“Robots Vs Animals”: Establishing a Culture of Public Engagement and Female Role Modeling in Engineering Higher Education
© 2017, © The Author(s) 2017. A widespread culture supporting public engagement activities in higher education is desirable but difficult to establish. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this science communication project aimed to enhance culture change in engineering by developing communication skillsets of early-career engineers, particularly supporting female engineers as role models. Engineers received training in storytelling to present at live events, enhanced by peer group social persuasion and vicarious modeling. A science communication coordinator and senior management endorsement removed barriers to participation. Evaluation showed engineers’ self-efficacy levels significantly increased. Qualitative data highlighted a developing culture of engagement but purposive selection of women proved controversial
The bosonic and fermionic propagators under an external electromagnetic field in a Euclidean manifold
In this paper, we will calculate the bosonic as well as fermionic propagators under classical homogeneous and constant magnetic and electric fields in a Euclidean space. For this, we will reassess the Ritus' method for calculating the Feynman propagator. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. CHARACTERISATION AND TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF PORTUGUESE WINE FARMS
This study aims to characterise the evolution of vineyard production, to measure the levels of technical efficiency, and to relate these with farmers and farms attributes. The sample used is composed of a panel of vineyard farms, for the period 2000-2005, belonging to Portuguese Alentejo region. The methodology used to estimate technical efficiency, was the stochastic production frontier. The results showed that there are room to improve the levels of technical efficiency in input use and that efficiency is variant with time. It was observed that technical efficiency increases with economic size and net farm income, as well as with family entrepreneurship.efficiency, parametric, vineyard, Crop Production/Industries, Farm Management,
Animation – Abstraction: The Birth of a New Art
Film abstrakcyjny – zauważa Giżycki – liczy sobie niemal tyle lat, ile samo malarstwo abstrakcyjne. W latach 1910-1912 Arnaldo Ginna i Bruno Corra (czyli bracia Corradini) prowadzili eksperymenty z „symfoniami” i „sonatami” barwnymi, czyli sekwencjami obrazów malowanych przezroczystymi farbami na czystej taśmie filmowej. Żadna z tych realizacji nie zachowała się do naszych czasów, ale dzięki szczegółowym opisom można je sobie wyobrazić i uznać za pierwsze przykłady filmu abstrakcyjnego. Giżycki przywołuje również innych twórców, którzy planowali zrealizowanie takich filmów (Pablo Picasso), a nawet przygotowywali wstępne rysunki i snuli rozważania teoretyczne (Léopold Survage). Giżycki notes that abstract film is almost as old as abstract painting. In the years 1910-1912 Arnaldo Ginna and Bruno Corra (brothers Corradini) were experimenting with colour “symphonies” and “sonatas”, or sequences of images painted with transparent paints directly on film. none of these reels survived, but thanks to detailed descriptions one can imagine them and consider them to the first abstract films. Giżycki also calls upon other artists who planned to make similar films (e.g. Pablo Picasso), and even prepared preparatory drawings and made some theoretical arguments (Leopold Survage). The author also argues that from the very beginning abstract film was conceptually tied with music. In the second part of the article the author presents the achievements of Viking Eggeling in the area of abstract film and the complicated story of his co-operation with Hans Richter. In the essay we also come to know about Walter Ruttmann who developed his version of abstract film independently from Eggeling and Richter. The author concludes his reflections with an argument that the struggle with this paint-film-abstract art form continues from the first experiments of Corradini brothers until now, and that today computers opened new and unexplored possibilities for artists

Hello in there wee one
It’s never too early to start getting to know your baby. The ‘Hello in there wee one’ book is going out to all parents-to-be across Dundee to encourage them to start bonding and thinking about their baby, before they arrive. This project was funded by the United Nations Children’s Rights Commission through CORRA. It brought together a collaboration of partners from NHS Tayside, Dundee City Council, Dundee Contemporary Arts and University of Dundee. We all wanted to support children’s voice from the very beginning by encouraging pre-birth communication where parents-to-be can get to know their bumps and start feeling connected to their baby.Families across Dundee worked with local artist Louise Kirby and art therapist Vicky Armstrong to create images and share their views on what would support them to talk to their bumps. We really appreciate all the families who worked with us from Dundee International Women’s Centre, Homestart Dundee, and Coldside family group. We also drew on the experience and advice of professionals across Midwifery, Health Visiting, Family Nurse Practitioners, Infant Mental Health, Speech and Language Therapists, and Social Work teams.Louise then developed illustrations from the families’ ideas, and we worked with children’s author and illustrator Natalie Russell to advise us on the visuals and develop the story. Gavin Reid, our graphic designer brought it together as a book.Books are going to every expectant parent in Dundee at their 16 week midwife appointment

Czech Agricultural Associations and the Impact of Membership on Farm Efficiency
The study investigates the efficiency effect of affiliation with the two strongest associations in Czech agriculture. These represent large-scale enterprises and individual farmers, respectively. The efficiency analysis is supplemented by analyses of incentives for associations' membership and farm characteristics decisive for membership choice. The results imply that political lobbying is the main entry incentive. Commercially-oriented individual farms which employ external workers are more likely to choose association membership, as are agricultural enterprises that specialize in livestock production or preserve a high share of employee ownership. We find that association membership has a significant positive impact on farms' performance, especially among individual farms. Non-members represent a more heterogeneous group. Nevertheless, the best non-members are able to achieve the production potential of association members.Associations, agricultural enterprises, Czech agriculture, incentives, individual farms, technical efficiency, stochastic frontier analysis, transition, Farm Management,
