Investigating the human impact of perceptually optimized motions for immersive telepresence robots

Abstract Telepresence is the ability to be in a remote location using technology. Robotic telepresence through a Virtual Reality (VR) Head-Mounted Display (HMD), here referred to as immersive robotic telepresence, increases the field of view for the person aboard the telepresence robot and thus improves the illusion of being present at the robot’s location. Immersive robotic telepresence is used for many applications, including remote education, remote exploration, search-and-rescue, clinical care, therapeutics, and assistive technology for aging and physical limitation. However, a significant barrier to the further use of this technology is VR sickness, a constellation of symptoms similar to motion sickness which can result from VR HMD use. Other aspects related to the motions of the telepresence robot, such as the forward speed and number of turns, can also have a positive or negative impact. To address these concerns, this article-based dissertation investigates user experience in immersive robotic telepresence. First, a mathematical framework for robot motion planning that accounts for user comfort criteria, called "Human Perception-Optimized Planning" (H-POP), is introduced. Robot paths created with H-POP were compared to a path created with a traditional path planning algorithm, the Rapidly exploring Random Tree (RRT). VR sickness and other aspects of the paths were examined to determine how these factors impacted the users. One of the optimized paths and the RRT path were then used to induce VR sickness in another set of participants while their brain activity was measured. Self-reported levels of VR sickness were found to be associated with a measure of cognitive function, the P3b, and the amount of errors on a secondary task, indicating that VR sickness induced in current generation HMDs had quantifiable impacts on cognition and performance. Changes in the P3b can be used to evaluate many types of VR experiences, and H-POP can be used for motion planning for any type of vehicle, so both provide value beyond the scope of this work. In sum, this dissertation provides three major contributions to the research and development community. First, it offers a framework for motion planning which accounts for user comfort criteria. Second, it discusses an evaluation of different features, such as the turns and distance from objects, that affect user experience. Finally, it provides evidence of the deleterious consequences of VR sickness on attention and performance. These results can inform developers of immersive telepresence so that VR sickness can be ameliorated and the comfort and enjoyment for users can be improved. H-POP:n avulla luotuja robottipolkuja verrattiin perinteisellä polkusuunnittelualgoritmilla, Rapidly exploring Random Tree (RRT) -algoritmilla luotuun polkuun. According to the information obtained from a georeferenced network of piezometers, it was determined the water table depth behavior in the Department of Lavalle and specially in the District of Costa de Araujo. The water table depths were grouped at intervals of 0.5 m, from surface to 2.5 m deep. The minimum and medium depths of each piezometer were calculated from 1983 to 2002 and also the medium depths corresponding to the months of March, June, September and December. The surface for different intervals were represented graphic and numerically by the use of Arc View software. With this information there were made tables of water table depths intervals and based on them, the phreatic risk was classified into low, medium and high assuming 1.5 m as the minimum admissible depth value for perennial crops practices. A discussion on water table salinity and its connection with vine chlorosis is presented. Results: 32 and 41% of the areas of the District Coast and Dpto. Lavalle, respectively, have the water table between 1.5 and 2.0 m deep, resulting Phreatic Low Risk for the District Coast and for the Middle Dpto. Lavalle; September is more critical with 43 and 40% of the areas of the District Coast and Dpto. Lavalle, respectively, with average groundwater levels between 1.0 and 1.5 m deep, resulting Risk Low water table for that month for the Dstrict Coast and High for the Dpto. Lavalle; the subarea Costa possesses the better conditions of phreatic and edaphic depth for the agriculture of the Department Lavalle; the main network of collectors is insufficient to produce the general depression of the phreatic levels of the Department of Lavalle.Fil: Ortíz Maldonado, Gonzalo. Carlo Lavalle, Martina Straito, Annalisa Caroli, Agostino Piro, Giuseppe Giunta, Marco Valerio Mariani, Francesco FedeleDepartment of Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Nephrological, Anesthesiological and Geriatric Sciences, “Sapienza” University of Rome, Policlinico Umberto I, Rome, ItalyAbstract: Currently, atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, with a prevalence of about 2–3% in the general population, representing a powerful risk factor for stroke and systemic thromboembolism and increased mortality and morbidity. Restoration of sinus rhythm is an important treatment option in AF and has a high success rate, but there is the need for an effective anticoagulation strategy to reduce the risk of embolic events. Anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists is often associated with failure to achieving effective international normalized ratio. In this setting, recent data have led to extended approval for rivaroxaban in clinical practice, because it is effective and safe in patients with AF undergoing cardioversion, avoiding additional health costs and related time loss, while improving patient satisfaction. The present report provides an overview of the main randomized controlled trial and the main real-life studies, documenting the use of rivaroxaban in patients with non-valvular AF who underwent the cardioversion procedure. Considering that novel non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in left atrial appendage thrombi resolution is still unknown in the real-world practice, the main findings on the use of rivaroxaban in this setting are also discussed. Keywords: atrial fibrillation, cardioversion, novel oral anticoagulants, rivaroxaban, thrombu

Learning combinatorial information from alignments of landmarks

This paper characterizes the information space of a robot moving in the plane with limited sensing. The robot has a landmark detector, which provides the cyclic order of the landmarks around the robot, and it also has a touch sensor, that indicates when the robot is in contact with the environment boundary. The robot cannot measure any precise distances or angles, and does not have an odometer or a compass. We propose to characterize the information space associated with such robot through the swap cell decomposition. We show how to construct such decomposition through its dual, called the swap graph, using two kinds of feedback motion commands based on the landmarks sensed. This paper characterizes the information space of a robot moving in the plane with limited sensing.
