rossen LeBeau. I've live for the good of my country, Though my boys are all short, you all know, But I hope in the next generation, They'll be tall like old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) I've traveled this country all over, And now to another I'll go, For I know that good friends there are waiting, To welcome old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) In a gay round of pleasure I've traveled, Nor will I leave behind any foe, And when my companions are jolly, They'll drink to old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) My life has now drawn to its closing, And all will at last be just so, So we'll drink a full tumbler at parting, To the name of old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) Reel 214, Item 4 , con't. When I'm dead and laid out in my coffin, And the people all come to the show, Pour sassafras tea dnd c o m whiskey All over old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) I'll have to be buried, I reckon, And the ladies all come to the show, They'll raise up the lid of my coffin, And say, "There's old Rossen LeBeau." (Chorus) And when to my grave I am going, The children will all want to know, They'll run To the doors and the winders, And cry, "There's old Rossen LeBeau." (Chorus) Then pick me out six trusty fellows, And let them all stand in a row, Just dig a big hole in a circle, And toss in old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) Then shake me out two slabs of cypress, Place one at my head and my toe, And do not forget to scratch on them The name of old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) And then let these six trusty fellows, Yes, let them all stand in a row, With bottles of whiskey and glasses, Drink deep to old Rossen LeBeau. (Chorus) ("He must have been a drinkin' man.")Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation
