Università e militarizzazione. Il duplice uso della libertà di ricerca
No full textIn Europa e in occidente la sfera civile e quella militare sono sempre più interconnesse. Questo processo coinvolge anche le Università, che sempre più offrono servizi al cosiddetto mondo della "difesa". In questo saggio Michele Lancione offre una guida per affrontare una semplice domanda: qual è il problema del rapporto tra Università e Militarizzazione, e come possiamo investigarlo ed eventualmente combatterlo?
A partire da una profonda conoscenza del sistema statunitense ed europeo e grazie alle sue esperienze nel Regno Unito, in Australia e in Italia, l’autore ci illustra diversi casi emblematici come il programma Human Terrain System statunitense, i nuovi strumenti di finanziamento alla ricerca militare italiani, e la collaborazione tra Frontex e il Politecnico di Torino. Ma racconta anche di pratiche di resistenza con le quali si cerca di combattere l’avvicinarsi tra l’Accademia e il Militare.
Questo è un primo spunto per una contro-cultura del rapporto tra Università e Militarizzazione, attraverso la quale soprattutto il corpo studentesco possa lottare per sottrarre la ricerca, lo studio e gli spazi dell’Università da industrie fondate su violenza, dolore e morte
City: Race, Class, and the Plan, in Bucharest, Romania
No full textThe paper explores the racialised geography of a series of socialist blocs located in the southern periphery of Bucharest, labelled as a contemporary Romanian “ghetto”. Through extensive ethnographic and archival work, it expands on contemporary Western race-aware urban scholarship, advancing an expansive reading of the “plan” as a key element to account for the endurance of foundational dispossession in the context of Bucharest. The goal is to trace how the social segmentations of “class” and “race” have been diagrammed through discontinuous city-making in the last hundred years, refuting a reading of these complex processes as a matter of evolutionary stages between economic regimes, which ends up reproducing a stereotypical representation of the Eastern “other”. The paper contributes to a situated approach to racial urbanism, offering the basis for a trans-Atlantic dialogue around the makings and unmakings of urban dispossession

No full textInspired by the compelling volume of Capello and Semi on Turin – Torino. Un profilo etnografico – this short intervention highlights three orientations to work toward a critical and radical form of urban ethnography. The first is an invitation at looking at the city as a vitalist mechanosphere, which requires paying attention at more-than-human agencies and urban affects, to better understand the assemblage of the urban political; the second has to do with an understanding of the margins not as site of relegation, but as site of resistance; and the third is a move to re-centre ethnographic writing as a quintessential form of urban politics
